Niamh or Neve?

DD3 is now nearly 48 hours old and we can't agree on a name!

I thought we had decided on Thalia but MIL sent me a text spelling it Italia and pronounced it I-talia and has now put me off!

DD1 is Aimee and DD2 is Caitlin. I like Niamh but DH thinks people will have trouble spelling it so prefers Neve.

What does everyone think? Also do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

That should be Niamh, of course

RoryRaven · 18/08/2010 19:54

Neve is Italian for snow - although I'm not sure how Italian's would pronounce it

bigstripeytiger · 18/08/2010 19:59

Niamh

niamhsmam · 18/08/2010 20:09

Our little girl is called Niamh, live down south and don't have any real spelling issues...go with Niamh its a beautiful name.:)

Rockbird · 18/08/2010 20:09

Niamh, beautiful name and spelling, don't fanny around with it.

lucertola28 · 18/08/2010 20:12

Niamh definitely, it is such a pretty name, its only 5 letters people will learn how to spell it!

Neve doesn't even sound same, it'd probably be pronnounced nev or nev-a (a as in hay)

PaulineCampbellJones · 18/08/2010 20:13

Niamh, gorgous name

blowninonabreeze · 18/08/2010 20:16

I'd have thought that with daughters Aimee and Caitlin, your DH would be used to spelling his DDs names anyway!

Go with Niamh

MuffinsMummy · 19/08/2010 09:57

blowninabreeze - DD1 is DHs DSD (that looks confusing!) but he did choose DD2s name.

It turns out that MIL knows someone called Thalia so must only be getting it wrong because she wants us to call her Tilly. Very grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

We have decided on Niamh Anya so if MIL or anyone else doesn't like it tough :)

Hah hah hah:

sunnydelight : "please spell it properly - it's a gorgous [sic] name"

jabberwocky · 20/08/2010 02:20

This says "Neev"

Bacofoil · 20/08/2010 02:29

Niamh

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 20/08/2010 10:31

Niamh Anya? Not Niamh Áine? Grin

Secondtimelucky · 20/08/2010 12:59

Niamh.

My rule of thumb with Irish names is, how is it most commonly spelled in Ireland. Orla is normally Orla not Orlaith. Niamh is most definitely not Neve.

Aeldredida · 20/08/2010 13:15

Niamh

fifi25 · 20/01/2011 16:13

My 9yr olds called Niamh pronounced Neeve. I loved the name but after 9 year of her constantly being called Ni-am, Nee-am it gets irritating. She has to constantly tell people what her name is and it cant be nice for her. I would think carefully about picking an Irish name. My daughter often says she hates her name fuelled by a teacher who everyday calls her Nee-am and the kids laugh. My younger daughters are Romilly and Connie, nice and easy to pronounce

christabell · 20/01/2011 16:53

I think part of the beauty of the name Niamh is in the spelling - similarly with other gaelic names like Mhairi and Eilidh. It is such a waste to spell it any other way - I know one with an alternative spelling, and I always think it is a shame. Go with Niamh spelling if you are going to use that name, it is definitely becoming well enough known that people will learn quite easily.

Lonnie · 20/01/2011 17:26

Well I would go for Thalia and just teach yoru MIL how to say it but if you are going for Niamh Im with the majority and spell it right Niamh
