Hi,

First ever post...! Eeek

we are really suck with wee boys names...! Already pick a girls name.

Being Scottish I would like to have something maybe based from my homeland, however hubby is English and thinks having a name a 'strong' Scottish name wouldn't really work with our very English surname. I see his point and am very open to other suggestions.

I'd like something that isn't too 'overused' but isn't too naff or flowery!

We can't use Lewis, Angus and Rory as my Brother and Sister have already used them!

Current runners:
Hugh - Brother's name can I use it too?
Jamie
Hamish
Ben
Tom - over used?
Charles or Charlie
Lachlan? Sadly don't think that will work. But love it.

I know we can always use a 'Scottish' name as a middle name.

So do your worse and tell me what you think!

Thanks. x

what about Fergus instead of Angus? I love3 the scottish names and find names like Jamie, Ben and TOm perfectly good names but hard to comment on. I can't really say more than, oh, that's a perfectly good name.

I love Lorcan, which is the Irish version (or one of the Irish versions of Lawrence) imo it's easier to say than Lachlan.

What about Gregor, Donald or Bruce? Donald and Bruce are either old men or cool toddlers. Don has a bit of Ben about it, but there are fewer. (Donald is Scottish isn't it?! Confused )

Maybe these names sound totally blah and normal in Scotland but they sound good to me.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 17/09/2010 13:49

I love Hamish

And I reckon you could use Hugh - my BIL gave his son my DH (his brother)'s name - and that means they have same first and surname. Would your brother be chuffed?

I agree with ValiumSingleton - Jamie, Ben and Tom are all perfectly fine names - just not much to say about them.

BlueChampagne · 17/09/2010 13:55

How about some Scottish kings with mainstream names: Malcolm, Duncan, Alexander/Alasdair, Kenneth, David.

Otherwise:
Ross, Glenn, Seamus (might be a bit too much for your hubby)

Good luck!

diddl · 17/09/2010 14:03

I absolutely love the name Hamish & would have used it if husband had also liked itSad

CommanderCool · 17/09/2010 14:05

Ewan?
Ross?
Andrew?
Alexander?
Alastair?
Fionn?
Sorley?

CommanderCool · 17/09/2010 14:06

Kyle?

rainbowrosie · 17/09/2010 14:08

Harris
Lewis
Jura

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 17/09/2010 14:24

This is brilliant, Thank you.

I agree, Ben, Tom and Jamie are great but just a bit...well hummmm okay. Nothing standout about them.

BlueChampagne: Like your thinking, Scottish Kings is a brilliant idea. Will pull out my school ruler and have a look. Haha

ValiumSingleton: I know a few Fergus and this is very cute for a wee boy.

Love Malcolm but Hubby doesn't like Malcolm as our surname starts with a 'M'. But I think it's got quite a good ring to it.

Love Alasdair, Bruce and Lawrence. Hubby suggested Lawrence but he's worried it will become Larry??

xx

Duncan
Struan
Gordon
Magnus
Kester

I think these days Lawrence is shortened to Laurie, which is lovely.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 17/09/2010 14:34

Quite like Hector, but maybe it's a bit 'done' now.
Magnus?
Ramsay?
Struan?

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 17/09/2010 14:36

Passed boyfriends: Duncan and Gordon. Very annoying as Duncan would of be great.

Love Magnus, but i know Hubby will hate it.

Clyde?

ILoveGregoryHouse · 17/09/2010 17:10

My boys have scottish names, I am scottish, DH english with very trad english surname.

I like:

James/Jamie, Laurence, Andrew, Logan, Finley/Finlay/Findlay, Hamish (which is James anyway).

And Struan is nice.

What girls name have you chosen?

mathanxiety · 17/09/2010 17:25

Arran
Kelvin
Cameron
Alec? (don't know if this is Scottish but prefer it to Alex)

CommanderCool · 17/09/2010 17:28

Hugh
Craig
Stuart
Callum

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 17/09/2010 18:40

Clyde...! Oh no I can just see my Father's face, he was born in Glasgow. Can't name the baby after the River Clyde, I'd never live it down.

ILoveGregoryHouse -
I really like the Finley/Finlay/Findlay idea, but a friend has just a "Fin" but they live miles away and we only see them about once a year. Could we use it?? Apart from Logan I really like the list.

Oh it's a tough one, if DH will let me have Hamish we might have a winner.

What about Alistair/Alisdair?
And Alec is nice...

taegsmum · 19/09/2010 16:22

How about Seoras (pron Shoris) Gaelic version George...I know a lovely young lad with the name, he lives in the Highlands - his dad's name is George, so they named him that!

LowLevelWhiinging · 19/09/2010 16:29

Fraser is very cool.

I like Douglas too but it's not to everyone's taste.

Elsa123 · 19/09/2010 17:58

I like Ewan/Euan.

Also Dougal, Duncan and Robert.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 19/09/2010 20:20

God it's really tough, DH wants to wait until we meet the baby, however i'd like to have a short lift (just in case)

Not Scottish at all but quite like:
Kit
Lawrence

My father has just gottan wind of our first choice girls name and freaked. As he hates it, which i find funny since it's my middle name...! Silly old sod.

Now really keen on picking something for a boy that he won't like just to piss him off such as Orlando or Oscar. Which I do quite like x

Findlay (Finn a bit too popular here now though)
Iain (got to have the second i)
Harris

fluffles · 19/09/2010 20:24

p.s. am scottish and live in edinburgh

pooka · 19/09/2010 20:25

I love KIt AND Lawrence.

A friend has a Lawrence and he is Lawrie.

DS2 was nearly Kit. A very close second-runner to his actual name.

Aitch · 19/09/2010 20:26

love laurence, esp with laurie as shortened option.
