I’m trying to follow it from the U.K. where I’m living this year and it seems massively political and divisive, is that what it’s like over there or is that just being started by the media?

Jason Clare should be our PM.

Jason Clare should be our PM.

He has said he had no interest in becoming PM but the contenders all say that at some point.

He’s a good person for Minister for Education.

That clip of him - he’s impressive.

I know - at the election he made it very clear that he wanted interested in Albos role.

He is so relatable but not in a Tony Abbot way (🤮). One day perhaps.

I love Briggs and that video. I hope it resonates with the target audience.

I’m starting to feel deeply depressed about the whole thing. Yesterday DS told me MIL voted early and voted no, and I felt like I could cry.

MiniBossFromAus · 08/10/2023 02:38

Proud to say my 19yr old took himself off (with a bunch of friends) to vote yesterday morning.

AFAIK they all voted yes.

Gremlinsateit · 08/10/2023 02:46

I am at the Parramatta event and it is such a lovely atmosphere. I wish we could spread it across the country.

Malcolm Turnbull is here and mentioned that Liberals are allowed to vote yes ;)

Gremlinsateit · 08/10/2023 03:35

The crowd has just been singing along with “From little things, big things grow”. Chills.

I love this from the very excellent Senator Briggs

Anyone going to an event today? I might head to Parramatta.

I am a staunch yes supporter but I have mixed feelings about that video. I'm not sure ridiculing young white women is actually going to make the difference we hope for.

Gremlinsateit · 08/10/2023 03:53

@CallItLoneliness oh good point, but I see it as in line with these women’s other work - a pair of comic geniuses :)

CallItLoneliness · 08/10/2023 04:13

@Gremlinsateit I'm not familiar with the women, which might be the problem here :)

StartupRepair · 08/10/2023 04:46

The Paramatta event sounds wonderful. I still have hope.

Cloudflare · 08/10/2023 07:13

@Gremlinsateit 😂Love the Contact Tracys.

CallItLoneliness · 08/10/2023 07:56

@Gremlinsateit this is a very dangerous rabbit hole when I have work to get done 😂

One question I've seen asked (but not answered) is, what happens when parliament chooses not to listen to the recommendations of The Voice? Are they accused of being racist? If so, will parliament feel compelled to do whatever is being recommended to avoid being criticised as racist? I'm a Yes voter, but I still don't really understand why we need Constitutional change when the government already has the power to legislate to create an Indigenous Voice. Yes, the next government could change that legislation, but so could subsequent governments if the Voice is successful as the government of the day decides the finer details about how it all works.

Gremlinsateit · 08/10/2023 09:10

@theveryhungrybum that is really an excellent question. I agree, we would not need constitutional change to establish a Voice IF successive governments would do the right thing. Similar bodies have been established in the past, but then abolished/sidelined with a change of government. The idea of the referendum is that the body has to exist and be allowed to speak. Later governments can defund it, stack it, whatever they fancy, but they can’t get rid of it altogether.

It’s a similar idea as the same sex marriage survey. That too could just have been done by Parliament, but having the “vote” made it harder for a conservative Parliament to undo it later.

I had similar feelings when I watched it. I don’t know if it’s just preaching to the converted and potentially alienating everyone else.

Turquioseblue · 08/10/2023 10:56

Two indigenous friends of mine are voting No - they said it's too divisive. I am still voting Yes!

StartupRepair · 08/10/2023 11:52

Putting it in the constitution is a huge symbolic recognition that First Nations people were here first. The constitution is nothing sacred. Hardly fit for purpose as written in 1901. The original writers expected it would be updated.
