Finally!!!!!! decided on some names (due errr, now).

girl -
Sofia mae
Amelia mae

boy -
Samual Lachlan (dh hates Lachlan but I am going to fight my face off for it).

Think Sofia is my fav. I may shorten it to Fia every now and again because we are big on nicknames and bloody I hate ''Sof/Soph'' with a passion.

Is Fia acceptable? oui/non?

Sorry but I think that Fia sounds like your DD is named Thea and you have a speech impediment. If you hate Sof/Soph then don't call your DD Sofia. Once she gets to school everyone will call her that anyway.

BuntyPenfold · 16/09/2010 11:09

They will say Sofe at school, really they will.

getstuffed · 16/09/2010 13:27

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Sad

What about Fionnula. That can be shortened to Fia.

Marjee · 17/09/2010 22:29

I know someone called Fia, not short for anything its just Fia, lovely name!

Skyrg · 17/09/2010 22:50

I knew a Sophia at school and she was never anything else. We never shortened it. My name is rarely shortened either.. It depends on the person. If the child doesn't like a nickname, they'd probably tell their friends not to use it.

Sofia is a lovely name.

Firawla · 17/09/2010 23:13

I think Fia is fine, the names are nice. Only thing I would spell boys name Samuel unless you have a reason not to because people will get it wrong with your spelling?

ValiumSingleton · 18/09/2010 13:15

Fia is dangerously close to the Spanish for ugly.... but I guess that's not really an issue.

I prefer Sophia

LisMcA · 18/09/2010 14:34

I know a fia who is really a Sophia. Lovely name go for it.

Peopleshorten my name all the time but I just say only "special people" get to call me that. And eveyone usually goes back to my proper name!

QOD · 18/09/2010 14:41

I know a Fia who is a Fia - cute name, it's Italian (as is she)

onimolap · 18/09/2010 14:47

Would you pronouce it "fear" (which has its drawbacks) or "f-eye-a"?

QOD · 19/09/2010 09:38

Fee ah is how my pal says it

DaisyDaresYOU · 19/09/2010 10:54

My samuel is also known as samual Hmm thats how es dad spelt it on forms

SirBoobAlot · 19/09/2010 11:14

Don't do it if you don't like Soph as a nn.

msyikes · 19/09/2010 19:18

Feel the fia and do it anyway

FiveGoMadInDorset · 19/09/2010 19:20

They won't call he Sophe, my name is Sophie and I am 40 and have never need called Sophe in my life.

Bunbaker · 19/09/2010 19:30

Fia sounds too similar to fear and I'm not keen on Mae as a middle name. It crops up regularly.

I like Sophia/Sofia or Sophie. Fiona is nice and Fionula

Samual is usually spelt Samuel so you may end up with his teacher thinking his parents can't spell.

Ineedsomesleep
I laughed at your post. BIL cannot pronounce "th" and calls his daughter roof.

lazycow007 · 19/09/2010 19:46

My first thought was the same as INEEDSOMESLEEP's and then i scrolled down, lol. Mae as a hyphen is too popular these days too (as is Mai, May) and Amelia is also very popular - you will end up with at least one other in her class and she will live her school life as Amelia "first letter of your surname", or worse "short Amelia", "Tall Amelia" or whatever, same goes for Sophia. We have a "big Adam" and "little Adam" and Charlie A and Charlie D in DD class and believe me it has stuck through 3 yrs of school already.

All the names you have chosen are nice though so go with gut feeling Smile

Skyrg · 19/09/2010 23:17

I just realised something (don't know if you've named her yet!)

Fia Mae = Fear Me
Say it out loud, it does sound like it. Just saying, kids might pick up on it.

sophieandbelly · 20/09/2010 08:00

i wasnt called soph at school, and rarely am now if someone does i just say i dont like it and they dont say it again! simple p.s couple of friends used to call me fie which i didnt mind!

DaisyDaresYOU · 20/09/2010 22:51

Bunbaker :o thats exactly what happened with me.The teacher had to ask me if es name is spelt with an e or an a as some forms were written with an a Blush

nappyaddict · 21/09/2010 02:10

Soph--eee-ah seems very popular but

Soph-eye-ah I rarely here. Not sure if there is a spelling difference for the different pronunciations?

purlcity · 21/09/2010 21:40

We have a DD, nearly 4 years old, called Sofia and we call her Fia all the time.

She refers to herself as Fia too.

I think it is lovely (but then I would!)even though it sounds like Fear.

No one ever calls her Sof though.

Our baby DD is called Teodora (Tay-oh-dora) but Sofia struggles to pronounce it and calls her Terror-dora or just Terror.

So our daughters are now known as Fear and Terror!

I always thought people would call her Dora but no one does. You can't always predict nicknames.

nooka · 22/09/2010 05:10

I also have a name with an obvious nickname that I have never used (and have made sure no one else does either). But it is a bit risky to chose a name with a common shortening which you really dislike, because it is quite possible that your dd may actually like it. My big sister was always called by a "family approved" nn until she left home and decided to use a different shortening and told my parents she really didn't want to use the family nn anymore, she is now the other shortening, which I suspect my parents dislike but have no option about.

I think Fia is OK - my ds is often known as Fee (his name has an "f" in it) but not I have to say by his friends who use a much more standard shortening.

Sorry, but what's with the 'Mae' bit - sounds like something from Gone with the Wind, and not in a good way. May is spelt M-a-y
