Help for boys' names still needed

OK - so we had our 20 week scan for DC4 today.

I can say a farewell to Posy, Tess or Betsy and hello to... well that's the question, isn't it?

Been on here asking the same question before - nothing much has changed, I still like Rufus, DH doesn't, DH likes James, I'm putting my foot down.

Patrick is a favourite but there is a cousin who will have the same name including surname (admittedly he's grown up) and I think this is a problem.

Benedict - was a contender until a very recent thread.

Angus we both like - but our cat is called Angus.

Hamish - we both also like - but it's DS's middle name.

I know I've still got until after Christmas - but I'm the sort of person who likes to get these things sorted.

I know so many of you have already made suggestions - and I'm very grateful, I just need to convince DH.

Please help!

Who slagged off Benedict????

Eh? Eh?

I like all of your choices, I know of one Rufus and he is gorgeous (Benedict is my fave though, DS2's name).

Love Patrick as well, vetoed by DH.

BelligerentGhoul · 18/08/2010 17:44

I love Posy and Tess (c0nsidered both of them for my dds) so will join you in saying a sad goodbye to them.

Benedict is a brilliant name - I adore it.

PositiveVibes · 18/08/2010 17:45

There was a Rufus thread on here recently - OP got upset cos someone said Rufus was a dog's name Shock

Actually I like Rufus, Patrick and Angus. James is v.popular though, at least around here as is Hamish. Personally not that keen on Benedict for no particular reason, and I think it'd just get shortened to Ben anyway.

suspiria · 18/08/2010 17:46

I love Rufus and Benedict such lovely names

Lizzylou · 18/08/2010 17:55

Our Benedict is a Benny, but I know what you mean about it just being Ben, seems a shame.

tummytickler · 18/08/2010 18:14

I like Rufus, Benedict and Patrick (Paddy is so cute!).
I could not call my child the same name as my pet - big no-no in my book!
And I am on the fence about using another dc middle name, but my gut reaction is no.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 18/08/2010 18:29

No one slagged off Benedict - just someone pointed out a nickname - they knew a boy who had been called Bendy-Dick throughout school. It hadn't even occured to me (I'm so innocent, you see :)) And I love it, particularly because of the delectable Mr Cumberbatch - but I think it's also a shame that it gets (mostly) shortened to 'Ben' seems such a waste.

The thing is tummytickler - Tess is also the name of BIL's dog and my parents have a dog called Paddy.

What do you think about having the same name as a grown up cousin, then? Would that put any of you off? The thing with this particular family is that there's a lot of name sharing already. In fact, our DS is has the same name as his grandfather and nephew has same name as my DH.

Ah, hadn't thought of Bendy Dick!
Mind you, if you met my youngest you'd realise that he would only be teased once, he is feisty one Grin

How often do you see the grown up cousin? Are you close?

Atlasive · 18/08/2010 18:47

I like Rufus, and James is OK.

Not particularly keen on Benedict or Patrick.

Which of the previous suggestions do you and your DH like?

PositiveVibes · 18/08/2010 18:55

Patch? Isn't that another dog's name Grin?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 18/08/2010 19:36

Yes - I think that's it though - mine seem to be of the feisty variety, too.

We probably see him once a year-ish - and in sort of contact on facebook. The family's quite close otherwise (lots of them).

I like Patch as a nickname. Maybe I really want a dog?

DH not here to ask at the mo - so I can't answer for all of these, though some have come up:

Dominic - not keen myself - don't know why, not sure about DH
Jude - I have a close friend with a Jude - so no for me
Albert - I had an unpleasant uncle called Albert
Isaac - I used to like it, not so much now. DH probably won't
Samuel - I don't mind this, DH doesn't like it
William - DH's name and another, younger cousin, so too many already
Connor - for me this has 'naughty boy' connotations (apologies to any mums of Connors)
Oliver - far too many for me, though this is DD1's favourite name
Rory - DH doesn't like it
Thomas - I like this quite a lot. Can't remember if DH does or not
Euan - not keen
Peter - I don't like this and I don't think it would sound good with surname

I was wondering about suggestions on previous threads so we don't make all the same ones again?

Thissideofchannel · 18/08/2010 21:31

I like Hamish and Angus.

Benedict will be shortened to Ben, which is a little dull imo.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 18/08/2010 21:51

DH didn't like:

Rollo
Arlo
Cassius
Gabriel
Reuben
Sebastian
Barney
Alistair
Hector

I didn't like:

Rowan
Roland
Miles
Adam
Aaron
Alexander
Dylan
Charles
Conrad

We both liked (but didn't love) Monty. The main problem was that it's fine as a short name, but we're not keen on Montgomery/Montague.

(I think we're really picky.)

OP posts:
polkadottytotty · 18/08/2010 22:08

I don't think you need to avoid Patrick if you both love it, especially if you use a shortened form. Patch is a fab nn.

Benedict is the name we've chosen for bump if it pops out a boy...think I started the thread which might have put you off but it hasn't put me off - definitely Benedict in my opinion!!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 19/08/2010 11:06

It's still a lovely name - to be fair children will be teased for any reason, not just because their name is unusual or it sounds like a rude word. Maybe I haven't ruled it out completely...

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 19/08/2010 17:22

Would you consider Irish versions of James and Patrick (Seamus and Padraig)?

I think you could get away with calling your little DS Hamish even though it's your DS1's mn. I also think you could possibly get away with having another Patrick if the original one is grown up. I have a large extended family and some names are shared by up to four individuals.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 19/08/2010 17:30

The thought had crossed my mind, but although we have an Irish surname and DH's father's family is from Ireland a long time ago, I'd feel a bit of a fraud, if that makes sense? Besides, I can just imagine having to spell Seamus and tell people how to pronounce Padraig repeatedly.

OP posts:
DaydreamDolly · 19/08/2010 17:41

Toby? Like Benedict, but he/his peers would inevitably end up shortening it.

mathanxiety · 19/08/2010 18:01

Jago is James in a roundabout way -- it's a Cornish pronunciation of Diego.
