My mate is calling her little girl Minnie (she's now 10 days old).

I thought nothing of it, apart from the Minnie mouse/me connections until I mentionned it to a few friends who said that they used as a baby word for vulva/fanny {insert much argued over word of your choice here].

I had never come across this before but having re-read a few threads on this topic that some people do. It appears to be gaining in popularity.

So should I make my friend aware of this connotation of the name, in case it becomes like being called Fanny (as one of my aunts was much to our amusement as kids).

Or just leave it be.

No I wouldn't but then I have never heard of those connotations. Is Minnie short for anything?

Leave it. You will only upset her no matter how tactfully you broach the subject.

collision · 04/09/2010 21:15

it can be short for Minerva.

I wouldnt say anything.

Tis like Willy for William........

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 21:15

minnie isnt to my knowledge a euphemism for vagina.if name is labia minora, yes say something.minnie leave it be

Quattrocento · 04/09/2010 21:16

Tuppence?

notso · 04/09/2010 21:16

Disappointed I was expecting her to be called Fanjo.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 04/09/2010 21:17

i wouldn't,it's not like she is calling her Fanjo Wink

southeastastra · 04/09/2010 21:18

i haven't heard of the connotations either really it seems a bit :S

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 04/09/2010 21:18

Fanjo is a great name though!

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 21:20

the cutsey names for fanny are funny
tuppence?
minnie?
...what next flower/la la/fou-fou

goingbacktowork · 04/09/2010 21:23

minnie is quite a widely used euphemism for a vagina (at least here, London).

it is rather an unfortunate choice.

Doodleydoo · 04/09/2010 21:27

It wouldn't have occured to me that minnie was a reference to a fanjo, but then I named my dd after a well known product (actually I think the well known product came after the name and it never occured to me either so Hmm)anyway have never actually heard of it, (even in London), didn't know tuppence was a reference to it either..............obviously I am quite daft

However whatever you think it isn't really any of your business yabu. Smile - also names are very very personal so it can cause a potential rift!

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 21:28

really?well i never!is it commonly used?

EdgarAllInPink · 04/09/2010 21:29

Minnie doesn't mean that to me.

i do think of Minnie Mouse though.

it's not like she's been called Fanny-JO.

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 21:31

my advice, keep yer yap shut.say nowt

BosomForAPillow · 04/09/2010 21:33

I'm in London too and minnie/mini = fanny.

I would make her aware of it!

FlyingInTheCLouds · 04/09/2010 21:33

I think I won't mention it. i just feel a bit tight because in her situation I would prefer to know.

tuppence...I know!

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 21:34

but im guessing she doesnt know hence the choice

seaturtle · 04/09/2010 21:34

I've never called it my minnie. Wouldn't say anything if I did.

PYT · 04/09/2010 21:35

I've hearc people use Minnie to talk about their bits but it makes me cringe.

It's a cute name for a girl. Its a twee, cringey name for your vagina.

lovely74 · 04/09/2010 21:35

My SIL has named her bits that to her little boys. I'd never heard it before. Maybe it's a southern thing?
A friend of mine has a DD who gets called Minnie occaionally but I've never directly made the connection!

seeker · 04/09/2010 21:36

Minnie definitely means vulva here in Kent. My ds would have great difficulty controlling himeslf if a new girl called Minnie joined his class. Although I do hope he would try. But I'm not holding my breath. He did just about manage when he was introduced to an adult called Dick, but it required superhuman effort and me grabbing the back of his neck in a surreptitious but vicelike grip.......

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 21:38

lol, seeker funny post.imagining white knuckle hold and sniggering boy

BettySuarez · 04/09/2010 21:38

I could never understand why that music group (for babies) called themselves 'Musical Minis' as this was always as nickname for vagina where I grew up (Wales).

So much so, that I couldn't bring myself to attend the group for fear of errupting into childish bouts of giggling Blush

But I would say that amongst my friends, about half shared my view about the word but the other half could see nothing wrong with it.

I guess it's a regional thing.

In answer to your questions though (as to whether you should say something to your friend), errrrr.... No! that would be rude! Smile
