Hi,

First ever post...! Eeek

we are really suck with wee boys names...! Already pick a girls name.

Being Scottish I would like to have something maybe based from my homeland, however hubby is English and thinks having a name a 'strong' Scottish name wouldn't really work with our very English surname. I see his point and am very open to other suggestions.

I'd like something that isn't too 'overused' but isn't too naff or flowery!

We can't use Lewis, Angus and Rory as my Brother and Sister have already used them!

Current runners:
Hugh - Brother's name can I use it too?
Jamie
Hamish
Ben
Tom - over used?
Charles or Charlie
Lachlan? Sadly don't think that will work. But love it.

I know we can always use a 'Scottish' name as a middle name.

So do your worse and tell me what you think!

Thanks. x

Hamish is a gorgeous name.

I like Alexander too but is getting rather popular.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 19/09/2010 20:37

Hamish is my very favourite Scottish boys name
second favourite would be Duncan (Which sounds slightly less Scottish if this is a problem for your DH)

stleger · 19/09/2010 20:45

I think Sorley as mentioned above is a great name - but would it be too 'way out'?

Aitch · 19/09/2010 21:05

torin is a lovely name also.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 19/09/2010 22:32

fluffles:
I'm jealous..hoping to return to Edinburgh when our children are young, slowly working on DH. My other brother is Ewan. And yes, Iain must have that 2 'i'.

Think Kit, Lawrence and Alasdair are moving up the list.

Can Torin be used for a girl???

prettybird · 19/09/2010 22:40

Like Alexander and Matthew - but then I would, seeing as we chose them for ds Grin

Other suggestions that haven't previously been mentioned are:

Cameron
Callum
Domnhall

Aitch · 19/09/2010 22:55

don't think so. but muirrean nice for a girl.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 20/09/2010 10:50

Prettybird: I quite like Cameron however DH won't.

Going to keep working on DH i'll break him at some point...! :-)

I love Hugh and Hamish from your list. Lovely, underused names.

Ben, Tom and Charlie, on the other hand, are very common and a little dull imo.

Saltire · 20/09/2010 11:20

Hamish is fab.

How about
Ewan/Euan
Logan - my friends brother is called this
Alistair
Callum
Donald
Duncan

I also know a scots woman married to an englishman and her 2 sons are Lewis and Harris!

Aitch · 20/09/2010 11:31

lol they''ll need to have another boy and call him Barry...

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 20/09/2010 14:56

Or a girl called Iona!!!!

OP posts:
prettybird · 20/09/2010 15:00

The only problem with Hugh is that in Scotland he could end being called Shuggy which I hate.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 20/09/2010 15:19

Prettybird: I agree, my brother is Hugh it was a teacher at school who called him Shug. My mother wasn't happy at all...!

It is tough, isn't it. I think you're right in trying to have a short list, rather than start from scratch when baby's born.

Can I also throw Aidan into the mix? I know it's Irish really, but he was an Iona monk.

Aitch · 20/09/2010 16:18

torin, listen, i am telling ya. lovely name. or laurence.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 20/09/2010 20:29

Everyone keeps saying aren't girls names hard...! Found the girls name really easy.

Torin sounds dreadful with our surname..!
