BJ?

My eldest son's initials are BJS. When he was about 4 months old, a particularly nasty neighbour started making fun saying 'how could I lumber a boy with the initials BJ' and laughing hysterically! I was really gutted as I hadn't thought of that but just fobbed her off that we loved the name so much, it didn't matter. Have we made an awful faux pas???? It's not like he is just BJ as in Ben Jones with no middle name etc ...Angry

I used to know a lovely little BJ! He was the youngest of 4 DSs, and was actually called James - BJ was short for Baby James/Jim, which is what they had all called him. Was completely ignorant of the other conntations at the time (was a long time ago...) and didn't really think anything of it once I did know about them - he was a sweetie, he was called BJ. Not a big deal or faux pas imo.

I knew a BJ at school...I can't remember his actual name as that was what he was known as, he was one of the most popular boys!

moonminmama · 09/09/2010 22:14

I taught a young lad with the initials bj. He was a really nice, popular lad, played on rugby team etc and didnt take any stick at all. Tbh this did surprise me because as soon as I heard it it was the first thing that came to my mind. But only because I had expected the kids to take the Mick when they didn't.

I'm afraid I woud never, ever consider names that formed BJ as partial initials and I find it hard to understand why anyone would. It's just too great a hostage to fortune. Sorry, but I do think it was a mistake.

DinahRod · 10/09/2010 13:38

It's not as if you call him BJ or by his first amd mn together. It's a non-issue. Your neighbour is a twonk.

TessOfTheBurbs · 10/09/2010 14:17

I wouldn't have noticed that in a million years.

Then again, I had never heard the term BJ until I was about seventeen. I knew the term blow job, but didn't realise it had a coy abbreviation.

Most people write their initials with just two letters, first and last name, don't they? If it's an issue he needn't advertise his middle initial. But I don't think you did wrong in naming him that.

onimolap · 10/09/2010 23:51

Well, I suppose it must be liveable-with, as evidenced by Ben Jonson, Bianca Jagger, Bridget Jones and Boris Johnson.

Clary · 11/09/2010 00:06

I think it's a non issue as it's first and second names.

Tho I did go to school with a girl called Wendy Collinson (WC, loo y'see) and that's the only reason I can remember her name. Sorry. But it's different if it's your whole name.

DS2 was nearly FAB (but then he was a boy).

Clary · 11/09/2010 00:07

Sorry what I meant there was that FAB were the initials of the girl's names we had in mind.

Firawla · 11/09/2010 22:16

But he does not have to tell people his mn so how will anyone pick up on this? I don't think its compulsory to put middle name on school register is it? so if you feel that will help just put him fn + ln, then bj is avoided. If he went by BJ then yes I see the point but here i think there may not be such a need to panic

CheerfulYank · 12/09/2010 08:54

I know a guy who's actually called BJ for Brian Jr, and it's never bothered him.

My best friend's due in a few weeks and if their baby's a girl her initials will be GAG. :)

FrameyMcFrame · 12/09/2010 09:13

I think people get far too bothered about what a childs initials spell.
In reality, how often does this ever come to anyone attention in life? Especially a middle initial.

Op, don't worry, your neighbour is obviously a bit immature and silly.

Wanderingsheep · 12/09/2010 09:28

Don't tell people his middle name, then he will just be BS.

Our surname begins with J so I'm avoiding any first names beginning with B for DC2 as knowing my luck it would lead them to get teased at school!

mysteryfairy · 12/09/2010 18:41

BS would be a bit of an unfortunate abbreviation round here - have heard my teenage sons and their friends using it (when not actually wanting to swear in front of me)!

fivecrazymonkeys · 12/09/2010 21:18

Oh for goodness sake - are ANY initials safe then???????? Seems like we could make something out of anything at all!!!!!
