Help for boys' names still needed

OK - so we had our 20 week scan for DC4 today.

I can say a farewell to Posy, Tess or Betsy and hello to... well that's the question, isn't it?

Been on here asking the same question before - nothing much has changed, I still like Rufus, DH doesn't, DH likes James, I'm putting my foot down.

Patrick is a favourite but there is a cousin who will have the same name including surname (admittedly he's grown up) and I think this is a problem.

Benedict - was a contender until a very recent thread.

Angus we both like - but our cat is called Angus.

Hamish - we both also like - but it's DS's middle name.

I know I've still got until after Christmas - but I'm the sort of person who likes to get these things sorted.

I know so many of you have already made suggestions - and I'm very grateful, I just need to convince DH.

Please help!

I don't think we could get away with Jago - even if DH liked it.

Milo - I think of The Tweenies
Reuben - I think there are quite a few around here - and I htink it'll date.

Dexter - I kind of like but know DH not keen - but I'm put off a bit by Charlotte Church.

What about Rafferty, Mason or Seth?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/08/2010 10:34

Jago's a lovely name - I know quite a few.

What about Morgan? Arthur? (Art?)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/08/2010 10:36

I'm not all that keen on 'surnames' as first names and DH is rather more tradtional - so I'm pretty sure he wouldn't like Rafferty or Mason.

Seth would be tricky (many lispers in family) and our surname begins with 'F'.

Hi there. Love your shortlist - Hamish is great. I empathise with your naming issues - we seemed to have issues with each of our shortlist choices too.

Angus is a great, solid name. This seems to happen more and more - naming a pet your favourtite human name then wanting to use it for your DC. Maybe we should all stick to Fluffy and Bubbles for pet names!

Is renaming the cat not an option?

horsechesnut · 20/08/2010 11:59

Other suggestions - Elliot, Jasper, Casper, Toby?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/08/2010 17:24

The cat is 13 (I named him with previous BF - long before I even thought of having children) - not sure he'd really answer to anything else now. I know he won't be around forever, but I suspect he'll be around for a bit longer - certainly after baby is born, anyway.

horsechesnut I have a particular hatred of the name Elliot after a boy at primary school with this name made my life a misery for a year - so definitely not an option!! It's funny how these associations stick.

I don't mind Jasper, can't see it being to DH's taste. And my aunt has a dog called Casper - maybe that's not so much of a problem really...

And Toby comes up from time to time, sometimes DH likes it sometimes he doesn't. The trouble is DH doesn't like the naming process and is so non-committal about everything and seems to really dislike anything I like. Grrrrr!

How do you pronouce Jago - is it Jay-go? I keep thinking it isn't how you spell it but am I getting confused with a similar name beginning with I (sorry - pg brain)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/08/2010 19:42

Are you thinking of Iago - Shakespearean character from Othello, wasn't he? I think. Can't remember.

Yes - Jago is Jay-go.

OP posts:
preghead · 20/08/2010 21:19

thanks i think that is it - or Inigo possibly. Anyway, I really like Jago and Perrin - but do you think it would be odd for a non-Cornish family to use these? (we do go on holiday there a lot ...)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/08/2010 22:07

Oh yes - forgot about Inigo. I don't know really, if you go there a lot then it's obviously a special place for you and the names will hold a significance for you. Having said that I live in Norfolk and I know a Jago, but I've never once wondered if the family has Cornish roots or not.

And ElephantsAndMiasmas - I always think of Morgan as more of a girl's name. And there are lots of Arthurs here - not sure I'm all that fond of it.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/08/2010 23:05

OK - so here's a turn up - DH and I have just been through one of the ONS lists (for 2008) and he's come up with (and is almost quite enthusiastic about) 'Moss'.

What do you think?

OP posts:
thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/08/2010 23:06

I think it's Scottish for Matthew. Well, I heard it was - don't know for sure.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 21/08/2010 00:10

In the part of Ireland where my parents grew up, where names were rather unusual I always thought, there were a few farmers of the really older generation named Moss, short for Moses. They were old men in their nineties or so back in the 1970s.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 21/08/2010 09:52

Thanks mathanxiety - I shall do some research into it, I think - because I know I will need proof it's a 'proper' name if we decide to go with it! One concern I have is the lispers in the family (not my children, just cousins etc...)

And do you know what? I think we've only managed to get a shortlist of 4!! I know, I nearly fainted. I think that's the best w can hope for - and we'll just try them out when he's born.

If anyone's still listening they are:

Moss
Patrick
Monte
Benedict

I'd still love to hear your thoughts (though it might not change my mind) but just in case there's anything we hadn't thought of (rude words etc). Surname Feeney.

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 21/08/2010 09:55

Just felt the need to post my name next to your name

Moss - dislike
Patrick - ok
Monte - not Montey?
Benedict - gorgeous

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 21/08/2010 10:46

Well - I perfectly understand that!! :)

(I thought Moss was a close to Morrissey as I was going to be allowed to get)

As for Monte - I like Monty - but it seems 'short' for something - whereas I think Monte can stand in its own right. Though it sounds the same - so not sure it matters all that much.

I've had that song going round in my head all day now!!

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 21/08/2010 17:41

I think Moss is really nice.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 21/08/2010 17:52

We asked DD1 (she's 5) and she said she didn't like it - it sounds like 'moth' (not that she'll get the final say, of course!).

OP posts:
dopeydinah · 21/08/2010 18:10

I think your choices are great (and my daughter's called Tess so you've clearly got impeccable taste).
I like Moss but I've got to say that I prefer Benedict.
Patrick's always near the top of my lists til I remember Patrick from school whose personal hygiene was open to question.
Benedict's great, go with Benedict.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout- not to keen on moss how about steven or patrick, morrisseys first and middle names Smile
i see you have patrick on your list!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 21/08/2010 18:41

Believe me, I have toyed with Steven but it's too soon for a Steven revival, I think - Patrick I'm happy with though.

I could have William (as in 'It was really nothing') but is DH's name already. Hmmm.

OP posts:
Jodyray · 21/08/2010 22:21

How about

Owen
Blake
Lucian
Jared
Edward
Reiss
Oscar

Sorry if you already vetoed any of these above Blush

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 22/08/2010 09:06

I LOVE Lucian - but DH vetoed and DH likes Edward - it's OK - I just don't love it. I don't really mind it though. - not too sure abou the others...
