Anyone made a lifestyle overhaul to deal with AI issues?

I have a wonky thyroid - tired Hmm losing hair, anxious, depression, bloated...did I mention tired?

Conventional medicine says there's something wrong with you but we won't treat you (yet) sub clinical hypothyroidism

Everything I read about more 'natural' and integrative methods says you need to cut out a lot of different foods, get a decent night's sleep, reduce stress and do yoga Wink + supplements and probiotics etc.

So, in a long winded way to go about it...has anyone done this before? Anyone who would like to support each other to do this?

TIA

I take the linseeds to help with sluggish digestion. Also drink lots of water.

EachandEveryone · 09/09/2018 12:05

If you have a t k maxx this is £3 I’m going to give them a try as they recommend salt baths

WerewolfNumber1 · 09/09/2018 14:46

@starbrightlight thanks that makes sense.

epicclusterfuck · 09/09/2018 16:14

Thanks werewolf I didn't know that about folic acid so will try that.

MrsJonesAndMe · 09/09/2018 18:30

I like a good Epsom salts soak, but hate baths Hmm Usually throw it in the bottom of the bath, close the plug hole and shower with my feet in it!

That’s smart - I love baths but can’t get out safely without help anymore, so don’t get them often, might try the shower trick :)

Thank you for this thread! I have rheumatoid arthritis. I went on a strict gluten free diet earlier this year following the paleo method. Also massively cut down on sugar and dairy. I lost 2 stone - the weight just fell off me - and it helped with the joints, I think, as I’ve done pretty well on minimal ness this year. Going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment but that said I’ve also fallen off the diet. So this is an excellent reminder. I would love to be part of a mutual support group!

hilbobaggins · 09/09/2018 20:34

Minimal ness = minimal meds!

I take a really good fish oil supplement, magnesium, vit D and one of those gut bacteria sachets every day.

Just had a big piece of chocolate cake but that shall be my last for some time thanks to the reminder from this thread...

MrsJonesAndMe · 10/09/2018 06:58

Welcome baggins I still have too much sugar. Blush

WerewolfNumber1 · 10/09/2018 07:08

@hilbobaggins - what gut bacteria thing would you recommend? I’ve looked at them but been a bit baffled.

I have two autoimmune diseases (pernicious anaemia and lupus) and am thinking of trialling gluten free, minimal dairy, minimal sugar, to see if it helps - some people think it helps to reduce inflammation I think.

hilbobaggins · 10/09/2018 09:21

Hi Werewolf - I use Bimuno, which was recommended to me.

I really recommend the gluten free diet. As I say I do think it has helped and if you were anything like me (breadaholic) you’ll almost certainly lose weight. There does seem to be a link to inflammation. I found Rob Wolf’s book, The Paleo Solution, really informative (and surprisingly funny) about the whys and wherefores of the gluten/inflammation link. He also provides a bunch of non-gluten recipes which have been a lifesaver as there’s only a certain number of chicken salads I can eat...Smile

WerewolfNumber1 · 10/09/2018 10:43

Thanks I will look at that!

MrsJonesAndMe · 11/09/2018 20:39

How are you all doing?

I'm still GF and eating things like soup/cottage pie, nuts etc Trying to cut down the hot choc and GF brownie habit though Blush

Just started GF - stocked up on lots of GF food. I’m thinking of trying it for a month, do you think that would be long enough to tell if it’s helpful?

Also trying to cut back on Diet Coke, I’ve been so tired the last few years that I’ve become dependant on constant caffeine!

sausageandrashers · 12/09/2018 11:06

Hello! I've started a lifestyle and diet change this week.
I've been looking into inflammatory and anti inflammatory foods and am trying to cut out the inflammatory ones and eat more anti inflammatory ones. I've cut out gluten and dairy for a start (which has cut out all the good stuff) and am taking out processed foods from my diet too and have upped fruit, veg and antioxidant foods. I've only been doing it since Sunday and it's hard and I miss bad food and feel hungry all the time. Hoping the cravings and habit of eating will pass soon.

MrsJonesAndMe · 12/09/2018 11:24

I'm aiming to keep going to Christmas (as a minimum, but have a feeling the Gluten may have to go for good) but it's my birthday soon and we're going away and and Blush

Going to focus on improving my diet and lifestyle and bake myself a GF birthday cake.

sausage I'm sure you'll get over the worst of it soon. werewold I had a "fat" coke habit but hardly ever touch the stuff now.

Ive gone decaf but have the very odd coke. Im waiting for my celiac bloods to come back. I am having really painful thighs at rhe moment like someone has punched me. Thats as well as the joint pain. I blame it on the hypothroidism but my doctors not interested.

Im going to try gf but i have an issue with runs. Last night i was gf in pizza express and literally had to run to the bathroom when i got home. Same when i had gf pasta ans tomatoes the other day anyone know what that cpuld be? Im like that when i eat quorn as well.

I dont know where to start tbh. Ive been off sick for three months so i need to have a plan and start something this month for when i go back.

MrsJonesAndMe · 12/09/2018 21:22

Look at paleo or AIP recipes online (I do Pinterest a lot) and avoid the GF stuff as much as possible.

Hey all, disappeared for a bit as took a minging dose of tonsillitis. Only back to the land of the living today really.
Starting my juicing tomorrow so will report back with results.
Had looked into paleo and think I'll probably end up going this way after the juicing(planning for 30days initially).
This is a lovely thread to have to support eachother ☺ it is also a sad reminder of how little support we get from the medical professionals for autoimmune disease 😕
I feel bad saying that as a HCP myself but it is largely true.
@eachandeveryone
Just a wee note for you re the coeliac test if you don't already know: some people can be negative for the antibodies but still coeliac(can't remember the % off the top of my head, sorry). A diagnosis is confirmed through a biopsy of the GI tract.
I was tested for coeliac and it was negative, I meant to push for biopsy but I was fighting for so many other tests at that time, it went by the wayside.

MrsJonesAndMe · 13/09/2018 12:42

Sorry to hear you've been unwell. I found that documentary really interesting, but with 2 primary aged children and a busy lifestyle, I don't think it would be a good idea. Good luck with it!

AuntieO · 14/09/2018 13:51

Thankyou ☺
Luckily I've only one teen left at home so not too bad.
Day one ok so far but haven't managed to give up tea/coffee yet.

hilbobaggins · 14/09/2018 14:58

Well done to everyone doing these dietary changes. It’s hard but I really do think there’s a payoff.

sausage being hungry all the time is not going to work, I’ve had that on diets before and it is utterly miserable. Are you sure you’re getting enough protein? I’m doing paleo and I eat a ton of fish, meat and eggs along with the veg. You should feel pleasantly full (not bloated) after meals and the food should sustain you.

I think 2 months of doing proper GF should be enough to at least tell whethet or not you feel better in some regard. But it’s worth really going for it so you can really tell whether or not it’s working. When I started doing paleo in January I decided that if I was going to bother at all I had to commit 100% for 2 months otherwise what was the point. Admittedly I was pretty desperate. So I cut out all grains, booze, sugar and almost all dairy. Did not substitute with GF foods as the books suggested a lot of that stuff is crap (and definitely isn’t paleo). I just did large plates of protein and veg, including for breakfast. Then I fell off the wagon later in the summer because... well, holidays Smile but I’m getting into it again now.

It’s really good have others on board with this, bloody boring doing it by yourself! Smile

MrsJonesAndMe · 14/09/2018 20:16

It is hard work when you're alone!

I've got lunch and tea sorted, but not eating breakfast, so may make little crustless mini quiches for the week ahead.

Are you feeling hungry Auntie?

OP posts:
AuntieO · 14/09/2018 20:45

No, surprisingly I'm not! Very strange feeling!

MrsJonesAndMe · 15/09/2018 11:36

Interesting! What have you been juicing and have you got a juicer or food processor? nosey Grin Blush
