Romilly- do you know of any?

I'm not pregnant at the moment but am considering trying for another one. I have always liked the name Romilly for a girl. I was wondering how popular it is at the moment as I prefer to use an unusual name.

Would you mind letting me know if you know any little Romillys and which area of the country you live in?

i dont know any but i have seen one in the park if that counts, age was under 2 yrs obviously dont know the exact age but young toddler
thinking i have heard another one too but cant remember exactly (this one was recently so i remember, cos i noticed and thought great name)
and i am in london (north)
wouldnt say it is very common

Daft question, but how do you pronouce it? Is it Ro-mill-y or Rom-ill-y?

My daughter is a Romily, i got the name from a book i read when i was twelve. Im 45, so the names been around a while. We live in Cornwall. My daughter is the only girl in her school with this name. Everyone i have ever met loves this name and it realy suits her. We tend to call her Rom pom, or Rom Rom.

Interesting Geeky fact, did you know it used to be a boys' name? Welsh painter Augustus John had a son named Romilly.

thereisalight we like all the same names! Do your kids have funny nickames too? Mine are Munkum (evolved from Monkey), and Deagol.

It's on my list, although DH doesn't like it. IS it Emma Thompson's little girl's middle name? (not that that matters, anyway I like her!)

runningrach Yes - she has a Gaia Romilly.

and bundlebelly I guess that happens - if you like a certain type of name you're likely to like others like it. That made sense in my head, not sure it does now I've written it down!

I'm not sure we've got any nns for Romilly - apart from Romilly Poppet (which is what I wanted her mn to be but wasn't allowed) but we've gone to town with her sister for some reason - she's Fancy Pants or The Fondant Fancy (she's called Nancy!!) Joe doesn't have too many that aren't really obvious either. I think that's something for me to work on!

Never heard of it as a girls name - but I used to live near a place called Romiley, a town/village near Stockport.

I don't think you get much reference to that in the South pasthechocs but our Romilly was very nearly born in Sheffield and we got lot of comments abou the town in Greater Manchester...

But the derivation does come from a place name, from Romilly-Sur-Seine in France and then it was used as a surname, then a boys' name (and still is) but more commonly used for girls now.

Can you tell I've had to explain our name choice a lot? :)

If you like it, go for it. I think there will always be comments on the more unusual names, but then who wants to be one of many with the same name at school?

We did have a book called 'what not to name your baby' when pregnant with our first - the type of names to avoid were Adolf (like I would Confused) and those that had unfortunate initials or had 'playground rude' nicknames. Unless Romilly would give an interesting set of initials with your chosen middle name/surname, then why not use it? I like it.

Just looked on the ONS website published today (I think) and in the list of names, Romilly was 982nd and only 33 babies were given this name in 2009.

So not too many about.

Yup my DD2 has Romilly as her middle name! it's a beautiful name and can be shortened to Romy (pronounced roamy)

I'm having such fun with the new 2009 baby name statistics that I've done some research for you Grin There were 33 Romillys born in England and Wales last year, making it the 982nd most popular girl's name!
