Girl's name pretty much decided - Isobel Ann.

Boy's name subject of hot debate.

I want something Scottish (would like something Gaelic really, I'm liking Ruaraidh just now) but DP's an Englishman and vetos anything his family won't be instantly able to spell.

So, so far we've got

Duncan
Sam (DS's choice, but he's 3 and Sam's a bear in a book he's got, so we can safely discount this I think)
James (DP likes but I think it's too common)
Euan (I love but DP says it's too common Hmm)
Calum (DP doesn't like)

Can anyone come up with anything else which I can run by him?

Duncan's a great name. And I don't think there are that many Jameses around these days.

Iain?
Alistair/Alisdair?

CharlieBoo · 12/09/2010 11:18

Joshua
Jack
Noah
Oliver

What's your ds called? You can't go wrong with James or Sam (Samuel) in my opinion.

SecretNutellaFix · 12/09/2010 11:18

rather than be original-does this help at all?

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 11:21

DP won't even consider Iain. It would have to be Ian. I'm too pigheaded to compromise Grin

Like Alistair ... DP doeasn't, something about satanists.

It's a miracle we already have one child and managed to name him and everything. That was only because it was a family name of DP's and it's a good strong simple name which I couldn't argue with. This time it's MY TURN Grin

Been through that list Nutella and DP starts twitching about 3 names in.

He's just finished ranting about how ridiculous the name Mackay is because it's pronounced mac -eye and all of us Scots are nutters Hmm

ZacharyQuack · 12/09/2010 11:32

Struan

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 11:34

Love Struan, DP makes faces.

I think it'll have to be Duncan. I just keep thinking there must be more names which are Scottish but also acceptable to a heathen sassenach Englishman such as DP ...

Lachlan - but only if your last name is Scottish.

Rory

Aidan

Andrew

Hassled · 12/09/2010 11:39

Tell your DP you're going for Thane of Cawdor and that's it. He can roll his eyes as much as he likes - he's not about to give birth, is he?

onimolap · 12/09/2010 11:39

Fergus, Andrew, Aidan, Douglas, Hamish?

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 11:41

Thane of Cawdor - DP would LOVE it, he's a huge MacBeth fan (and local relevance too!).

Surname's English, but unusual and has a Scottish twist so quite handy.

I love Ruaridh
I also really like Innes.
Not so keen on Duncan TBH. It was going to be my name if I'd been a boy a I think I got a lucky escape!
James I like and was on our list as I consider it Scottish (after all our Scottish kings but sufficiently mainstream to appeal to an English DH - we are in the same boat there!)
I also like Euan from your list.
What about Donald? Good Scottish name and easy to spell and pronounce.

plonker · 12/09/2010 11:45

I love Ruaraidh, it's definitely the best on your list IMO

Can you use Rory if it's the spelling that dh objects to?

5inthebed · 12/09/2010 11:46

I adore the name Duncan. It is my favourite boys name but DH refused to name any of our three boys it Sad.

Fimbo · 12/09/2010 11:46

My ds's middle name is Duncan - top name!

Campbell
Crawford

But as they are surnames not sure an Englishman or even a Scotsman would approve!

Blair
Angus
Ross

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 12/09/2010 11:51

Gregor
Fergus
Angus

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 12:18

Donald is a big, big name in my family - candidate for middle name but obviously not with Duncan! Rory might be a goer with DP but to be honest it's sullied because I prefer the Gaelic version. Campbell's already been vetoed. As were Angus, and Hamish, and Blair. I'm getting pissed off because he says if I have to ask then I know what the answer will be - FFS!

I like Sam, James and Euan. Duncan is OK but I'm not so keen on Calum. Also like Aidan and Andrew from above suggestions.

How about

Alec
Argyle
Cory
David
Donald
Elliot
Fraser
Gavin
Irving
Lennox
Lyall
Maxwell
Niall
Ronald
Scott
Stuart

thumbwitch · 12/09/2010 12:22

Alexander - not particularly Scottish maybe but the nn Alec is more Scottish than Alex.

Duncan good - love Fergus but quite popular now - how about Dougal?

asdx2 · 12/09/2010 12:23

Cameron, Hamish or Callum would be my suggestions

onimolap · 12/09/2010 12:27

Alexander - a royal Scottish name - could be shortened to Sandy?

Craig? Wallace? Somerled? Sinclair? Kirk?

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 12:28

Ooh Alexander was deemed acceptable - I'd nickname him Eck or Sandy immediately of course! Love Cameron but that got a no.

We've both got a feeling this one's a girl so hopefully this is a moot point. But best not to land ourselves with a big domestic in the postnatal mists.

pilates · 12/09/2010 12:38

James
Angus
Archie
Ben

Takver · 12/09/2010 12:40

Euan, Duncan & James all sound like good strong names to me. Euan is of course spellable in many ways so will that be ok?

Why can't you have Donald as a first name - both spellable, and Scottish ...

TheFallenMadonna · 12/09/2010 12:44

Alec.

So much nicer than Alex for some reason.
