Hi, Im looking for a middle name to go with the first name Jem. Our surname is two syllables starting with a B

Any ideas?

How about William.

I am of agreement that a consonant is better. I'm thinking along the lines that J(Vowel)B could lead to a horrible nickname.

Never thought of Jem, not a choice I would make but it's individual and not horrible.

I love Jem either on its own or as a shortening of Jeremiah (not Jeremy!). Your best bet would be a three to four syllable name, I think.

How about:
Tobias
Xavier
Ossian
Phineas
Sebastian
Alexander

Jem's a cool name but I do agree with other posters that it might be good to give him a longer, more adaptable name to fall back on when he's older.

Jem differs from Sam, Jim etc in that they're far more familiar and don't have a slightly feminine sound, plus most Sams are Samuel and most Jims are James/Jamie.

Anyway, middle names.... Not an easy one - which is obviously why you've posted!

A name beginning with C would work well with the soft sound of Jem but would give you JCB as initials.

Alexander is nice but JAB not great initials.

How about:

Jem Duncan B__
Jem Dominic B__
Jem Kingsley B__
Jem Roscoe B__
Jem Raphael B__

Good luck! Please let us know what you decide

But what a ridiculous assumption to make themildmanneredjanitor ; that someone might get to a certain age and think their name is unbearably twee - your name is your name and the vast majority of people learn to cope with it. He might get to 24 and find the longer version of his name unbearably twee and change it by Deed Poll - you can't predict these things and I find it a bit silly that people feel the need to assign their child 2 names in case they grow out of one of them .

ClenchedBottom · 19/07/2010 10:23

Perhaps some people don't want to have to 'learn to cope with' their name, MadameGazelle?
You are of course entitled to your opinion, but having seen with a family member (not one of my DC) the extent to which he disliked his name and was desperate to change it, I think that a little room for flexibility is a good thing.

OP, FWIW I love Jem too.

Top choice for me for next DS is Jerome Gregory. (Already have a William, known for now as Billy, and as I am in the "give a child/adult options on their name" camp, I would want to do the same with a Jem. Prefer Jerome to Jeremy or James, hence Jerome. Gregory is DB name, Billy has my late dad's name for a MN).

I know a couple of Jems, just Jem. I love it as a small person name but IMHO it might lack gravitas in an adult. Others will of course disagree, that's what makes the world such a fun place.... .

you see just HOW strongly I feel about it....

shitforbrains · 19/07/2010 10:36

I do actually work with a man called Jem Stone.
Seriously.

valiumSingleton · 19/07/2010 13:56

Jollister, I like Jerome Gregory. Are you going to call him Jem? FWIW, I don't think it's feminine at all, I have a relative called Jem and it just seems like a man's name to me.

I think names starting with El such as Elliot or Elija or Elias are far more feminine, but obviously that's entirely subjective.

I love Billy too. I used family names for my son too. I'm very glad. No regrets.

Anyway. Nice choices IMO, unusual now but still classics, just quirky classics.

Tasala · 19/07/2010 14:27

I love the name Jeremy but it got slated by all my family when I suggested it as a name for my DS. Anyway think Jeremy James is nice or Jeremy Adam.

lucybrad · 19/07/2010 18:23

thanks for all the positive Jem comments. Unfortunatley I already have an Alexander as that seems the ideal middle name. I would definately just have it as Jem though , as i like it short and to the point! Dont know if boy or girls yet so will have too wait 3 weks for the scan!

I have just come across your thread and found it quite interesting. I know it is an old post but felt I needed to add my bit. I have a boy (now 20 yr old) he is called Jem, our surname is also two syllable beginning with "B" we gave him the middle name Nathan. We have had only positive comments about his name, it would be interesting to know if you went with it x

Agustarella · 05/05/2018 16:33

Rio? :)

Sophronia · 05/05/2018 19:12

I prefer Jem short for James.

Jem Christopher
Jem Andrew
Jem Edward
Jem Arthur
Jem Lawrence
Jem Nicholas
Jem Daniel
Jem Lewis
Jem Nathaniel
Jem Oliver
Jem Patrick
Jem Lucas
Jem Frederick
Jem Thomas
Jem Robert
Jem Theodore

bridgetreilly · 05/05/2018 20:08

Jem Charles
Jem Henry
Jem William
Jem David
Jem Thomas

I like it, OP, though personally I'd give him James or Jeremy on the birth certificate. But it's fine not to.
