*amelia

When I said I want a cute name, it obviously wpuld age with the child. Cute when shes little, but suitable when shes a grown up.

No need to be so picky!!

It's chavvy, it's made up and it will date. Sorry.

rachxx · 30/07/2010 21:10

Can you explain to me the term 'chavvy' and what exactly you meant by it? I understand alot of people describe 'common' names as 'chavvy' did you mean this? Is it common wheer you live then? I thought it was very old and traditional greek name. I guess all names were 'made up' at one pont, and this was 'made up' a number of years ago now, in the same way my name 'rachel' was.

I think all the other names on your list are nice - Carmen and Dulcie I especially like, Carmella is also lovely, I'm less keen on Ava and Scarlett as they are very 'of the moment' but there's nothing horribly wrong with them. I wouldn't worry if they're not everyone's cup of tea.

Can I just say I am amazed that people you know have such a problem with Elizabeth? It seems such an uncontroversial name; how rude of them to say 'at least it's not your first name' as if it was Gertrude or something! I'm surprised you find Catherine frumpy too, for me it's one of those names that could suit any age, but I suppose it depends what age Catherines we've met.

Also with 'all names were made up'... well, I think usually they come from a meaning, like Rachel means ewe-lamb, whereas Tiana seems to have been put together just for the sound. Up to you whether or not you care, of course. I think there are far worse names a girl could have than Tiana - at least it's quite simple - but I personally would rather a name with more history iyswim? (there are a lot of dodgy baby name sites out there so I am sceptical of the Greek origin)

Thankyou lilmagill, i have been thinking more about carmen and dulcie, so at least you don't think they are hideous.

I was born in the eighties, and alot of parents used Elizabeth as a middle name, after their parents (my gran for example) it seems. Therefore amongst alot of people my age group, it feels boring, or 'another elizabeth' type of thing.

I think maybe for mothers now, they look at it as a 'classic' name, but I feel strongly against elizabeth! Two of my cousins have the same middle name as me, and we have all agreed that if it wasn't for the family connection, then we would be very annoyed with it!

Most of the catherines I have met have probably made the name 'tarnished' for me (except for my Auntie) if you get what I mean.

What about Tania?

BertieBasset · 30/07/2010 23:41

If you like the name you go for it!

For what it's worth I have an Amelia and read on here the other day that it is "common in both senses of the word"

I love it, my DH loves it, I know no others regardless of the posters who know hundreds, and it suits our little girl.

Go with what you like, it's a pretty name! And I would spell it Tiana if you would like that pronounciation

LaundryLyne · 30/07/2010 23:44

Yes Tania is nice, or Talia (if pronounced Tallya, not Tarlya).

Dummyhunter · 31/07/2010 06:13

Tiana/Tianna was in our top 3 - I love it - she could be Tia or Anna if she wanted to shorten when she was older depending on her personality. At the time I got lots of negitivity about it but I do still love it. IF YOU LIKE IT USE IT. By the way it does mean Princess but I kind of like that it has a nice meaning. It does not remind me of Jordons child!

rachxx · 31/07/2010 09:05

thanks

dummyhunter what did you go for in the end? x

Sarah! lol yes I know it is very different to Tianna but it just suited her It wasn't even on our shortlist!

zozzle · 01/08/2010 11:33

Elizabeth is lovely!! Love all the nn possibilities

Prefer Tia to Tiana - not overly keen on either but they are ok

Carmen nice

Acanthus · 04/08/2010 15:54

chavvy means common, yes

Poohbearsmom · 04/08/2010 16:57

I like it! And i think both nn are lovely i do love Ava though and Carmen is lovely but im afraid Carmen Electria popped straight into my head with the name but im sure none of your dd's friends will have ever heard of her but could it be a possible thing for your OH's mates to take the mick outa him for? Im probably over thinking it!
I do like Elizabeth though cause i used to look after the sweetest little girl called it and also i want to secondary school (small one) with 3 Catherines! All called Cathy though...

Poohbearsmom · 04/08/2010 16:59

ivykaty44 · 04/08/2010 17:03
