My mate is calling her little girl Minnie (she's now 10 days old).

I thought nothing of it, apart from the Minnie mouse/me connections until I mentionned it to a few friends who said that they used as a baby word for vulva/fanny {insert much argued over word of your choice here].

I had never come across this before but having re-read a few threads on this topic that some people do. It appears to be gaining in popularity.

So should I make my friend aware of this connotation of the name, in case it becomes like being called Fanny (as one of my aunts was much to our amusement as kids).

Or just leave it be.

Minnie isn't any different to Willy/William, and most people don't make a big deal about that name (although 5-6 year olds probably do Grin)

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 22:23

bit like ned.maybe ok for london chatterati.not in scotland.ned=plooky bawbag

seeker · 04/09/2010 22:23

Honestly. Tell her. Wouldn;t you want to know?

PlumBumMum · 04/09/2010 22:25

I wouldn't, just because this happened to me, I thought it was stupid, she has obviously never heard it so don't worry

my dd1s name is a very common name and I had never heard it used in that context at all until my MIL told me, but then I also had to tell MIL off for calling ds's penis Lily

Doodleydoo · 04/09/2010 22:26

But I lived in London with dd and never heard it, and lived in London for many years prior to dd and never heard it, was born and raised in Kent and have never heard it and now live back in kent and HAVE NEVER HEARD IT. WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD MY FANJO CALLED A MINNIE? Am so confused I really am, why do I seemn to be the only one? Am I hanging out in the wrong places? Confused

seeker · 04/09/2010 22:27

Why would you not tell her? Wouldn't you want to know?

I don't think emay peope call a penis a Lily. Minnie is in veyr common usage for a vulva.

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 22:29

have revised my opinion,if is common parlance.do tell.as i said if someone was going to pick ned in scotland id say

PlumBumMum · 04/09/2010 22:29

Seeker think its only my MILGrin

onepieceoflollipop · 04/09/2010 22:30

I quite like ned (is is equivalent to willy?)

grammar · 04/09/2010 22:32

To Rhianninthescribbler, Muffy's real name is Rhiannon!

Thissideofchannel · 04/09/2010 22:32

No, I don't think many people call a penis a Lily, but many call it Willy, don't they?

Hence, I'd probably avoid William.

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 22:36

ned in scotland=plooky chancer.much derision.might be ok for chaterati but no way in scotland

ZENZIZENZIZENZIC · 04/09/2010 22:39

onepieceoflollipop, there were so many bad names in our book, I doubt it was a mistake.

I just can't wait to find the poor unfortunate named Anal Grin

onepieceoflollipop · 04/09/2010 22:42

thanks for translation sm. See it all varies so much regionally and betw England/Scotland/Wales etc :)

onepieceoflollipop · 04/09/2010 22:44

ZEN was it 1000 baby names?

See I think what happened was they only managed to find 943, but to keep the number nice and neat they made up the rest!

(943 baby names doesn't really have the same ring to it does it?) Grin

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 22:44

in about a boy ned=nice chatteratti name in norf london.im scotland=social death

MummyLovesSadie · 04/09/2010 22:46

Yes I grew up partly in Kent, & Minnie = fanjo. If she has her heart set on the name however, please do not burst her balloon. We all know how bloody hard it is to come up with a name for your baby & once you have found one you finally love it'd be a shame to find out that the good folk of Kent & London are tittering at it!

VivaLeBeaver · 04/09/2010 22:47

That poor kid will be hounded at secondary school, you must tell the mum before she registers the name!

onepieceoflollipop · 04/09/2010 22:47

I forgot about ned in about a boy.

I think I read about a donkey (a sweet little donkey) called Ned so that would put me off using it for a child.

btw I have no idea why I am on the baby names topic, I have no intention of having any further babies!

Minxie1977 · 04/09/2010 22:50

My aunt met DD for first time a little while ago and {in a chat about nappy rash} asked 'how's her minnie'!?! HAVE TO TELL HER

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 22:52

well i never knew minnie=vagina

dott · 04/09/2010 22:54

I am in the south east. After much debate over this issue and the numerous options we decided on minnie as the least worst slang for dd to use. We did not want her to be out of step with her peers and many of her female friends call this area minnie.
I would tell her.

Minxie1977 · 04/09/2010 22:55

Minnie, mooie, foo foo, fanjeeta - it's a whole nother thread sm

scottishmummy · 04/09/2010 22:57

quite an education this has been

ZENZIZENZIZENZIC · 04/09/2010 22:59

onepieceoflollipop I think mine was 10,000 baby names. This leaves a lot more room for awfulness. Smile

Or rather page fillers that only the criminally insane would use.
