Girl's name pretty much decided - Isobel Ann.

Boy's name subject of hot debate.

I want something Scottish (would like something Gaelic really, I'm liking Ruaraidh just now) but DP's an Englishman and vetos anything his family won't be instantly able to spell.

So, so far we've got

Duncan
Sam (DS's choice, but he's 3 and Sam's a bear in a book he's got, so we can safely discount this I think)
James (DP likes but I think it's too common)
Euan (I love but DP says it's too common Hmm)
Calum (DP doesn't like)

Can anyone come up with anything else which I can run by him?

Donald is a no in DP's book. Diplomatically so, given it goes back generations on my side, and like I say it's a possible middle name. I don't really love it if I'm honest.

Euan or Ewan both fab, DP says no.

I need to trade him in for a Scot, don't I?! Grin

I'd go for Alexander, with nn Sandy - very Scottish, I'd say (Scot born and bred).

Or Jock?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 12/09/2010 13:00

I suppose Mungo is right out...?

SmacsGonePotty · 12/09/2010 13:06

Mungo is grim!
as is Jock.
Alexander with Sandy as nn is good.
Grin at ThatDamnedDog trading in English DH we had a complete name stand off for DD2. Had 2 boys names agreed but could not agree on anything for DD2. All my lovely Scottish suggestions were vetoed Sad (oh and some English ones too!)

cloudydays · 12/09/2010 13:07

I love Malcolm.

weepootle · 12/09/2010 13:11

I prefer James to Duncan, I wouldn't worry about popularity - dd only has 1 James in her whole school.

I do love Sandy as a shortening for Alexander though. Sandy is a great name.

fruitshootsandheaves · 12/09/2010 13:14

I have a James. He is 15, no others amongst his friends and there are none afaik in DS2's primary school.
Not as common as you think.

happiestblonde · 12/09/2010 13:14

My DP is Scottish and I'm English - his middlename is Ninian and he hides from it at all times. I like Aidan. However, we are going to get married in SURREY and I we are naming our children with English/Latin names. Poor DP.

zeeboo · 12/09/2010 13:17

Gregor?

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 14:27

I can't bring myself round to Aiden, it seems a bit too Darren/Wayne/Lee to me. There's already a Greig in the family. Ho hum.

I do have a secret Murdo itch that I'd enjoy scratching though, although I can guess the likely reaction ... Grin

Littlefish · 12/09/2010 14:33

Murdoch is gorgeous.

seeker · 12/09/2010 15:04

Kier/ Certainly Caltic...and lovely, I think.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 12/09/2010 15:55

I disagree re: Jock. I think it's a great name and is the name of my cousin. Named after my Grandfather.

DanceInTheDark · 12/09/2010 16:04

Is Ruaraidh the same as Rory? Why not just change the spelling? It will be the same name after all!

TechLovingDad · 12/09/2010 16:08

Give him a list of three, put a hideous one top so he thinks the others are good in comparison.

Wee Jock Poo Pong McPlop
Arran
Stirling

noddyholder · 12/09/2010 16:11

Hamish knew one years ago and he was gorge!

ThatDamnDog · 12/09/2010 16:23

Dance, they're pronounced differently. Not quite the same - sort of like Patrick and Padhraig.

Liking TechDad's suggestion. I guess the male mind really is as simple an organ as it appears to be at times!

DanceInTheDark · 12/09/2010 16:33

I thought they would be but i didn't know how to say it properly.

Love TLDs suggestion but what if your DH really likes Wee Jock Poo Pong? ShockWink

weepootle · 12/09/2010 18:11

How about Scott? I love it, and hardly ever used these days.

FrameyMcFrame · 12/09/2010 18:15

Love Duncan!

lola0109 · 12/09/2010 22:17

Lauchlan, Innes, Struan, Eamonn, Killian

Not sure if last two are scottish but they were on my list if DD2 was DS and I wanted Scottish/Celtic name to go with DD1 who is Ainslie.

I suppose I could suggest Ainslie? Or how about Lindsay for a boy? Or to use as Techloving suggestion?

Janoschi · 13/09/2010 00:14

Douglas? I LOVE Douglas. Little Dougie... :-) Or Neil.

thumbwitch · 13/09/2010 00:19

not Lachlan if you ever have any intentions of coming anywhere near Australia - it's so frequent out here.

Keith is an under-used somewhat Scottish name - how about that?

MissAnneElk · 13/09/2010 00:43

Rory - with that spelling
Cameron
Fraser
Campbell
Fergus
Wallace
Andrew
Kerr
Kirk

I like all of the above but my choice would probably be James/Jamie. I don't think it's particularly common at the moment. None in either of my DDs classes.

wrinklyraisin · 13/09/2010 01:39

What about Thane? It's unusual and Scottish and actually I quite like it!
