Chip, short for Christopher? Stuck for boys name...

I really like a lot of the popular names from my generation like Matthew, Andrew, Peter, that seem to have gone out of fashion a bit recently, but there's something I really love about Christopher shortened to Chip, and DH suggested it, so at least we agree.

But I'm not into 'weird for the sake of it' names, and suspect Chip might fall into that category...?

Would people be trying to keep a straight face when we told them?

If we get a girl, we're sorted, so much more choice for girls!

Open to ideas, so comments/ suggestions would be appreciated.

I can never quite see the point of picking a nice name - and Christopher is a really nice name - and actually calling your child something else. Chip isn't even a name! If you're going to shorten it to anything, shorten it to Chris.

Nicknames never really work out anyway, My Sons registered name is Harry, he is called Lou by nearly everyone. Confused

Tippychoocks · 25/08/2010 23:09

I fear that if you name him Chip, at some stage someone will refer to him as "The Chipster"

usualsuspect · 25/08/2010 23:12

Grin @ the chipster

Leapoffaith · 25/08/2010 23:13

Thanks for the comments guys, just read them all back and realised it isn't exactly a ringing endorsement... A 'quite like' from meadow, and lots of no likeys.

Oh well we've still got 6 weeks, maybe inspiration will strike... Otherwise he might just get Chip and have to live with it/ re-nickname himself later.

Came on to post almost exactly wot Hula said.

yy Kipper is Christopher; Biff is Barbara Hmm now what is Chip?

I to prefer Kit as nn.

Agree with others re nicknames tho. DD's is Bear in the family which has nowt whatever to do with her name. Her pals abbreviate her name in a way I am Not Keen On. Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/08/2010 23:29

I think Chip is Charles in the ORT books.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 25/08/2010 23:29

Chip is David, I believe.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 25/08/2010 23:32

Cross-posted, but I think I am right. Well, obviously I think I'm right. But I shall prove it by doing the ceremonial "I Am Right And You Are Wrong" dance. With the optional hand gestures...

Leapoffaith · 25/08/2010 23:57

Ok this school reading book thing could kill it for me.

DH just suggested Laurence. Bit posher sounding than I'd really like, but we like all nn variations we can think of.

Any lurking books/ TV characters with that one?

I taught a Laurence. Was known as Loz. Never found that nickname particularly appealing.

nooka · 26/08/2010 06:22

I like Laurence. The ones I know who shorten it use Lance and Laurie. ds has a friend called Larry, which seems very 70's to me.

My uncle was known in the family as "Chip" because he was really very very similar to his dad. His real name was Ian (which everyone else called him). Apparently it is short for either Christopher or Charles, but it doesn't feel like it's related to either of those names to me.

mamaloco · 26/08/2010 06:42

One of my best freinds is Christophe, we call him "toph".
Chris is more girly, Chip remind me of that awful 80s series with biker cops in california (?). A bit to close to "chimp" too (lot of teasing foreseen at school), but then my christophe is very hairy so we might switch Grin.
Otherwise it is a nice name and I only met nice people call christophe/christopher

CupcakesHay · 26/08/2010 08:28

My DH is a Christopher - and gets called Chris, Chrissy (in a whiney voice when I want something!) and Kit by his family.

I like Chip though.

Mahraih · 26/08/2010 10:27

Chip?

And Pin?

Sorry! It's cute, but for a cartoon character, or a kid with no front teeth, red hair and many, many freckles, and a best friend called The Bear. Or something.

Lovethesea · 26/08/2010 11:02

Chips. I just think of chips. But then I am trying to lose weight so I think of food a lot at the moment ....... Blush

GREENWING · 26/08/2010 11:14

Hi
Christopher is a great choice but personally I would advise caution in using Chip. It is harder to get away with unusual names for boys and in my experience as a primary teacher, boys are more likely to get teased ... chipmunk, fish and chips, chip off the old block! My nephew was given a nickname but they used his given name of Paul when he went to school. He could be Chip at home and Christopher at nursery and school but when he gets to adolescence you have then have the problem that the name you have always used for him is not the one used by all his friends - almost like having a split personality.
Easier to call him Chris (I love Kit but it is considered posh by some!) or to choose a different name.

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 12:51

Ooh Laurence is nice, with Laurie as nickname. Though I can see it becoming "Loz" at school. I think Chip is quite nice, not keen on Chris though and I think it's almost inevitable at some stage.

mathanxiety · 26/08/2010 16:47

I dislike Chip, and Chuck too. They're middle aged American names.

I think Kit is a far nicer abbreviation of Christopher.

Laurence I dislike as I don't like the nn Larry, and I think of Laurie as a girl's name.

deaddei · 26/08/2010 16:51

Please not Chip. Or Spike.

I don't like Chip I'm afraid. Chris is much nicer!

Leapoffaith · 26/08/2010 23:03

Hmmm, this discussion has pretty much put me off Chip, so I am either tragically easily influenced, or I didn't feel that strongly about it to start with.

We know a Laurence who's Lol, and I quite like Laurie, Lance, even Loz, so wouldn't be forever trying to push people back to a particular nn.

I'm glad I asked on here because I was genuinely interested in what people would be thinking but not saying. On the other hand friends whose kids' names have seemed like odd choices at first have grown on me with time.

Oh god I don't know, you're right cat64, this naming business is a minefield. It can be a very obvious staement of all sorts of things I'd rather not make a statement about - background, tastes, aspirations....

So all I need is somthing classless, timeless, but preferably not deathly dull.... is that too much to ask?!
