Philippa

Nn Pippa?

Is this getting too trendy? It's not here in the states at all. I love all the double P names (Piper, Poppy, etc) and Philippa with Pip or Pippa as a nn seems to have the most staying power.

I love it, but my two adult friends who are called this both really hate it and always have.

LaundryLyne · 08/08/2010 09:58

Philippa is a lovely name and I like Pippa as a nickname :)

CharlieBoo · 08/08/2010 10:16

Dont like it at all, sorry, love Poppy though

RustyBear · 08/08/2010 10:21

I really wanted to call DD Phillippa with Pippa as a nn, but DH said he hated it, then (too late) changed his mind. If we'd ever had another DD, she would have been Phillippa.

MrsC2010 · 08/08/2010 12:13

My sister was almost called Phillippa but my parents decided she would get called Pippa anyway...so christened her that. I love it, but she found that teachers, bosses etc always assumed she was a Phillippa and insisted on trying to call her that!

NiceCuppaT · 08/08/2010 12:37

What's your surname? It's not anything like Bucket, Church, Potts etc us it?? Philippa = Fill up her....
I knew a girl called Philippa who had this problem!!

Raahh · 08/08/2010 12:54

Love it at a lot- it is our choice for dd2- due in October. Imogen as a middle name.
DD1 is already calling my bump pipsqueak!

Kathleen123 · 08/08/2010 13:08

Love it.

jellybeans · 08/08/2010 13:12

love it

meaniebrown · 08/08/2010 16:23

oh man, I hope not--it's my #1 name should next baby be a girl. I'm american too, and love that it's so unusual (here), but isn't some made-up bullshit. Last year there were 18 Philippas born in the states which is nice and reassuring, but it was also mentioned in the book Freakonomics as a potential "hot name" of the next decade.

MrsBadger · 08/08/2010 17:05

love it
dd nearly was

batsforlashes · 08/08/2010 17:07

really like it !

SecurusScriptor · 08/08/2010 17:14

This is a truly strange name for me as it is a bit back to front.

You know how you find folk, particularly teachers) who start families and are stuck for names, so you suggest one and they say "Oh no, I taught/ knew a _ and s/he was a little monster"

Well Philippa is the inverse. I've known quite a few Philippa's who have all been, without exception, lovely, clever, vibrant women/girls but I still loathe the name.

I know, there's something wrong with me but it's within touching distance of Herod for a boy in my opinion!

skidoodly · 08/08/2010 17:17

Nice name, nice nickname

CheerfulYank · 09/08/2010 20:55

Wow, Securus, that's a stong reaction! :)

Glad everyone seems to like it. I worry about it getting popular too, meanie, especially as there was a small child named that in Inception, which apparently everyone saw. But DS is Sam and I know loads with the same name. So far it hasn't bothered me much. Just as long as it's not Jacob or Isabella!

Nicecuppa, our surname is Brick. So, you might be on to something there...

I know Cheerful, but I did say there was something up with me.

On the plus side should you call your daughter Philippa you can expect her to turn out to be a lovely, clever, vibrant girl!Grin

Oldjolyon · 09/08/2010 22:57

Love it.

proudfoot · 09/08/2010 23:41

Not so crazy about the full Philippa - sounds a bit middle aged but it's a decent enough name - but Pippa is adorable.

stressheaderic · 09/08/2010 23:51

I like Phillippa. Reminds me of Georgina, which I also really like.

shockers · 10/08/2010 00:00

I love it... it's my nameSmile.

CheerfulYank · 10/08/2010 01:16

Are you called Pippa, shockers?

Also, I absolutely loved Anne's friend Philippa "Phil" Gordon in the Anne of Green Gables books. So that's a plus. :)

shockers · 10/08/2010 09:02

I get Philippa, Pippa or Pip ( Pip from close friends and family).

Weirdly, I can't remember that character even though I read all the 'Anne' books at least twice!

I'm going to start them again and get acquainted with my namesake. Maybe DD would like me to read them to her. She's spirited and misunderstood....I think she and Anne would get on famouslyGrin.
