BJ?

My eldest son's initials are BJS. When he was about 4 months old, a particularly nasty neighbour started making fun saying 'how could I lumber a boy with the initials BJ' and laughing hysterically! I was really gutted as I hadn't thought of that but just fobbed her off that we loved the name so much, it didn't matter. Have we made an awful faux pas???? It's not like he is just BJ as in Ben Jones with no middle name etc ...Angry

It's only a problem if you refer to him as 'BJ' and I suppose he might get some ribbing in school.

My colleague's surname is Head. I bet you can't guess what she called her (now 30yr old) son.

ShowOfHands · 08/09/2010 21:46

I went to school with a chap with the first initials BJ.

Do you want an honest answer?

LynetteScavo · 08/09/2010 21:47

Just don't call your next child Baby Bop.

LynetteScavo · 08/09/2010 21:48

Your DH isn't called Barney, is he?

fivecrazymonkeys · 08/09/2010 21:49

UnholeyMoley - no I can't - what??
ShowOfHands - yes, that's why I asked ...

Hmmm, well, I wouldn't have chosen BJ tbh, but I don't think it's that bad.
It isn't anywhere near as bad as if his actual initials were BJ (with no middle name)!

How old is he? Could you add a another middle name between the B and the J?

ShowOfHands · 08/09/2010 21:59

He was teased relentlessly.

As soon as he was old enough, he dropped his middle name officially.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/09/2010 22:00

It wouldn't have been a set of initials that I would have chosen, but as there's a surname initial to come after the BJ, it's unlikely to be a massive problem.

cyanarasamba · 08/09/2010 22:02

DH has the initials BJM. Have never thought about it in this way - never been a problem for him as far as I know!

MummyLovesSadie · 08/09/2010 22:04

WHAT???? No it's not awful in the least little bit. It just shows the level of your neighbour's infantile sense of humour. I certainly wouldn't snigger if someone's first & middle initial was 'BJ' .

Just wondering why you are asking now if he is your eldest ds & this happened when he was four months old?

MrsRhettButler · 08/09/2010 22:06

i know a bj who is actually called bj. he is barry junior but no one really knows that, he is just bj and he is fine (in fact i think he likes it and if anyone is cheeky enough to mention it he asks if they would like to give him one!)

good character building name

onimolap · 08/09/2010 22:08

Really ignorant here: what's wrong with BJ?

fivecrazymonkeys · 08/09/2010 22:09

Just because now I finally have some time to sit and waste time on the computer!!! Just wanted to throw it out there and see if I was the most ignorant person on Earth!! And because I have become obsessed with names lately - long story!! For the record, I believe Posh and Beck's little boy Brooklyn is a BJ too - Brooklyn Joseph if I remember! And if it's good enough for him ....

Abbreviation for Blow Job, onimolap

fivecrazymonkeys · 08/09/2010 22:10

onimolap - Used as an acronym for blow job!!

Enlightenment! I am not known for having lived a reticent life, but have never heard that before (perhaps due to an excessively frank vocab anyhow)

jellybeans · 08/09/2010 22:24

We liked a name with the initials BJ had DD2 been a boy but we decided not to for this reason. My grandad was teased over his initials. However, I know one teenage girl who has BJB and she doesn't get teased.

tuggy · 09/09/2010 12:40

fivecrazymonekeys... I think she means that they called the baby Richard. as in "richard head" and with richard having the nickname Dick... you can guess the rest!

violethill · 09/09/2010 17:34

A friend of mine had a son with those initials for his first and middle name and she actually used to nn him 'BJ'!!! This was some years back, but even so!!

I used to cringe, and had to bite my tongue not to say something, but she seemed oblivious. It's not a combination I would choose, though if you don't make a big deal of it yourself it'll probably be fine.

ValiumSingleton · 09/09/2010 17:43

My parents gave me initials which I saw laughed at on here once, and I can see why. But nobody every knew my middle name, so it was never an issue for me. I can't remember one single time somebody teased me about this.

When does Richard ever have the NN Dick@? Know a few Richards and none of them goes by 'dick'. That's like saying charles is chuck which rhymes with Fuck! better not use Charles! Henry is Hank which rhymes with Wank, better not use Henry so.

FingonTheValiant · 09/09/2010 17:45

My dad's initials are BJP, and he's been known as "Beej", never BJ, and as far as I know no one has ever mentioned the link.

However DS1's middle names will start with a B and a J, and I must admit he will be xJBy rather than xBJy. I couldn't quite bring myself to do it the other way around.

Anyway, 'tis not so bad: DSIL's niece has just been born in the USA and given the middle name Blew. So she's xxxx Blew yyyyy. Imagine how much fun the other children will have once she gets to High School!

I think just make sure that he never gives his initials in the form of only BJ. So either he says "BJS", or he says "I'm Bob JS/ Bob J Smith". Hypothetical names supplied. And he should also avoid writing it on his exercise books at school.

sorrento56 · 09/09/2010 17:46

I remember reading that the Beckhams wanted to call their son BJ as a nickname but soon realised the error of their ways. I must be weird as I was careful to check that the initials didn't spell anything they shouldn't and the names couldn't be shortened at all.

ValiumSingleton · 09/09/2010 17:47

Blew..... oh dear God. Even Blue would be better because it makes you think of the colour and if it's a girls name blue sur name it is going to sound like Madison Blew Carter.

omg

SirBoobAlot · 09/09/2010 17:52

We put an extra middle name into DSs name so his initials weren't BJ.

I'm with SOH.

FingonTheValiant · 09/09/2010 17:55

Goodness knows why they didn't use Blue at least, I mean, what the hell is Blew there for anyway. The new name craze of using verb forms?

And she is Girls-name Blew Surname, we think "xxxx Blew the football team" or "xxxxx Blew the Maths teacher" will soon be variations of her name.
