Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations of Australian made films or tv series please, old or new, but particularly based in Melbourne so we can get more excited about our upcoming holiday!

Obviously I realise it might be tricky for me to access them, but don't let that stop you! I'll pull out all the stops to find them ☺️

Thanks!

I really enjoyed ‘Fisk’, a comedy series on Netflix about a woman who is a lawyer. I think it’s set in Melbourne. Similarly, Colin from Accounts.
More seriously are the Jack Irish series with Guy Pearce, about a former criminal lawyer turned debt collector. They are set mostly in Fitzroy in Melbourne. I lived in North Fitzroy for a while.

Off the top of my head, other films and series I’ve enjoyed:
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Muriel’s Wedding
Mystery Road - crime series BBC 4

Hammers Over The Anvil. It's a bit of a heartbreaker though.

PenelopeAsks · 22/04/2026 18:33

Well I was going to say Kath and Kim because it is brilliant, but you have seen that.
Fisk is definitely on a par and you might see a familiar face (and bottom) too.

Wasn't The Thorn Birds set in Australia? And the old film and then the longer TV series of A Town Like Alice.

And Walkabout with a young Jenny Agutter.

pjani · 22/04/2026 21:01

Came here also to suggest Offspring, really enjoyed the first four seasons, about a doctor living in inner city Melbourne trying to find love, great characters amongst friends and family etc.

AmusedSeal · 22/04/2026 21:03

The Letdown- comedy series on Netflix about new mums. It's brilliant and similar humour to Fisk (also excellent). Think it's Melbourne.

ItsABarbecueShowdown · 22/04/2026 21:06

Deadloch on Prime is brilliant.

Last stop before larrimar. Now that’s Australia.

GentleSheep · 22/04/2026 21:10

Currently watching Deadloch on prime, excellent
