Are there many newborn Emilys at the minute or is it slightly older ones? Round here I don't know any babies, but according to the last stats (2008??) it is really really popular, so a little confused! How about where you are?

I know 2 of about 5 years old, one spelt Emilee. I don't know any babies.

BuntyPenfold · 17/09/2010 10:27

Sorry, that wasn't a help; in the deep SW on the moors.

muggglewump · 17/09/2010 10:29

Very, as are Amelia, Amelie, Emilia, Millie, so they all sound similar.
Am near Glasgow.

sedgiebaby · 17/09/2010 10:33

Yes, in the south west

suwoo · 17/09/2010 10:40

I know three here in North Manchester. One is 6 weeks old and spelt Emilie.

BunnyLebowski · 17/09/2010 10:43

10 a penny round here (W Yorks).

Very overused and imo boring name.

BuntyPenfold · 17/09/2010 10:44

If you are including Millie, Amelia etc, then I know lots.

thedollshouse · 17/09/2010 10:55

I'm in Herfordshire and its not so popular here amongst babies. Most Emilys I know are over 8. I really like it.

chaya5738 · 17/09/2010 10:59

Lovely name. I also see it on the top ten lists but have yet to meet any baby Emilys. I have lots of friends with that name though (I am 32)

seeker · 17/09/2010 11:03

Remember that even the most "popular" names aren't actually that common!

There are several Emilys in my 14 year old dd's circle, and 2 in my ds's year 5 group of 60 - but it'a a lovely name - if you like it it doesn't matter if there happens to be another one in her year at school

EffieB · 17/09/2010 11:03

Ooo, is the reason Emily's so high that it also includes Millie, Amelia etc...? How would I find that out? That could explain it then as I know quite a few of those but no Emily's- the only Emily's being grown women and girls over 5 at least.

Bunny we're in Yorkshire also, where are you? Maybe your area is much classier than ours!

No, the stats don't lump names together. Even the different spellings of Emily (Emilie etc.) are counted separately.

I think people are saying that the whole 'family' of names is everywhere at the moment, so even if there weren't many Emilys in your town it would still blend in with all the similar names.

TessOfTheBurbs · 17/09/2010 11:21

(Unless, of course, a little girl is registered as Emily but known to everyone as Millie - undercover Emilys like that might mask its popularity. That said, all the Emilys I know are Emily or Em, and all the Millies are just full-name Millies)

granhands · 17/09/2010 11:24

My DD is called Emily, she is seven months.I live in East Anglia

TwistAndShout · 17/09/2010 11:25

There are three in DS1 class (5 year old).

None in DS2 class (3 year old)

Haven't come across any baby ones lately in toddler groups with 1 year old DS3

Lots of baby Amelies and Millies around at the moment though.

muggglewump · 17/09/2010 11:26

Yes, that's what I meant.
It's a nice name, it just depends on whether you mind there being lots of other children with the same or very similar sounding name.

Pernickety · 17/09/2010 11:27

East Anglia but I only know of one 7 year old Emily.

CharlieBoo · 17/09/2010 12:01

Most are older here in MK, 5+, I know one 3 year old and my 15 year old niece, its a beautiful name and no Emily I know has ever been shortened to Millie.

EffieB · 17/09/2010 12:18

seeker I know what you mean but round here if someone shouts 'ella/evie/edie/issy...' then most of the toddler group/ playgym turns their heads- I swear between about eight names it is well over the majority if toddlers and babies I know...

I know of one who is about 8. I'd say its popularity peaked about 8 years ago. I'd say an Emily named now has a chance of being the only one in her class iyswim. Although I'm not checking the stats as I type this. It's just a gut feeling that I haven't heard of any babies being called Emily for a good few years.

LiquoriceLila · 17/09/2010 19:52

Quite a few here in the north west. my 8 month old cousin is an Emily so its still being used.

mathanxiety · 17/09/2010 20:52

DS's class in school had 5 Emilys and 1 Emilie -- that would have been about when he was 7, in the US. Then there were a good few Emmas in younger classes, and then Amelias and Emilias started creeping in. I think like ValiumSingleton that the Emily train has left the station.

flopsy1974 · 17/09/2010 21:50

Not as popular as it was a few years ago. I don't know any baby Emiliy's. All Lily's and Olivia's round here (South Yorks).

MrsC2010 · 18/09/2010 16:59

One baby Emily here. As a secondary school teacher I haven't met many recently. (East Dorset.)

Rockbird · 18/09/2010 17:02

Here in Surrey I know about 77 little Emilys, half of whom will be in DD's class when she starts school in two years.
