Any clues on thyroid results please?

Ive had blood tests. I've previously had 'borderline' thyroid issues (no records or numbers that I can see or have been told).
My results are back and I have a TSH level of 6 and TSH receptor of 0.3ul.
I've got a few symptoms. Tired, cold ALL the time, thinning hair/eyebrows. Dry skin, brain fog.
When I was borderline before I was just told to watch and wait. Does anyone think I'll be treated this time or left to retest again in a few months?
Many thanks.

With those symptoms I'd definitely ask the dr and push for treatment

Thank you. Looks like I'm going to have to be a but pushy with it. Do you have any clue what the TSH receptor means?

I was borderline like you. I’m on 25mg of levothyroxin a day. You are exempt for prescription charges for this. If your doc prescribes this ask for the certificate.

chatenoire · 22/05/2024 08:51

You're hypo! You need levorthyroxine

BloodyAdultDC · 22/05/2024 08:52

NICE recommendation is to treat the symptoms. You also have bloods to back it up now, so you should definitely request medication with regular blood tests and reviews.

Maneattraction · 22/05/2024 08:57

Try creating an account at Health unlocked. They have a thyroid board and the ladies on that are so helpful. They can give you some really great advice about all things thyroid

@BloodyAdultDC my consultant will only treat on blood results and refuses to treat on symptoms which is very frustrating because I have symptoms that indicate I need higher medication. I’ve had a quick Google but would you know exactly where I could find that information?

I don't think I've ever had my TSH receptor tested so have t the foggiest! Sorry

SendARavenToRiverRun · 22/05/2024 09:02

Thanks everyone. Very helpful. I'll wait a day or two to see if tje docs contact me (currently found the results on my GP app). If not I'll be asking for treatment. I buy a prepayment cert as I have asthma so not sure where I stand with prescription payments.

@SendARavenToRiverRun you will have to pay for your other meds but this is free.

Most GPs won't prescribe levothyroxine until you are at 10 TSH. I was 'subclinical' for years until at 9.5 and with me pushing saying how symptomatic I was, they relented and put me on it. Kept saying 'come back in a years time.'

jennylamb1 · 22/05/2024 09:09

You don't have to pay for any prescriptions of you are on levothyroxine. You apply for a medical exemption card.

It's horrendous how inconsistent it is. I had. Random blood test which showed 7.77 and they were acting like it was a medical emergency to get me on levothyroxine, which I'm grateful for, it should be standard across the board

So, a quick update. My thyroid was first found to be borderline in 2015. My last bloods showed it was at 5.2 and its gone up to 6 now.
I rang the doctors to chase it up. The receptionist said it was 'stable' and 'borderline' (obviously not knowing I'd seen the results). She said no action would be taken. I asked for a call back. The doctor said the same as the receptionist. He asked for my symptoms. I mentioned my thinning hair/eyebrows but this is impossible as it only happens at levels of TSH 60. Not 6.
They won't and don't treat under levels of 10. He said my antibodies are negative as well. Ao no issues there.
He's asked me to have bloods taken for B12 and Vit D. So I've booked them in. Maybe its all in my mind!
Thanks for all the advice so far.

It's not in your mind
Mine was about 7. Something but they treated it as my T4 was dropping
I've had to fight for it all the way
Started me on 25mcg levo and refused to increase it until my haematology consultant rang them and asked if they were treating hashimotos via homeopathy now (I'm 5ft 10!)

Now on 100mcg levo and changed doctors

Thank you. I feel really mardy about it tbh. I haven't got the energy at the moment for the inevitable fight. I understand that 6 is definitely borderline, but I've slowly felt worse as the years have gone by.
How do you feel now being on 100? Hopefully a massive improvement for you.

Just to add. I have no clue on T4 or T3 just my TSH level.

Honestly I don't feel much different but it was such a gradual slope down that I think I got used to it
I do have other health issues that make me fatigued too

No. If you are on levothyroxine you won't have to pay for any prescriptions. I've been on it for years and all of my prescriptions have been free ever since, no matter what the drug or the reason.

chatenoire · 24/05/2024 06:54

You might have to see another GP/surgery. Here are my results and I take 100mg of levorthyroxine

*Pathology Investigations

Thyroid function test
Serum TSH level 0.707 miu/L [0.35 - 4.94]
