I would be grateful if you could help me and my DP choose a name. Which one do you prefer and why?

Martha, Florence reminds me of an old lady - sorry you did ask.

Minione · 24/09/2010 19:43

I'm the other way round - love Florence, hate Martha, there's something very frumpy about it.

No offence to any Msrthas or mummies of Marthas Smile

Greenwing · 24/09/2010 19:45

Love them both.
Martha has no well known diminutives. Florence will get called Flo and Flossie.

Are you a Conservative voter? - Florence is David Cameron's new baby daughter's name. Might get a surge of popularity now due to the publicity. Very pretty though and quite upmarket.
Biblical versus Name of an Italian city?
Good luck choosing but both are lovely. Smile

ShowOfHands · 24/09/2010 19:45

Martha is very pretty indeed.

Florence is okay. But the Camerons have just spawned one so that's put me right off. Put me right off my dinner too. But yes, the name is sullied a bit.

HotchpotchHoney · 24/09/2010 19:47

Florence is going to be very popular, no doubt by the time she goes to school, she would be one of many. Blame it on Florence and the machine and sam cam.

Hulababy · 24/09/2010 19:48

I love both and they are both in my top 3 names, with Matilda.

Hmm... possibly Florence is my fave at the moment.

usualsuspect · 24/09/2010 19:50

Not Flo ,tis awful

Stokey38 · 24/09/2010 19:51

I love Martha. Florence erally popular at the moment, I kmow 3.

Bue · 24/09/2010 20:17

Love them both. They're both getting terribly popular so it's horses for courses, really. If popularity doesn't bother you, you can't go wrong with either.

mathanxiety · 24/09/2010 20:41

Dislike both.

Astralabe · 24/09/2010 21:25

Martha is my school gets called Mattie which I really like...

Flossiebelle · 24/09/2010 22:01

Thanks for your opinions. I love both names but Florence more so. I am just a little unsure about flo or flossie as nn's. Do you think that people would always shorten this name?
Do you think Fleur could be used as a nn or is it a completely unrelated name Hmm?

NormanNorris · 24/09/2010 22:23

Martha for me.

JaynieB · 24/09/2010 22:26

I don't think Fleur would be an obvious diminutive of Florence. I like the full name but Flo is a bit horrid.
Martha is pretty.
If you like Fleur though, why not consider that?

twolittlemonkeys · 24/09/2010 22:31

Martha. I know 3 Florences who've been born in the past couple of months.

Surprise · 24/09/2010 22:34

Florence. It's pretty and not as popular as Martha. Also, more potential for nicknames, Flo, Floss, Flossie, Florrie etc.

latermater · 24/09/2010 22:35

Depends on your surname IMO. We discounted Martha because we had a "th" in our surname and it was too much of a mouthful. Personally I think Martha works better with single syllable surname and Florence can go with one or two-syllable surname.

Flossiebelle · 25/09/2010 12:50

I think today Martha is my preferred choice. After sleeping on it, I really am feeling a little put of by the nn's for Florence. No offence to any florences or parents of florences - it still remains a beautiful name Smile

Love Martha, my friends 6yo is a Martha & it suits her beautifully.

Why not opt for Fleur if you like that? Gorgeous name :)

ragged · 25/09/2010 14:18

Martha gets my vote -- is a strong family name for us, Florence is a little too popular for my liking. Usual nickname = Flory or Flo.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 25/09/2010 16:44

Martha

Florence seems to be very popular.

A1980 · 25/09/2010 19:33

Neither. They're both granny names and there alot of them.

As already said, if you like Fleur, go for that as her name. It's very pretty and not popular which is good.

sophieandbelly · 26/09/2010 15:34

Scarabeetle · 26/09/2010 15:41
