Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations of Australian made films or tv series please, old or new, but particularly based in Melbourne so we can get more excited about our upcoming holiday!

Obviously I realise it might be tricky for me to access them, but don't let that stop you! I'll pull out all the stops to find them ☺️

Thanks!

Definitely Offspring - I have just finished rewatching with my 18yr old daughter, she loved it and I forgot how brilliant it is. Filmed in Fitzroy, Melbourne really captures Melbourne beautifully 🤩

-Offspring (Melbourne)

  • 5 bedrooms (Melbourne) Some non child friendly scenes.
  • The Last Anniversary (NSW). (Is brilliant)
  • Deadloch - Is sweary. NOT KID FRIENDLY (Tassie & NT).
  • Bump (Melbourne), was hugely popular.
  • 'The Castle'. (Melbourne)
  • 'The Dish' - rural NSW
  • A place to call home (NSW, period drama)
  • RFDS (it's been rebooted but there's many seasons from the 80's). SA
  • Hallmark film 'A Melbourne Match'.
  • Ride like a Girl (Melbourne/Vic)
  • Darby & Joan (QLD)
  • Seachange (Vic)
  • The Dressmaker (Vic).
  • Nine perfect strangers (Byron Bay)
  • Miss Fisher's Murder mysteries (NSW, period drama)
-Artful Dodger (NSW, period drama) -Doctor Doctor (NSW, I think) -The Twelve (WA) (some nit kud friendly scenes)

It just depends on what you want to see! I can find many more, but not sure you'll be able to access them (I'm Australian).

Older films
I love the film Malcolm. Storm Boy is also a lovely film

I had forgotten about Malcom. What a great funny film that was.

Storm Boy- I’m still traumatised 40 years after watching this. My kids are puzzled as to why I get sad when I see pelicans.

CypressGrove · 25/04/2026 03:33

Deadloch
A Moody Christmas (yes its a Christmas theme but really funny at any time of the year)
The Moodys (sequel to above)
Upper Middle Bogan
BMX Bandits (one of Nicole Kidmans first movies)

Really difficult to choose from all these wonderful sounding options but we've started with Offspring. Enjoying it so far!

Its already been mentioned but Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is fabulous. Set in 1920s Melbourne. Hugo Johnstone Burt from £10 Poms is in it - and the gorgeous Nathan Page. Decent storylines across all 3 series

My dd adores Little Lunch currently

I was excited to hear from STV that a third series of Janet King (Sydney, not Melbourne) is now available. I don't live in Scotland, but am able to use their streaming platform.

IcedPurple · 29/04/2026 21:35

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the legendary Kath & Kim.

Comedy set in suburban Melbourne, made in the early to mid 00s. It's centered around some rather bizarre female characters and it's hilarious. I've watched it any number of times and never tire of it. It's available on NF.

Offspring is also very good, at least up to season 4. Wanted, a series about two women on the run, is also excellent if a tad implausible much of the time. It's set in Sydney and a number of other locations rather than Melbourne however. It was on NF but I'm not sure if they're still showing it.

Fake news. I just watched the first episode of series 3 and realised about two minutes from the end that I'd seen it before.

Children’s show but still great for the adults who watched it and read the book as children:
Round the Twist

HoraceCope · 02/05/2026 19:57

Contrarymary30 · 02/05/2026 19:58
