I heard a little girl called this at the weekend.

I thought it was really cute but is it a name in it's own right or a NN for something else?

Not planning on using it, I'm having a boy. Just thoght it was quite unusual and pretty.

I know an Effie who is a Euphoria.

She is about 22 though.

Easywriter · 20/07/2010 20:52

Beautiful name!

(No idea what it's short for tho')

Phoenix · 20/07/2010 20:55

There was an Effie in Heartbreak High (aussie soap from years ago)

CuppaTeaJanice · 20/07/2010 20:57

Effie in Skins was short for Elizabeth.

zinnia · 20/07/2010 20:57

I believe it's Greek - have known a couple of Effie's and they both are/were Greek. This could explain the Heartbreak High one too, what with their being a lot of Greek-descended people in Australia.

Think it must be short for something though.

cece · 20/07/2010 20:59

Sounds a bit like a swear word to me, if you don't say it carefully!

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2010 21:03

Don't know what it's short for, but I imagine Effie to be a scullery maid.

Bechka · 20/07/2010 21:07

I think it's Euphemia, and was last popular in England in Victorian times. But don't quote me on that!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 20/07/2010 21:07

I had a great aunt Effie. I love the name. Not sure what hers was short for, will have to find out.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 20/07/2010 21:07

How do you pronounce Euphemia?

bigstripeytiger · 20/07/2010 21:08

Im pretty sure its usually Euphemia.

bigstripeytiger · 20/07/2010 21:09

Ewe-fee-me-a (thats how the one I know prounounces it)

MrsJohnDeere · 20/07/2010 21:58

I have a friend called Effie (in her 30s). Hers is a nn for Grace-Stella (still can't really see how she gets Effie from that ).

takethatlady · 20/07/2010 21:59

I remember Heartbreak High! Leah from Home and Away was in it

Like Effie, hate Euphemia

Pasiphae · 21/07/2010 11:36

I like Effie, but don't like Euphemia much.
Is Elspeth pushing it a bit?
or Elfrida?

dixiechick1975 · 21/07/2010 11:46

Eppie short for Hepzibah as an alternative?

Effie is too swear worl like for me - makes me think of the slang phrase effing and jeffing.

My great grandmother (died c1941, so prob born in 1850s) was Euphemia, known as Effie.

I don't like it particularly.

Lily311 · 21/07/2010 12:44

My sister in-law is called Eferata- we call her Effie. She is half Nigerian-half Hungarian. Beautiful name.

Apphia · 21/07/2010 18:31

I really like Effie.

We're planning on calling our DD Ophelia with Effie as a nickname. Bit of a jump but think we could just about get away with it

Gleeb · 21/07/2010 18:40

Ooh, Ophelia to Effie is good. Nice work Apphia.

ReasonableDoubt · 21/07/2010 18:57

Effie is very sweet.

DandyDan · 22/07/2010 15:01

Effie is lovely, but there is Skins Effie to think of. Effie in Skins was an Elizabeth, but generally Effie (or Eppie - as in Silas Marner) comes from Euphemia, meaning Fair Speech.
