Nancy - last minute wobble!

Apologies to all of those who've helped me with this decision before.

We decided that this baby was a Nancy pretty much at the 20 week scan, but did what we said we wouldn't do and bloody told people (along with a load of other names that we might like). With 3 weeks to go, I'm now a little concerned.

Reaction has been very mixed to say the least. We both love it and I know that's the important thing, but is it so terrible?

Most likely to be Nancy Eve (DS is Isaac).

Your thoughts please.

love it!!

morganbuffay · 19/08/2010 22:03

It's lovely. Nancy Eve is a gorgeous combination, too.

nigglewiggle · 19/08/2010 22:05

Love it. We had luke warm responses to both our choices, but we are totally happy with them further down the line and everyone else seems to have got used to them.

Fel1x · 19/08/2010 22:06

Gorgeous! Goes with Isaac so well too.
Good choice!

rusmum · 19/08/2010 22:07

go for it xxx

SirBoobAlot · 19/08/2010 22:09

As long as you're prepared for her to be called "Nancy-boy" and have "Oompa pa pa" mentioned at every stage in her life... I prefer Eve, tbh.

Though if you like it, go for it - we had iffy responses to DSs name when we told them (did the same as you), but it suits him and everyone calls him it without a problem now. People will get used to it.

lifeas3plus1 · 19/08/2010 22:12

Love It.

Nancy was on our girls shortlist before we found out Ds1 was a boy.

Nancy Eve is gorgeous.

KittyBigglesworth · 19/08/2010 22:13

I don't like it much, I know it's trendy at the moment but it just reminds me of someone living in squalor having their head punched (Oliver Twist)and I know of a mother who had drug dealer associations who has given her child that name. I think that the BBC programme where Andrew Lloyd Webber was seeking a Nancy influenced them because they certainly had never read a book in their lives. The whole Mitford association that people fall over themselves to imitate is amusing to say the least, some members of that family had some very odd motives.

pooka · 19/08/2010 22:16

Love love love Nancy. DD is 7 and I love her name, but if ds1 or ds2 had been girls, Nancy was top of my list. I love my boys, but feel a little sad that will never get to use the name.

I like it because it's not wishy washy. Seems timeless, so not especially trendy, but not an old-woman name. It puts me in mind of Nancy from the Swallows and Amazons books. A confident, strong girl of good character.

Go for it!

Lionstar · 19/08/2010 22:17

Nancy and Florence are the 'in' names around here, every other baby seemingly!

Not my taste, but nice enough Smile

horatia · 19/08/2010 22:19

Personally I'm not that keen on Nancy, but there's nothing wrong with it.

redllamayellowllama · 19/08/2010 22:19

I had no idea it was trendy at the moment - was aware of the BBC programme, but can't say it had influenced me in my decision. I was a bit obsessed with Nancy Drew as a child and it's stemmed from there.

Likewise the Mitford association - am in no way trying to 'imitate' anything (what with having Jewish heritage and all..!) there. Although I also quite like the name Unity.

See - I must love it, I've already got a whole load of defences set up!

All the other positive responses are most supportive - thank you.

Where are you Lionstar? I've not heard it anywhere (in South East London).

OP posts:
pooka · 19/08/2010 22:23

Also wrt Mitford connotations, it seems a bit much to rule the name out because of Diana and Unity.

redllamayellowllama · 19/08/2010 22:26

Agreed pooka.

Nancy was on my list, wouldn't have suited DS though. I love it, have not met any in the baby circles I move in although I'm in SE London too.

If it being too popular worries you check the ONS website, the data is about 12 months old but will give you an indication.

pooka · 19/08/2010 22:30

No Nancies round here - SE London.

tribpot · 19/08/2010 22:31

I'm a Nancy - I never get called Nancy boy or am referred to Oom pah pah :)

Go for it - we are ladies of quality! Eve also a very lovely name.

Casmama · 19/08/2010 22:31

If you like it go for it. I find Nancy Eve a little difficult to say though due to the two vowel sounds - a different middle name may sound smoother.

Lionstar · 19/08/2010 22:33

North Hampshire

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 19/08/2010 22:37

You like it, there's nothing outrageously terrible about it -- don't let the fact that it's not absolutely everyone's cup of tea put you off.

I do think Nancy and Eve run together a little, mind you.

Roz14 · 19/08/2010 22:40

I think it is a lovely name.

If you love the name then use it. You will only regret it in the future. You just need to consider if it is a name that you have always loved or a name you have chosen because of it's increasing popularity. If it is something you have wanted for a long time, go for it Smile.

Hope this is making sense, I am a little tired at moment.

KittyBigglesworth · 19/08/2010 23:35

redllama, the comment about the Mitford imitation naming was from experience of a few people outside of MN, I hope it didn't seem as though it was aimed at you. The Nancy Drew association is sweet and if you really like it nothing should deter you, certainly not my odd preferences! Going off to eat a Big Foot ice lolly.

nancy75 · 19/08/2010 23:38

i really am a nancy, and nobody has ever siad om pa pa to me!
