Whittled down girls list...views please

Due in two days time and seeking views on my final girls list:

Rosie, Rosella or Rosabelle?

Poppy?
Stella?
Isla (reserve name!)

Which name(s) suit a woman as much as a baby girl? Do any sound made up or are otherwise unsuitable for a lady?

Please post, I haven't got much energy left to think for myself!

i am not sure about isla. dont like rosabelle or roseall sounds a bit made up. love rosie, rosalind, poppy and stella.

Skyrg · 29/09/2010 20:27

I hope you don't mind me being honest!

Rosie is a nickname really, I think a 'real' name is definitely better for the birth certificate, she may appreciate when she's older. Not keen on Rosella, Rosabelle is very flowery, what if she's boyish? What about Rose, or Rosalyn? Rosemary?

Poppy I just can't see as an older woman, or even a teenager.

Stella reminds me of the beer and fashion models.

Isla I do like, but a lot of people seem to think it will date. I know one that's in her twenties.

readywithwellies · 29/09/2010 20:27

Like Isla, Poppy and Rosie. Rosella and Rosabelle sound like made up names and will be shortened to Rosie.
Stella ... Artois? Biscuit

runmeragged · 29/09/2010 20:27

Rosabelle sounds made up to me and a bit funny on a grown woman. I like Rosa on its own as the full name and it would be fine on a baby or an adult.

Rosie - bit babyish alone.

Rosella - sounds made up, don't like it.

Poppy - don't like, babyish.

Stella - just not a name I like, not sure why.

Isla - nice name, fine for any age.

MrToad · 29/09/2010 20:29

IMHO Stella and Isla are the only ones that would suit a grown up.

Wheelybug · 29/09/2010 20:29

Other than Stella - all names we've had on long and short lists.

We discounted Rosie and Poppy (and dd1 was definitely going to be this for a while) because we didn't feel they were grown up names.

Isla was very very almost dd2's name (dd1 got to choose between that and another) so I would be biased for this name. Stella is lovely too.

I don't like Rosella or Rosabelle. Rose (nn Rosie) has a more grown up feel to it.

Haliborange · 29/09/2010 20:31

Stella and Isla are the ones that will suit throughout her life.

If you're keen on Rosie, call her Rosamund, Rosemary or Rosalind so she has a longer name for adulthood or can instead be called rose or Rosa. Rosella reminds be of rubella and Rosabelle does sound made up (sorry).

Poppy is a good name for a baby or a cat. I can't see it on an adult, or at least not one who isn't an art teacher!

DuelingFanjo · 29/09/2010 20:31

I like Isla and Stella.

Superness · 29/09/2010 20:35

Thanks.

Skyrg - don't mind your honesty at all!

Runmeragged - when you write that Rosie is a bit babyish alone do you think I could/should add something to it like Rosie-May to make it less babyish or is the solution not using it at all?

OP posts:
Superness · 29/09/2010 20:39

Sorry should add, that our surname is a bit tricky and is only one syllable otherwise I think Rose would win the day and I wouldn't have to think of any other variations or names!

OP posts:
Skyrg · 29/09/2010 20:43

I know that question wasn't addressed to me but I'll answer anyway!

Rosie-May is very frilly and girly, and doesn't solve the 'grown up name' issue. She needs a name she can give at interviews etc, and imo hyphenated names don't improve a nicknamey name.

bigstripeytiger · 29/09/2010 20:49

I think Isla is the nicest of your choices, and would suit an adult as much as a child.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 29/09/2010 20:55

Rose is lovely, are you sure you cant use it? Rosa is beautiful, if Isla would work then why not Rosa? I like a lot of the Rosa- names, although they often verge on the frilly.

Of the options you gave in the OP I like Isla best.

Isla Rose?

Elsa?

Superness · 29/09/2010 21:03

Good Point FUD if Isla would work then Rosa would work too Smile.

Love the suggestion of Isla Rose although I have always thought that the middle name doesn't really matter as it is not used on an everyday basis.

I like Stella and Isla a lot. Isla is really rocketing up in popularity, though (which is why I think it's a name that people are guessing will date badly), so I would probably be inclined to go for Stella out of those two.

Poppy is OK.

I agree that your Ros... options all sound a bit little-girly. What about Rosalie, Rosamund, Rosalind or just Rosa? You could use Rosie as a nn for any of those quite easily.

But I think personally I'd just go for Stella. It's a lovely name, classic, easy to pronounce, easy to spell, not over-used at the moment, works for a girl or an adult, and should flow well with a one-syllable last name.

posey · 29/09/2010 21:06

I like Rosie and Isla (though v popular just now so you will probably have to put up with her beig known as Isla X [insert initial of surname] throughout her school life!

Rosella sounds like something medical (what's that rash type complaint?), Rosabelle not too sure.

Stella never very keen I'm afraid.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 29/09/2010 21:06

Cross-posted on the Rosa suggestion...

Faaamily · 29/09/2010 21:09

I love Stella.

I like Rose names, but Rosella and Rosabelle are way too fussy for me. Rosanna, Rosa or just Rose are far classier, imo.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 29/09/2010 21:15

Superness - You may not use middle names but you know they're there, it almost makes them more special. The shine doesn't get rubbed off.

TBH it prefer ROsa to Isla

Haliborange · 29/09/2010 21:17

Rosa is beautiful and a lot less ubiquitous around my way than Isla.

Lexx · 29/09/2010 21:36

Stella has the wife beater beer connotation (shame as it's a nice name), the others sound a bit too little girlish, I like Isla the best.

lecohen · 29/09/2010 21:40

I love Rosie May...hope you are feeling well

Superness · 29/09/2010 21:42

Thank you all very much. Pls keep posting, although I have to retire now to reserve some energy for the forthcoming event Wink

I love Stella - and find it quite slinky and sexy - maybe because of the meaning Star. Rosabelle sounds a bit contrived - but maybe Rosa Belle would be good?

muminthemiddle · 29/09/2010 22:10

I really like Stella.
