Niamh or Neve?

DD3 is now nearly 48 hours old and we can't agree on a name!

I thought we had decided on Thalia but MIL sent me a text spelling it Italia and pronounced it I-talia and has now put me off!

DD1 is Aimee and DD2 is Caitlin. I like Niamh but DH thinks people will have trouble spelling it so prefers Neve.

What does everyone think? Also do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I always thought Thalia was short for Nathalia. So you could tell MIL it's Nathalia and then see if she can shorten it.

Neve seems bland compared to Niamh and spelling wise, people will have to learn eh?

MuffinsMummy · 18/08/2010 01:35

With the spelling issue that's what I think. People have trouble with both the other DDs names and they are both quite straight forward.

It's driving us both crazy! Even if we agree on a name we can't agree how to spell it!

Oh god, definitely Niamh. People will learn.

sunnydelight · 18/08/2010 02:32

If you want the name Niamh, please spell it properly - it's a gorgous name. Neve just sounds like "I heard this name I like but didn't know how to spell it so I guessed" - bit like the child I met called Shovawn (I kid you not).

jabberwocky · 18/08/2010 02:41

I like it either way. Neve Campbell seems to have done all right with her spelling Wink

mathanxiety · 18/08/2010 05:07

Niamh -- pleeeeeeease.

It's a lovely name with a lovely meaning -- it's an actual word in Irish.

Neve, bleugh.

It's a shame the people you know seem unable to spell or pronounce names that are not unheard-of, but please don't pander to them.

ButtonAzure · 18/08/2010 08:20

I know a girl who's mum spells it Neave as a compromise

ValiumSingleton · 18/08/2010 08:52

Well with say Orla, I would say, just spell it Orla,
But Niamh is now inside the top 100 names in the UK, so I think you should use Niamh. It isn't that hard!, and once you learn off amh together is V then it actually makes more sense to read than Neve. Which one half of your brain says is neev, and the other half says, that doesn't look like any word I recognise so it must be foreign. If you spell it Neve than people might end up saying nevay.

BikeRunSki · 18/08/2010 09:43

Niamh please - it is gettimg popular enough that people will know.

Or move to Ireland!

scottishmummy · 18/08/2010 09:56

some gaelic names spelling you do sometimes have to correct spelling and pronunciation. eg elidih would be pronunced Ay-lee but you wouldnt spell like that

zenoushka · 18/08/2010 09:58

Definitely Niamh

Lougle · 18/08/2010 11:12

Please, please use Niamh. I worked on a neonatal unit once, and the spellings we saw could make you cry.

Honestly, if you don't use the right spelling, don't use the name.

BelligerentGhoul · 18/08/2010 11:13

Niamh is gorgeous. Neve is stupid imho, sorry. Don't like Thalia.

BelligerentGhoul · 18/08/2010 11:14

We wondered about Niamh for dd1 but then decided on Naomi instead. Totally different kind of name but equally pretty to the ear and the eye, we thought.

PotPourri · 18/08/2010 11:15

Neve campbell isn't said 'Niamh' tho. It's said nev - ee (like bevvy). Means snow or summit

Def go for Niamh - that's the correct way. You risk people thinking you're 'fick like' otherwise

MollysChambers · 18/08/2010 11:18

ScottishMummy - Eilidh. Sorry. Had to. Wink

MollysChambers · 18/08/2010 11:19

Potpourri - I thought Neve Campbell pronounced her name "Nev"? See the confusion. Def go for Niamh Grin

NormanNorris · 18/08/2010 11:22

Niamh.

pumperspumpkin · 18/08/2010 12:14

I would go with Niamh over Neve if you wanted that pronounciation, but even more so having read that "Neve Campbell's first name (pronounced nev) is a variation of the pronunciation of her Dutch mother's maiden name." (so nothing to do with the Irish name anyway).

Atlasive · 18/08/2010 12:22

I'd go for Niamh, although for a less well-known name I'd go for the English version in England.

Sinkingfeeling · 18/08/2010 12:38

Niamh - it's pretty popular now in England, so spelling it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

5DollarShake · 18/08/2010 14:23

Agree with pumpetspumpkin - Neve Campbell pronounces it Nev and it's her (Dutch) mother's maiden name. No Irish connection.

Go for Nismh.
