Kit on its own for a boy because I hate Christopher?

Hello

I love the name Kit for a boy but am struggling with the fact that it's not a 'proper' name.. I keep reading that you should give chidlren 'proper' names, not a nickname!

Kit is usually short for Christopher or Christian - both of which do nothing for me at all...In fact I hate them both!

Can I get away with it?

Full name would be Kit William Duncan and no, can't use either William or Duncan as first name...

Help.

I am all for just using the name you like and not having to have the "proper" name. Sounds good to me Smile

Thanks - love your screen name - a girl after my own heart!

DH is Kit, just Kit with no 'proper' first name and has never had any problems with it. People do occasionally ask if it really isn't short for anything but that's all.
Kit William Duncan sounds lovely to me :)

I really like it - it would be on my shortlist, but it is too similar to my name.
I love Jem, but am in a similar position in that I don't really like any of the long forms (although Jeremiah is growing on me).
Go for it!

Yes yes yes, i love that name, i don't think i could use it, without being a bit creepy (back story i love love love the name Evie, have done for years, a little girl i looked after only sweetened the name for me, but can you guess what her brother is called). Any who yes do use it is such a nice name.

Novusleaf · 19/09/2010 16:05

dh's grandfather was Kit short for Kitchener... as in Lord.
But I see no reason to have it as Kit only. It's a modern thing to have only the full name... if you look at 1901 (or thereabouts) top names you'll see Betty and Annie in there.

I don't like it when a name shortens to one with a different initial (like Christopher to Kit, or Elizabeth to Liz), which seems like another reason to have Kit only.

Yeah, i know a kit who's 13 and is just Kit. Although DH is Chris and I love his name - but I know it's not to everyone's cup of tea!

Piroska · 19/09/2010 17:27

Kit is my first choice boy's name.

Like you, I just don't favour Christopher/Christian.

I did wonder about making it short for a Cassius-type name, but actually just love Kit.

I think I'm having a girl but otherwise would've ordered personalised baby blankets for 'Kit' by now I've been so set on it for so long!

Whatever you decide, I'm sure it'll be great!

Piroska · 19/09/2010 17:31

I do think it has it's own integrity.

callista · 19/09/2010 17:40

Absolutely love Kit, especially as part of the name you've suggested. I don't think it necessarily needs to be short for a longer name, though I do like the idea of kids having the option of various forms of the name.

Also love Kit for a girl after watching the otherwise-dreadful 'Failure to Launch'.

meadowlarks · 19/09/2010 18:21

My cousin is Kit, nothing else. I think it's really nice. Go for it!

RunLyraRun · 19/09/2010 18:27

Never thought of Kit before, but I think it is very cool indeed, really like it :)

Takver · 19/09/2010 19:55

Definitely good as a stand alone name.

(And I like your full collection of names too - reminds me of Kit Hesketh Harvey, who has, IMVHO, one of the coolest names on the planet.)

Quackmonster · 19/09/2010 20:00

Thought Kit was short for Alexander, don't ask me why?

crikeybadger · 19/09/2010 20:00

Our DS is Kit and we love it - it's unusual without being too 'weird'.

We didn't even know it could be short for something when we chose it.

lazycow007 · 19/09/2010 20:03

Yes love Kit too - go for it Smile

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 19/09/2010 20:06

It's a brilliant name in it's own right, I suggested it to my DH just this afternoon. Go for it.

OrmRenewed · 19/09/2010 20:06

Lovely name!

AngryPixie · 19/09/2010 20:08

Another fan here, it's cool and works for all ages.

SirBoobAlot · 19/09/2010 20:39

Going to go against everyone else here and say no, I don't think you should.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 19/09/2010 21:58

I know a little boy called Kit. I love it, and Kitty for a girl.

PhillipeVonRumple · 19/09/2010 22:03

I don't really like shortened names without giving the long name to fall back on (think The Right Hon. Christopher Amarilis)

HOWEVER

I bloody love the name Kit so I'm going to say, yes you can.
