And if so, how much do you think? Thinking of making more to fundraise for charity event. There are things I could improve on with it so would do that before selling too.

Please also give me suggestions for improvement

I love the feathers, and have quite a few peacock themed things. I don't love the body though, but the feathers are lovely.

Time40 · 30/08/2023 21:18

The head and neck are good, and the overall shape is nice, but the body is letting it down - it's too pale, and a strange texture; it looks like a brain! I also think the tail needs a few more feathers; it looks a bit sparse. If you did a version that I liked, I'd buy it. I'd pay about £20 for it.

Sunflowersinthewind · 30/08/2023 21:18

I love the idea of making themed vases and bowls. I have never made bowls or things like that. I only really do it for fun and so I tend to only make animals or birds because I like them.

I agree with the neck comments, it needs to be shorter and thicker towards the body.

What a refreshing thread. My friends always lie to me and say the things I make are great (which I love them for) but feedback like this is much better

I make and sell lots of things at markets and the things that sell well are items which are functional but look pretty as well. You'd attract a lot of interest but I think people would be put off by the size.

Yes I struggled with the big feathers, I need to work on how to make wings.

It is actually the biggest thing I have made. I normally do much smaller things, so this is an interesting point thank you

No. Unlucky plus the feathers are dust magnets and it looks rather startled.

Gnomegnomegnome · 30/08/2023 21:21

I like it, I like its expression! But I wouldn’t buy it, sorry!

Katmai · 30/08/2023 21:21

SalviaDivinorum · 30/08/2023 21:12

No - in our family peacock feathers are considered very unlucky. It's quite a common superstition in the UK

Is it? I've never heard of it at all.

Abitwobbley · 30/08/2023 21:25

I like it! I have a background in art (degree) and I can’t see anything wrong with it OP! I love peacocky decor and am not superstitious about ridiculous things either.
Well done on your creation!

pictoosh · 30/08/2023 21:32

I've heard of peacock feathers being 'unlucky' but it's bollocks obviously. I wonder where the notion came from?

pictoosh · 30/08/2023 21:39

There's a couple of explanations. One is that the feather markings resemble the 'evil eye' of Lillith, a female demon. Another is the implication of vanity, the implication being embedded in the feathers and brought into your home.
So yep. Bollocks.

pictoosh · 30/08/2023 21:42

Personally, I think peacock feathers are really pretty and I have a couple in a vase on a shelf.

ActDottie · 30/08/2023 21:51

I can appreciate its beauty but no I would t buy it. Not really my thing.

lemonyaid · 30/08/2023 21:54

Could you make broaches with peacocks on?

TicTacNicNak · 30/08/2023 21:59

No, sorry. I don't like any sort of ornament or decorative thing (very minimalist) and I was also brought up to believe peacock feathers are unlucky in the house.

Sunflowersinthewind · 30/08/2023 22:18

Maybe a full on peacock is just too much and as it appears unlucky. Love the idea of peocock themed vases/brooches etc. Might start practising/looking for inspiration.

Would people buy smaller figurines like the pigeon or another animal? That is more what I am used to making but need to know if pointless (for selling for charity purposes). I honestly have made more things than just birds beginning with the letter P though! This one was for a friend who likes pigeons.

Yoghurtpotsatdawn · 01/09/2023 07:53

I think smaller is better. I much prefer the pigeon. If you are working around an animal theme, what about cats, dogs, rabbits and other pets? Have you looked on Pinterest for ideas? I’d go for small and cute or something like knickknack plates/dishes on a theme - flowers, animal markings etc.

If you have an idea who is likely to be your potential customer - something you could imagine them choosing. If you’re likely to have lots of families, something that kids might like - little clay mouse in a matchbox bed, spider in a matchbox (in time for Halloween ). Keep looking at and for different ideas. But yes I’d definitely go for smaller .

Saz12 · 08/10/2023 10:33

Very difficult to sell handmade things whose only function is to be decorative (other than at Christmas!) at charity craft fair: people have a higher expectation of how decorative it is to want to display as an ornament.

Could you sell as a craft kit? Have one finished on display and sell nicely-packaged materials with really clear instructions & photographs as a kit? Ive no idea how hard it would be for a novice to make one, so possibly not realistic!

Sunflowersinthewind · 08/10/2023 11:16

Hi, I have started making more Christmas things actually. Like christmas trees that you can put tealights in and have progressed to mini houseplants. People are a bit brutal on here so might need to hoick up my big girl pants before I show a photo

Axolotlrulestheworld · 08/10/2023 11:34

I loved the peacock! I would definitely buy it if it wasn't too much money. I guess you will have to calculate your costs and time making things to pick a price point. Craft fairs and Christmas fairs would be good places to see what similar things are going for. Good luck x

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 13/10/2023 17:03

Well, it's not my cup of tea, but peacock lovers would be tripping over themselves to get it!
Phallic? Tbh, I don't see that, I just see the long slender neck of a peacock!
It's good, though.

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 13/10/2023 17:05

If looking to make it useful, could you make the body into a box? Like a little jewellery box with lid, possibly a little latch near the tail so it's not obvious?

SalviaDivinorum · 13/10/2023 18:03

pictoosh · 30/08/2023 21:39

You may consider it "bollocks" but it will knock out the proportion of the OP's potential market who don't consider it "bollocks" of whom there will be quite a few.

@lemonyaid

i think they'd be a bit heavy!
