Don't want popular names, what you think of these?

Bonners · 28/08/2010 11:01

So DP and I are dead set against naming our child one of the 10 or 20 most popular names and thought we had come up with nice ones that not everyone would have.

Do you think these are very popular just now? We're in Edinburgh, that probably has a bearing on it.

BOY:
Noah
Benjamin
Sebastian

GIRL:
Maggie (to be Margaret officially)

We're sort of stuck on Maggie as a name for a girl but names for boys are not coming easily.

Thanks!

Maggie is lovely but the boys names on your list are very popular

collision · 28/08/2010 11:06

Maggie is great but the rest are very popular!

How about

Atticus

Cassius

Malachi

Seth

Moses

Caleb

sorky · 28/08/2010 11:06

Maggie is popular where I am

ValiumSingleton · 28/08/2010 11:13

I love Maggie! and have never met one under fifty. It's so cute, and Margaret has great nick names and will come back into fashion. Good choice imo.

Your boys names are a bit less quirky, more predictable. Ben not as common as Jack/Max/Finn, but it's up there. NOah very trendy and will date. Sebastian is one of those names that might not be popular nationally, but if you live in the environment where you feel comfortable using it, then in that pocket of the World it will be popular. Does that make sense? There are either none at all, or a good few.

What about Saul, Robbie, Guy?

Bonners · 28/08/2010 11:34

Arrgh, I thought so. I'm bummed because I love Noah and Ben. We're pretty certain there aren't a lot of Sebastians around these parts so might go for that one.

The discussions have been endless as I'm Canadian and DP is Scottish so name connotations are very different. I originally loved Imogen but DP wouldn't have it because he said it was too posh. He liked the name Bruce but that is a TERRIBLE name where I'm from.

Pretty sure Maggie isn't a popular name up here considering how much the Scots still despise Margaret Thatcher!

Thanks for all suggestions, liking Caleb!

one of my friend's newborn is called Maggie. And yes the boy's names are popular. If i had a boy, it wouldve of been called Caleb.

tammytoby · 28/08/2010 11:40

Margaret/Maggie is gorgeous! And not common at all. Lovely choice!

All your boys' names, especially Ben and Seb, are very common round here. Noah is less widespread but still very popular.

Caleb is a nice choice, or how about Quentin? My dh is also Canadian, by the way Smile.

onimolap · 28/08/2010 11:41

Ben and Noah are popular round our way too.

How about Aidan? Or Cuthbert?

ValiumSingleton · 28/08/2010 12:47

Bruce is totally cool. I'd go for that one over Noah any day of the week!

ben5 · 28/08/2010 12:52

ben and noah were very popular in plymouth but hardly hear them used in oz. i think benjamin is a wonderfull name!
i also like noah but thats because all the noahs i have meet are good

mopsyflopsy · 28/08/2010 13:19

I agree - Ben, Seb and Noah are very (too?) popular.

Margaret (Maggie) is lovely and not very common at all. Great choice!

PYT · 28/08/2010 16:12

Like your choices, but the boy's names are all quite popular.

pop1973 · 28/08/2010 16:14

I like the name Noah, its a lovely name, so unusual and a very Christian name if you are religious !!

Love the name.

LetThereBeRock · 28/08/2010 16:47

I love all of your boys names, but really hate Maggie/Margaret. It has such an ugly sound imho.

GrumpyFish · 28/08/2010 17:36

We live not too far from you. I have a 2 year old Benjamin. I have always loved this name but was tempted not to use it due to popularity issues, but actually haven't met another baby / toddler one yet, and we go to a lot of groups. I think it might be more common south of the Border. Neither have I met a baby Noah, but I do know a little Sebastian and a little Maggie (although I think they're both still quite unusual round here).

A1980 · 28/08/2010 20:16

Margaret is a big family name of mine so it may feature as a middle name for me. I'm not naming a DD Margaret though as there are already too many in family.

My grandmother was named Margaret, she namedone of her daughters (my Aunt) Margaret, Auntie Margaret named one of her daughters Margaret so I have a cousin Margaret!

Good name though. Maggie is cute for a girl. Be aware that one nickname for Margaret is Peggy. My grandmother and my aunt used to get called that and they despised it.

PaulineCampbellJones · 28/08/2010 20:18

Lots of those boys names here but that's probably because they are nice names. Have never come across a baby Maggie though (apart from the Simpsons).

LiquoriceLila · 28/08/2010 21:25

Ben is very common in the north west, DS1 (age7) has 4 in his class. I think Noah's become pretty common as well, I do like the name Noah though

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/08/2010 21:28

Benjamin/ Ben v v v v popular in London.

So is Caleb.

Clary · 28/08/2010 22:13

Benjamin or Ben is v v popular. I know at least 7 or 8 of primary age.

Noah and Seb less so; I know 2 of each.

I could never call a child Maggie. Sorry. I am a socialist who was a child in the 1970s.

laundrylover · 28/08/2010 22:18

I know a fantastic Maggie who is 13Smile....just Maggie though.

Loads of Bens round here and a good few Noahs.

I also know a Sebastian (his brother is Benjamin!) but he is shortened to Basty all the time!!

polkadottytotty · 28/08/2010 22:27

Love Maggie.
Noah is quite popular here (Shropshire) although Ben and Sebastian are less so, don't know any.
I prefer Benedict to Benjamin though.

Avocadoes · 28/08/2010 22:37

We are in London and there are three Bens in DDs nursery class. There is also a Noah. No Seb's though (do read Bridesheads Revisited before using Sebastian. If yr DP thought Imogen posh I'm not sure how he can consider Sebastian).

I love Maggie.

prizeelliott · 28/08/2010 23:11

Here in Wales the above names are all relatively common...although Welsh variants are Magi and Noa!

Friends daughter named Marged (welsh Margret)but everyone affectionatley knows her as Margaritta Prakhatan (sorry sure spelling an issue!!!)

I love the older generation names, and we as extended family seemed to have used them (not concious decision to have co-ordinating kids names...promise!)
Beti
Nellie
Elsi
Sid
Megan
Nancy
Sarah

Also loved Seth, Stan and Archie, but have not had the pleasure of naming a son!!
My mum is named Hazel...although prob v unfashionable I love it!!! Imagine a little baby Hazel!!! Sorry I'm waffling!!!

BikeRunSki · 28/08/2010 23:15

I know several children with all your names (boys and girls), all about 2.
