Girl's name that works in French..?

My husband is half-French, so we need a girl's name that works in both English and French, or at least can be said nicely with a French accent, IYSWIM Confused...

We already have an Anna Therese and a Sophie Marie. I like Marianne, but is that too similar to the names we already have?

I also like Noemie (vetoed by DH), Vivienne, Beatrice, Elisabeth (DH doesn't like), Helene (pronounced without the 'H', and I can't make my computer do the accents). DH likes Amelie (which is nice), but my niece is Emily...

Please help!

It is tricky cos what is nice in English can be seen as very stuff and old-fashioned in French.

Lots of good ideas above, but if you're going to be frequently in France I'd avoid Alice unless you want the French singing at her (a phone company is called Alice and has a very catchy and annoying jingle).

Some more ideas (I'll try not to repeat others above)
Lise/Lisa
Alexandra
Julie
Clemence
Rosine
Ella
Beatrice
Aimee
Melanie
Celine
Celia
Sophie

Just noticed the suggestions for Aurelie...this sounds so pretty in French but I'm sure English speakers will say 'orally' so I took that one of my list! Similar to you I have a French DH

My daughter is called Alice and I'm more worried about the hordes of Eddy mitchell fans than phone users ...

We're also looking for a good Anglo-French crossover name for a baby girl (British family living in France).

Could I ask what native French speakers think of Madeleine (i know it has been mentioned on this thread a couple of times)? We've had very negative reactions from some French friends, who say that it is old fashioned (and not in a good way).

Main alternative is Eleanor. Do you think that she would spend her life correcting people who would think it was Eleonore? Is the spelling too English?

mamaloco · 27/09/2010 11:16

laugh I agree with both your statements I am afraid. But may be Madelaine is due a revival? But then there is Proust and the cake... says the one whom both DDs have a cake name! Blush, I get teased by my french familly but I just ignore them, everybody else thinks they are lovely.

I like Eleanor, what about spelling it Alienor? (with accent on the e) like "Alienor of Aquitaine" (old french/english name), it won't be mistaken for Eleonore that way.

laughorcry · 27/09/2010 15:22

Thanks mamaloco, although we're a bit stumped for a name if neither of these are any good. Wonder how we could find out if Madeleine is on the way back?

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 27/09/2010 15:28

I have Isabelle, Florence and Madeleine. MIL is French and DH and I are both bilingual.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 27/09/2010 15:33

I don't know why I said that. Blush Squillions of people will now know who I am. Gah.

those are some of the names that I like that appera on my french student firends face book - she is now 20 to give you soemo idea of the era of the nmaes given

nulgirl · 27/09/2010 15:45

My dh is french and our dd is called emma as we wanted something simple and timeless which worked in both languages. The french say it differently to us though more like "ayma" which I prefer. If my ds had been a girl we were torn between Charlotte and Arianne

They also say on another site that grandparents and greatgrandparents names are coming back.

French/english familly here too.

frakkinnakkered · 28/09/2010 08:01

I've not come across a small Madeleine here, in fact I don't think I know a French Madeleine.

Last little girls born that I know were Zoe, Agnes, Francine and Clemence. Last bilingual little girl was Ariel.

Some mid-20s French names on my FB are Anne, Morgane, Emilie, Adeline, Elodie, Sylvie, Laure, Maud and Virginie.

Plus a 10 year old Camille and a 13 year Marion!

Re: Eleanor they will constantly try to put the e on the end - try Elinor (ye olde Englishe spelling) or Alienor.
