Does no-one out there like Beauden or Arizona?

Hi there,

Well, our little one is due anytime now and we have got nowhere with sorting out names yet, despite everyone on mumsnet being great.

We have decided to probably stick with Beauden, which everyone slated us for before. I know about the Boden association but there are other baby threads which really like the name. Does anyone like Beauden or am I completely mad?

The other names we have talked about are:

Arizona
Sterling
Ronan
Winter (couldn't have this for a first name).

Really like Arizona as it is a special place to us (we live in UK).

Just needing some help - I did listen to everyone and told myself we couldn't use the name Beauden but me and dh still keep coming back to it. Please help...

OP, they are taking the piss (Seeker, I have my eye on you). Here are some guidelines

  1. Avoid calling your child after a US State. Especially New Jersey or New Hampshire. Really do avoid North Carolina as well
  1. Please avoid calling your child after currency. Sterling is not good. Euros is not good. Dollars is not good. Roubles is not good. In fact all currency names should be avoided
  1. Please avoid calling your child after seasons or weather related names. Please avoid Spring, Summer Autumn or Winter. Also avoid Wind, Typhoon or Tsunami, no matter how apposite those names might be.

In fact, a good rule for you would be to stick to Kings or Queens of England. But before you fall in love with Ethelred, the rule is that they have to have reigned after 1500.

It's not you, it's your child I'm thinking of

paisleyleaf · 30/09/2010 23:33

I think I remember she's already got an autumn

arizonagirl · 30/09/2010 23:38

Great memory paisleyleaf - we do indeed have an Autumn and I absolutely LOVE her name and she gets so many compliments. So if everyone hates the name Autumn on here, then perhaps Beauden is a winner after all.

Quattrocento - thank you for making me laugh out loud. But come on, what is so wrong with Summer. Shame about your post - I was thinking pound was quite nice. Or there again you suggested tsunami - hmmm, quite like that.

No, seriously...I am not a wind up. Sorry folks.

For some reason yours and your DHs Beauden threads stick in my mind.

Skyrg · 30/09/2010 23:41

Ok, if you have an Autumn you cannot call the next one Winter. What kind of name are you looking for, perhaps we can suggest others? Hippyish, nouns, places... currency? Grin

DinahRod · 30/09/2010 23:41

Ronan, Sterling or Beau but NOT Arizona or Beauden. Middle-name territory only at best.

seeker · 30/09/2010 23:41

Peso is nice for a boy.

And I won't hear a word said against Penny.

Or Bob.

iwantahouseinputney · 30/09/2010 23:42

I LOVE Arizona, but for a girl. I think it might be because of a TV programme though (Grey's Anatomy).

If I was American I would definitely consider it for my future DD's (sighs).

Quattrocento · 30/09/2010 23:44

Oh snd why would that be, paisleyleaf?

Actually I love the absurd babyname threads. My personal favourite was Cloud, although Bear ran it a close second.

I did suggest Shit-in-the-woods as a middle name following Bear but the OP didn't seem particularly keen

Quattrocento · 30/09/2010 23:49

ROFL at Seeker

How about Monsoon? Seriously - you'd get the weather connection as well as the clothes-shop thing

seeker · 01/10/2010 00:01

Quattrocento - you win. Hands down. I concede to a master.

arizonagirl · 01/10/2010 00:05

Quattrocento, you must be living in America - too sharp for this time of night. Actually, we did briefly discuss Monsoon but only very quickly. Now that shop I do know.

Skyrg, we are looking for a soft sounding nature name - two syllables. Can't start with 'f' or we would have liked Forest.

And Paisleyleaf - that's why I prefer unusual names to the usual, boring old names out there. People remember you - although I agree totally that you don't want to be remembered for being too ridiculous. Although I don't think our names are ridiculous - I love the ones we have chosen to date.

Thanks for your help everyone. Off to bed. Will mull over your suggestions - probably come back to Arizona or Beauden mind Grin

Arizona is too wierd for anybody! No to Boden. This kid is not going to thank you!

Skyrg · 01/10/2010 00:18

There are plenty of 'unusual' naturey names that are a bit more common.
River, for example.
Or:
Bracken
Phoenix
Briar
Asher
Jasper
Leon

arizonagirl · 01/10/2010 00:19

Not Boden - melikalikimaka (wow, don't think that name is going to win me over) Smile. It would be spelt Beauden - totally different, you see. Still like Arizona but as someone said earlier - it is a girl's name. Just googled it again - thanks for pointing that out.

arizonagirl · 01/10/2010 00:22

Skyrg, looove River (but not a goer). Love Phoenix but our surname starts with an 'F' - sounds a real mouthful. Asher - ok. Thanks for the suggestions. Really annoying - have always loved River but we have an Ocean already. And no, not kidding - I love her name!!!

I don't like Arizona or Beauden. I think Beauden looks a bit pretentious, like "pick a French word and then stick 'den' on the end." I think names ending with 'den' often sound too American. E.g. Jayden, Kayden, etc.

And Arizona doesn't seem like a good boy's name. Boy's names shouldn't end with an 'a', imo. As much as I'd like to preach feminist and all that, I don't want my DCs to suffer bullying because of my beliefs, so personally I would always stick to female or male names.

When I think Beauden, I think of a three-year-old boy with his ears pierced and teenage parents. Jeremy Kyle fodder. When I think of Arizona, I think of a Pocahontas-y tribe boy dressed a bit like Tarzan.

Not meaning to sound overly blunt. But you seem to take criticism well, and these are only opinions. And my DD hasn't got the most traditional name either, and there have been one or two raised eyebrows from the old women on the bus who ask what she's called. So I do think names are a personal thing. Personally, I would pick the name you say out loud and like the most, and sod what anyone else says.

Skyrg · 01/10/2010 00:29

Cyrus?
Dylan?
Does it have to be unusual?

arizonagirl · 01/10/2010 00:39

sweet post, babylann - thank you. Unfortunately, I will also now have Jeremy Kyle and Tarzan in my mind (not a good image). Think I see where you are coming from. On the other thread people thought Beauden conjured up a good-looking guy - oh well.

Skyrg, it doesn't have to be that unusual - just conjuring up a nice image - preferably to do with nature. Acually, you mention Cyrus. Don't like that very much but I did like Cypress (but know that won't work as it sounds too much like Cyprus).

OP posts:
skidoodly · 01/10/2010 00:41

PMSL @ Beauden :o

babylann · 01/10/2010 00:50

RE: Cypress, again I see 'ess' as a feminine ending. "Jess", "Princess", "Lioness" etc.

Maybe I'm a lot more old-fashioned than I thought! And I'm 22. Am I not supposed to be uber-cool and 'out there' right now? :(

WetAugust · 01/10/2010 00:58

Kronar?

Dinar?

Zloty?

Drachma?

Alaska?

Virginia?

Maine?

Vermont?

nooka · 01/10/2010 05:24

I quite like Sterling, it has a nice meaning "little star" and Stirling Moss was pretty cool.

Winter and Arizona I think are quite feminine sounding words (I have to admit I don't see them as names)

Ronan just makes me think boy band.

Beauden sounds made up, and although I see there are one or two out there, this thread comes up third on Google.

But then you've chosen names for your other two children that I think of as words and not names. If you think your son will be happy being named Beauden and if it's the name you love best, then you should probably go for it.

MadAboutQuavers · 01/10/2010 07:01

When I read this thread title, I didn't think "oh, that sounds like Boden only spelt differently"

I did think "mum must be a redneck/chav"

Sorry if that's too judgey, but Beauden is a truly awful name. Educationally subnormal definitely springs to mind. Confused

Arizona is only slightly better. If it means do much to you, are there any places in Arizona you could use instead?

MadAboutQuavers · 01/10/2010 07:03

*so much
