any ideas for strong yet dainty girls names or is this an impossiblity
too suit a dainty little girl who judging by her relatives will remain petite but will probably be strong willed and determined

Miranda? Stephanie? Violet? Darcey? Imogen? Zara? Collette? Arianne? Yvette?

SoupDragon · 28/08/2010 13:27

I would be wary of deliberately naming her something dainty in case she turns out to be anything but.

Stephanie, Sophie/ Sophia, Harriett, Aimee???

traceybath · 28/08/2010 13:28

Well I have a dainty girl and she's called Beatrice.

Strong willed though.

I have a teeny, dainty; and extremely strong willed and determined Ella.

YunoYurbubson · 28/08/2010 13:40

I am a bit uncomfortable with letting her physical slightness play such a part in choosing her name. It smacks of pigeonholing her based solely on her appearance. I think girls face enough of this, without it starting before she is born.

In fact, she might not be strong willed and determined either. Let her be who she is, not who you assume she is ging to be.

misdee · 28/08/2010 13:41

My dainty, sweet looking girls, with HUGE personalities and call Serena and Sophie.

traceybath · 28/08/2010 13:55

Imarried and Misdee - lovely names your girls have Smile

misdee · 28/08/2010 14:04

my non-dainty girls (as dainty as elephants can be lol) and who charge about like mad, are Nicole and Lauren.

smilingserenely · 28/08/2010 14:10

yuno this is the problem i dont want to pigeon hole her she is dainty and likely to remain so but i dont want an ultra feminine ultra flowery name so that if like her mum she is a determined young lady it will still suit . i love matilda but dh thinks it is too strong a name and has vetoed it . he wants something really feminine like arabella or felicity which i think are too girly

Matilda is lovely and tilly as a nn is very sweet.

Tabitha is also lovely and similar.

smilingserenely · 28/08/2010 14:58

have a tabitha so not an option and i think that matilda would go with it perfectly

I think Matilda is nice actually, feminine but not girly, though it would always make me think of the Roald Dahl book :) a bit odd that your DH would dislike a name for being 'too strong' - would he say that if you were naming a boy? Is being strong a bad thing for girls/women?

I was always small for my age as a child and still am fairly short/slight build as an adult, but can't remember a time when I wouldn't have been appalled to be referred to as 'dainty' or told I was weak...

What about Eleanor or Sarah, or Charlotte?

PYT · 28/08/2010 16:12

Giselle. It has 'gazelle' connotations for me. Wanted it for my DD, but we are a family of chunky 6 foot women Grin

londonartemis · 28/08/2010 16:52

Phoebe?
Amelia?

sianyc18 · 28/08/2010 18:05

tara

Purplebuns · 28/08/2010 18:11

Another vote for Sophie here, I have a very petite and strong willed at 16 month old Dd (heaven help me!) called this :o

smilingserenely · 28/08/2010 18:23

not sure what dhs problem is with strong names .other dds have strong names but not this time apparently!

I have an extremely dainty but very tough and determined Ava. Was not going to be her name but knew it as soon as we saw her.

Cher87 · 28/08/2010 19:21

Isla was at the top of my Girls list.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 28/08/2010 19:23

Delilah Smile

I love that name.

Clary · 28/08/2010 19:28

Smiling, is yr DD born already?

I too would be wary of giving a child a name on the basis of daintiness or otherwise.

When I was young I was going to be tiny - my mum is short and petite. I was v little at age 8-9-10; suddenly at 13 I shot up, and 5ft 6 and size 12-14; a "dainty" name would seem very odd on me!

Not trying to be difficult tho.

What looks as if it suits her? Lots of the suggestions on here are lovely lovely names. Matilda is very nice and Tillie is a super nickname.
