How popular is Monty?

Have you come across many?

My DH really likes it (I'm still holding out for Patrick, despite some concerns), but I'm not sure it's really us. I think it might be a bit aspirational for us - he'll go to the local comprehensive, not a private school.

What do you think?

That's what I meant Valium, but you said succinctly - 'harder to pull off'.

And I feel that it needs a longer name, I just don't like Montgomery, Montague or Montmorency (and he's a dog in Three Men in a Boat!).

If it was twins, we'd be sorted, though thankfully it isn't!

Ours is Montgomery, and everyone calls him Monty, although the children have been calling him Mont for ages, which is quite nice, and I can see it carrying on to teenagedom.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/08/2010 13:58

So, grumpypants, are you very posh? :)

Prefer Monty short for Montagu.

rachel234 · 26/08/2010 14:14

Why is there such an obsession with labelling names according to 'class'...Hmm. I don't think this is the case in most other countries.

Names on mumsnet are often described as too 'chavvy' or too 'posh' and it gets people really worried about saddling their child with the 'wrong' name.

Shouldn't we all try start to judge people on who they are, not what name their parents chose for them?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/08/2010 14:45

grumpypants - I didn't mean to offend you and apologies if I did, I'm just curious.

rachel there are also many threads on here too which slate parents for picking names that will get their children bullied (I happen to think that children don't generally bully children for their name alone, it's usually other things), but I am concerned with giving my children the 'wrong' name. As I said before, this little boy won't be going to private school, but will be state educated. I want to make sure I get the right name for him.

So, do you have an opinion on the popularity of Monty, or did you just want to tell me off?

I've never met a Monty but it sounds lovely. Distinctive!

rachel234 · 26/08/2010 14:56

thereislight, I love Monty!

In my experience the only names that get teased are 'silly' ones e.g. Willy (William), Bendy Dick (Benedict) or Gayboy (Gabriel) type names. Otherwise kids couldn't care less if their mates are called Monty or Matty or whatever.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/08/2010 15:07

Thanks rachel - and I'm sorry that I was short with you (I love Benedict but have been put off by the 'Bendy Dick' nickname).

Funnily enough my DH is called William - and I don't think he ever got called Willy by anyone but his Dad, but that would put me off to be honest.

And I know kids don't really care - like I said earlier - I suppose I'm more bothhered about appearing to be aspirational - as if I'd like to send my children to private school, but can't.

A friend of my aunt's has a Monty - but they are very different from us - they do privately educate their children and I think that's at the back of my mind.

It's a great name.

Obviously. Hmm

I don't know any.

Or any Montgomerys.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/08/2010 18:05

Grin @ Monty

Friend of the family just had a Monty (i think it was montgomery) - literally 2 weeks ago - brother is Max.

Sadly, ot me, Monty will always be my green budgie i had that use to do nothing but poo everywhere...

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/08/2010 18:48

So would you think it's becoming popular? The next 'Alfie'? Though it's definitely not an 'urchin' name.

I know what you mean about budgies - though I failed to remember that I once had a budgie named Nancy and that's the name we picked for DD2!!

OP posts:
CupcakesHay · 26/08/2010 19:02

Aaah - but nancy's a lovely name - and def more person than pet, IMO (and sorry to any Monty parents out there)

Personally, I don't like the name.

Hard to say if it's getting more popular. Someone said on another baby name thread, just cos it seems popular on here, doesn't mean it is necessarily (sorry - can't spell that word... it just looks wrong)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/08/2010 19:30

is fine - easy way to remember is one collar (c) 2 socks (ss)!

This naming thing is SO hard. I had a really long long list of girls' names... :(

StayFrosty - that's lovely - is your Monty just Monty or do you have a longer name on his BC?

Oh - I like Francis - would love Frank - only our surname begins with 'F' and I think he could sound like a gangster! I forgotten that Uncle Monty had been called that!!!

OP posts:
jennyee · 27/08/2010 10:18

There is a Monty in DS's class, he's the most adorable little boy. His brother is called Theo.

MamaVoo · 27/08/2010 10:32

I only know a canine Monty - named after Uncle Monty from Withnail and I - but there's nothing wrong with it as a person name IMO.

TheNextMrsDepp · 27/08/2010 10:37

There is a Monty at our preschool, but I always associate the name with donkeys (my aunt had one called Monty).

And Uncle Monty, of course!
