If Peter had a brother, he would be called...

Following on from the "Peter" thread, what is the first name that springs to mind?

My shortlisted names have been rejected by DH and he hasn't made any suggestions of his own (it's too early apparently). The short list included:
Robert
Nicholas
Alastair
Tobias/Toby
Rupert

We are looking for something traditional but not too popular. I am being fussy though and whilst I like

Andrew, I don't like Andy
Ditto Christopher / Chris
Matthew / Matt

Many thanks!

Charlie don't worry I wouldn't go for Tim. I think it's a bit wet. Can't use James though as that is DH's name. Interestingly, he has never liked being a James.

lulu didn't I mention my DDs flopsy and mopsy?

Jonathan

It's your dh's middle name, so family connection, but not first name, so no confusion. It's also traditional like Peter, and not too popular. It can be shortened (Jon, Jonny, Jonty, Jonno) but doesn't have to be.

And also I am very biased because it's my ds's name. But I also love Peter, and would have considered that as a name if it hadn't been for an unpopular peter in dh's family.

SpiderWilliam · 25/07/2010 19:02

Somuch I completely agree with you. I have always loved Jonathan since I was at school. I can't persuade DH though. It's so frustrating.

I'm going to go Narnia and suggest Edmund.

nickschick · 25/07/2010 19:05

Reuben

Xavier.

I am in a vile mood so probably not being v helpful .

SoMuchToBits · 25/07/2010 19:05

Aaaawwww - and my Jonathan is such a Jonathan! The name really suits him, and if he had had a brother (but we only had the one) I would have really wanted a Peter (which might have been allowed for a second child).

Does your dh not like his middle name either? I can see not wanting James (although I like the name) as it might be confusing, but what's not to like about Jonathan?

SoMuchToBits · 25/07/2010 19:05

Oooh, yes, Edmund!

violetsmile · 25/07/2010 19:13

Joseph or Alexander

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 25/07/2010 19:21

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 25/07/2010 19:25

BelligerentGhoul · 25/07/2010 19:30

Edmund is lovely.

I suggested Robin earlier - what do you think Spider?

Thanks for all your suggestions. Can't really respond to them all but:

DH not really come up with anything specific about Jonathan except that his Dad is John, and sometimes his Mum calls his Dad Jonathan as a pet name. DH has a good relationship with his parents so it shouldn't really be a show stopper, but there you go!

Robin - I much prefer Robert probably because of a bully of a CEO in a previous job. I also put it in a similar category to Tim.

There are a bit of a glut of Oscars round here so would avoid that.

Dominic I quite like, but Dh doesn't

Benedict is on the list of possible second names as it references my family name.

You have given me lots of ideas to take back to DH, so will see what he says.

Thank-you.

Actually Alexander is good too. (biased as is ds's middle name) but think it's a good name, can shorten to Alex (still good imo) or Al, Lex, Sandy etc.

And goes well with Peter.
