Sorry, just don't think its a good name for a boy, girl yes, boy no.

valiumSingleton · 18/07/2010 15:04

Alexander

SagacityNell · 18/07/2010 15:05

I don't like it as a boys name sorry.

Opens him up for HUGE bullying without much thought at all.

valiumSingleton · 18/07/2010 15:05

I have a relative called Jem. It's a boys name. Obviously a short form of Jeremy, but Jem is like chris or alex or sam. Could be short for Jeremy or Jemima.

Mahraih · 18/07/2010 15:24

I'd be tempted to use something with a consontant so it flows better.

Like Terrance or ... Robert. Or something with more thought behind it.

NotHereThanks · 18/07/2010 15:27

Jem, far far too feminine.

ima?

The only Jem I know is male - in his 30s.

CapitalText · 18/07/2010 19:09

Is Jem going to be short for something?

00000000000000 · 18/07/2010 19:11

jem is a shortening of jeremy. it's not really a name in it's own right.

alexander would be good-jeremy alexander

jeremy george

but jem? jem stone?

violethill · 18/07/2010 19:11

Jem is definitely a male name, but IME it's always an abbreviation, never a name in its own right.

CapitalText · 18/07/2010 19:16

Your surname isn't Beadle, is it?

MadameGazelle · 18/07/2010 19:28

I love it - it's the name of one of the characters in one of my favourite books; Jem FInch in To Kill a Mockingbird. As others have said I like Jem Alexander and Jem Isaac is also lovely.

But it doesn't matter if his name was Jeremy, themildmanneredjanitor; he was known as Jem; that's the point I was trying to make . OP - both of my children have names that are actually abbreviations of longer names, because I wanted their name to be their name, and more importantly to be something that couldn't be shortened or given a nick name. Personally I don't understand it when people give their children long first names then immediately call them by the shortened version or a nickname - why bother giving them the longer name in the first place if you love Jem go for it; as I said before, I love it

How is Jem any different to Max, Sam, Jim all abbreviations and names in their own right. I find Jem a cool name - In my baby name book it says

Jem - diminutive of Jeremiah or James.

CapitalText · 18/07/2010 21:06

Jeremiah is great, much prefer it to Jeremy.

CapitalText · 18/07/2010 21:07

lucybrad, I think it's because Jem sounds as if it could be short for Jemima/Jemma.

Adair · 18/07/2010 21:09

Cem (pronounced Jem) is a Turkish name too.

For middle names, have you got anything that has sentimental value? We used family names. And for ds, who has an unusual first name, his second name is a bit more usual (though still 'chav' apparently, despite being named after a v posh ancestor ).

neolara · 18/07/2010 21:11

Don't listen to them all. Jem is an absolutely fantastic name for a boy. (My ds is Jem - not short for anything.)
