Chip, short for Christopher? Stuck for boys name...

I really like a lot of the popular names from my generation like Matthew, Andrew, Peter, that seem to have gone out of fashion a bit recently, but there's something I really love about Christopher shortened to Chip, and DH suggested it, so at least we agree.

But I'm not into 'weird for the sake of it' names, and suspect Chip might fall into that category...?

Would people be trying to keep a straight face when we told them?

If we get a girl, we're sorted, so much more choice for girls!

Open to ideas, so comments/ suggestions would be appreciated.

I would think of Biff and Chip from the ORT learn to read books every reception child appears to bring home.

I don't think Chip is very unusual and it is a known nn for Christopher. Probably more American style nn though.

Hulababy · 25/08/2010 22:46

Although now I think of it in ORT I think it is Kipper that is the nn for Christopher. Chip was something else; can't remember his name.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/08/2010 22:46

I would also think of Biff and Kipper and Chip from DS's reading books.

I realy dont like it, its sounds very Disney..... your choice at the end of the day people call thier kids worse.

Christopher is lovely though (bias as its dps name!)

usualsuspect · 25/08/2010 22:47

Chip? he will be called Chris ..trust me

Habbibu · 25/08/2010 22:47

Very American, I think. Like Kit as a short version of Christopher.

Tippychoocks · 25/08/2010 22:47

I thought Kit was short for Christopher? Never got why though to be honest.
Chip does sound American but if you like it go ahead, why not? If it's too much, fall back on Christopher. Do you like Chris though, in case you do fall back on Christopher and people shorten it?

meadowlarks · 25/08/2010 22:47

I personally quite like it but I am a big fan of Chip Esten. It's very American, I think a lot of people here would logically shorten Christopher to Chris, but that doesn't mean you can't get them to use Chip. Have you thought of Chuck? I always thought that was cool.

MummyLovesSadie · 25/08/2010 22:48

No likey.

SirBoobAlot · 25/08/2010 22:49

Sorry, are you suggesting Chip as the name on the birth certificate, or just as his nickname?

NoahAndTheWhale · 25/08/2010 22:51

Makes me think of Oxford Reading Tree. Except I refer to them as Biff, Kip and Chipper.

Prefer Kit I think.

Leapoffaith · 25/08/2010 22:51

Thanks, this is my first, so I'm unfamiliar with ORT, just googled it though, used in 80% of schools according to wiki. Hmm... Not sure if that makes it better or worse!

Yeah cat, one of the reasons I like it is that he'd be able to shorten it differently later if he wanted. Like you say we could just announce that he's called christoper and shorten it as we want.

I always thought Chip was short for Charles. Confused

wisteria12 · 25/08/2010 22:53

Leapoffaith - As meadow suggested, if you want something different, I like Chuck more than Chip. I once knew a very interesting guy whose given name was Christopher but everyone called him Chuck, so it has good connotations for me.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/08/2010 22:54

My sisters both insist of calling Dp Toffer! rofl. Grin

Leapoffaith · 25/08/2010 22:55

SirBoobalot, we'd register as Christopher, but we'd call him Chip pretty much from the start. Chris is OK, my best mate's name is Kit though.

Isn't Chuck short for Charles?? Hmm

MummyLovesSadie · 25/08/2010 22:57

Just found this:

Chip is a preppy nickname that is not short for any particular name, but rather to indicate that one is named after another aka "chip off the old block." One finds that men named Chip usually have a roman numeral after their real names.

SirBoobAlot · 25/08/2010 22:57

Well tbh if you're registering as Christopher then I don't think it matters particularity. Just remember when he's older, he might want to be called something else - and that he might not actually suit it once he's born!

Leapoffaith · 25/08/2010 22:59

Titsalina, I had an (American) boss called Topher Gaylord a few years back. No kidding! Always made me giggle inside. You wouldn't mess though, he used to do those mega 5 marathons in a week across the sahara type things.... Not my cup of tea!

I never could understand this nickname stuff...I don't think you can choose a nickname, all my dcs are known by nicknames their mates call them ..I use their full names

TheCrackFox · 25/08/2010 23:01

You'd have to be good at running if you were called Topher Gaylord.

Leapoffaith · 25/08/2010 23:04

Thanks MLS, I see what you mean. I don't have any strong feelings about it sounding American, no problem it anyway.

Wisteria, chuck is nice too.

Usualsuspect I'm sure I said this to you recently but I totally agree with you! Surely a nickname is something that kind-of naturally develops from someone's proper name. I don't see how a nickname can be pre-assigned.
