So far this is all I have managed to come up with and wondered how the names sounded to you girls?

Any suggestion very welcome!!

We are looking for something pretty, fairly 'solid' and not too common...

Thanks in advance!

I would spell it Harriet and I like it - Hatty for short?

Roselyn is pretty but not too frilly.

LadyMetroland · 21/09/2010 21:21

Roselyn is a lovely and not very common - although I suppose she'd probably become a Rosie in due course

Harriette is also nice although I'd also spell it just Harriet (otherwise your dd will be forever correcting people)

Do you want more suggestions?

MummyGeorgie · 21/09/2010 21:23

Thank you ladies!

Yes I'd love some suggestions.... I'm finding choosing names really difficult!!

Harriet is lovely (I have one!) but yes please, spell it properly, it ruins a lovely name otherwise :)

Roselyn is very pretty but likely to be mixed up with Rosalind maybe.

fairyteapot · 21/09/2010 21:26

Flora

I think this is lovely, and not v common. Rose/Rosie quite popular now.

Faaamily · 21/09/2010 21:27

I like Harriet, but not with the 'ette' ending.

I have to behonest, I think Roselyn is one of the least pretty Rose names. I prefer Rosa or Rosanna.

BelligerentGhoul · 21/09/2010 21:28

I like Harriet. Harriette feels too much - why gild it?

piscesmoon · 21/09/2010 21:41

Harriet is nice, but not with the added letters.

pointydog · 21/09/2010 21:48

Harriet

niccibabe · 21/09/2010 22:46

Sorry for this...but DH who can ruin a name for anyone says..."Harriet the Chariot" - I always think it's better to know in advance rather than find out in the playground.

Roselyn lovely

LoisCommonDenominator · 21/09/2010 23:03

Roselyn - is it pronounced just like Rose + Lynne, or is it Roz? 'Rose + Lynne' is very pretty.

Harriet(te) doesn't do it for me, I find it quite plain, but it's a perfectly good name. I don't think the chariot rhyme is anything to worry about, unless I'm missing something about chariots!

I think that Harriet and Rosaline/Rosalyn or Rosalind sound OK (not names I'd choose personally, but perfectly fine) but your spellings are really quite odd. I'm not of the view that spelling names in a different way make them more interesting, I think it just makes life a little bit more difficult for the bearer.

There are a lot of variants on Rose - I quite like Rosanna(h) - I prefer the Roz sound.

poppyknot · 22/09/2010 10:06

Better than the chariot rhyme............

All the cowhands wanna marry Harriet,
Harriet's handy with a lariat,
But she don't want to marry yet,
She's havin' too much fun!

(A lariat's a lassoo!)

I was told this when a teenager and really liked it.

And anyway whose name doesn't have a rhyme???

coraltoes · 22/09/2010 10:07

The spelling Harriette is one of the standard variations of Harriet which in itself is an anglicised version of Henriette (french). Just because it isn't the spelling you use doesn't make it wrong. I like both names OP...i wonder if the ette ending makes a more open vowel sound though. Harry-ette rather than Harry-ut. Does that make sense?

pigindisguise · 22/09/2010 11:13

I like Roselyn but not Harriette/Harriet and especially Hatty

Fimbo · 22/09/2010 11:34

I prefer Roslyn.

How about Hilary?

babysoon1 · 22/09/2010 12:39

Harriet and Rosa/Rose or Harriet and Rosie would be better, both nice. Hatty also lovely nn.

girlafraid · 22/09/2010 12:41

Harriet is brilliant, Harriette is pretentious

MrsJohnDeere · 22/09/2010 12:47

Harriet is lovely. Not keen on your alt. spelling.

expectingno3 · 22/09/2010 13:46

Eliza Rose
Lotta Grace
Belinda May
Delphine (a particular favourite as its my daughters name!)

Do like Harriet too though. x

hatsybatsy · 22/09/2010 14:35

also have a harriet - prefer that spelling really. no point giving a child a name they will constantly have to tell people how to spell? (and i speak from experience.....)

roselyn - quite pretty and unusual. also like rose/rosa.

other names thatw ere on our short list were alice and sophie/sophia - any good?

MummyGeorgie · 22/09/2010 18:32

Thanks for all your feedback. I really appreciate it.

It's given me a few more names to pass by dh too :)

Apologies for the spelling..... It didn't register that it was the French rather than English version.
Thanks again!

If you go for Harriette, she will be forever spelling it out on the phone. Harriet sounds exactly the same but without her having to spend her life going "that's Harriet with an extra T E". A good traditional name, not one I would pick but perfectly nice and each to their own.

Not sure about Roslyn. I like Evelyn and I like Rosanna though.

ValiumSingleton · 22/09/2010 20:21

eeeoooo to the spelling Harriette. Not a fan of the name, but it's particularly bad with all the extra letters. It reminds me of Serviette the way you are spelling it.
