Hi

What does everyone think of Senan for a boy. Apparently its irish?

I think a friend has a Senan in the family for a girl - not sure if it;s the same spelling. I was a bit at first, but like it now I'm used to it

meadowlarks · 03/08/2010 12:11

How do you pronounce it?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/08/2010 12:14

If it's pronounced Sennen, that's a beach near Land's End. It's not unknown for people to be conceived on it named after it, in Cornwall at least.

If it's pronounced see-nun (as in Kenan) though, that's not so nice.

BunnyLebowski · 03/08/2010 12:14

I bloody love it.

A distant relation has just called his wee boy Senan and to me it's like the Holy Grail of Irish boy's names. Strong and masculine with a great story behind it. Individual without being deliberately 'out there' and great on a little boy and a man.

Oh and did I mention I love it??

BunnyLebowski · 03/08/2010 12:15

Nowt to do with Cornwall or Kenan Elephants.

Here ya go

lucybrad · 03/08/2010 12:17

I love it too, and so unusual but still a 'proper' name. We also like Seren (welsh girls name) for a girl.

I think my search for a boys name may be over!

Elephants, it is pronounced Sennen liked the beach. It is Irish but not very common, if you particularly want to use an Irish name, I think there are lots of nicer ones and if you have no Irish background, then it's a kind of peculiar name to use tbh. It is not common in Ireland, I only ever knew one.

lucybrad · 03/08/2010 12:21

I like the way it sounds, more than the fact its irish - although my grandfather was half irish, that doesnt really matter to me. Otherwise I would have to use welsh names, because we are welsh.

EAM my friend is cornish!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/08/2010 12:42

There seems to be a real thing at the moment for Cornish families to use "proper Cornish" names - place names too. There are lots of Tristan, Sennen, Zennor, Lamorna, Lowenna, Morwenna, Morgan etc babies around. Think it's quite nice

Tillyscoutsmum · 03/08/2010 12:45

I know a Sennen (named after the Cornish cove) I think its sweet

cheesesarnie · 03/08/2010 12:46

lots of sennans here(cornwall) and pirans.lovely names and great that cornish names are aking a come back but every other child is sennon or piran atm!

meadowlarks · 03/08/2010 12:46

Ooh that is nice. Use it! According to Wikipedia it means "little old wise man", which is so cute.

jennymac · 03/08/2010 12:52

We called our ds Senan - he is 2.5 now. At the time of looking for names I hadn't heard of it before but my dh knew it and was keen. We had a girl first and by the time ds was born I was converted to the name and was our first choice. It is pronounced exactly as it is spelt so hope he won't have too much trouble in school. It is a very old irish name and very common around Co. Clare just not so in the North of Ireland where we live. Typically though since we chose it, I have heard of three other people (generally relatives of friends) who have picked the name for their sons since!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/08/2010 12:53

Not so many Hayles or St Austells around though funnily enough cheesesarnie...

LaundryLyne · 03/08/2010 13:11

Reminds me of senna I'm afraid!

cheesesarnie · 03/08/2010 13:14

nor delaboles or budes

Sazisi · 03/08/2010 13:18

My nephew is Senan, I've come across it a couple of times in Ireland but it's not overly popular.
It's an old version of Shannon - as in the river - and means wise I think

pixiestix · 03/08/2010 14:44

Ah Elephants, your first post has reminded me of many a naughty night on Sennen beach! [wistful]
Great name OP, go for it.

ValiumSingleton · 03/08/2010 15:19

I know of a few of these, all under three and I don't really like it. It reminds me of that natural laxative product. I don't remember this name growing up, but I think people are finding new Irish names, or maybe finding old ones iykwim.

ValiumSingleton · 03/08/2010 15:22

Bunny , so it's said senawn.. ?
(that's how I read it with fada on the second a).

PaulineCampbellJones · 03/08/2010 15:53

How do you pronounce it? Lovely name.

seeker · 03/08/2010 15:55

How on earth can you say it's a lovely neam if you don't know how it's pronounced??????

jennymac · 03/08/2010 16:33

It is pronounced Sen-an

Tortoise · 03/08/2010 16:40

Can't believe i am the 1st to say this but it made me think of semen!
