Pet portraits - brutally honest opinions needed

I have little confidence and have been selling pet portraits for £35 each. Buyers always say they’re happy with them but my lack of confidence tells me they’re just being nice

Would love to do it as more of a business rather than a hobby.

im thick skinned, please be honest

The one with a collar on is a different league to the other two. I'd have that one but not the others.

thats interesting as the one with the collar is on A3 paper, the larger size allowed me to get a lot more detail in - it also took a lot longer 😂

Wow 🤩
They are honestly great

maddy68 · 03/01/2023 19:04

They are lovely. But it depends on if you have captured ""the look" of the dog

SkylightSkylight · 03/01/2023 19:04

@Brokkoli

Can you post the photos you did them from??

their expressions are SO human, I'd just like to see what they were like in the originals.

if they're actual drawings, you're totally underselling yourself!!

Brokkoli · 03/01/2023 19:07

Thanks everyone, they are hand drawn with charcoal. I’m not good enough with computers to do digital art 😂 hence why I haven’t managed to sort a website out yet. DH is going to make me one at some point.

When I was 17 I was thrown out of A-Level art as I wasn’t good enough … I think that has always stuck with me and I’m finding it hard to move on from that Knock back I suppose.

The dog with the collar on is A3 sized (and was done as a gift) so not sure what I’d price those sizes at. The other two are A4 sized.

Still unsure on pricing, I used to sell them for £25 and was working at a loss once I started buying good paper.

These A4 ones took me about 8 hours each (split over 2 days)

The big one took about a week! But I did do it over Christmas so broken down I’d say about 12 hours in total

I would love for you to do two for me. My dog passed in April, It would be amazing to have pictures of him as a pup and one as an adult. I have a Pug who I rescued 2 months ago, one of him would be great. Please let me know if you would be able to do them. You have a lot of talent.

They are amazing. My SIL paid £250 for her pets portrait.

You are undercharging by a huge amount.
Hourly rate x number of hours

They are great. Do you do cats?😁

Sore see subject at the minute 😂 I took one on thinking I could do it but it’s really not going too well so I think I’m going to have to tell them I’m not ready for cats yet … I did warn them before hand that I’d never done cats before 😂 I can show you the current state of it if you’re interested

Honestly I clicked in the hope to see something tragic. But they're stunning. £35 seems very low. How long do they take you? Go on Etsy for an idea of prices.

Sennenandolive · 03/01/2023 19:14

They are fabulous! But please don’t undercharge. I do pencil drawing portraits and charge £80-£120 depending on subject and that’s on the cheaper end of the scale!

Wallabyone · 03/01/2023 19:15

Wow! They are so like the photos; you really are very good xx

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/01/2023 19:16

These are awesome. They are like the photos, but better.

Brokkoli · 03/01/2023 19:17

I tried to set up an Etsy but I can’t work out how to use it :-(

If anyone needs proof that they’re not computer generated images, watch me trying to work out how to use Etsy 😂

Go on, show us the cat

I bet it's not as bad as you think!

Gandalfsthong · 03/01/2023 19:18

These are beautiful! Definitely worth more than £35, they must take hours?

Howyoualldoworkme · 03/01/2023 19:18

I draw portraits for leisure but have friends who draw/paint pets for a living and yours are stunningly good!
And you are definitely undercharging. I think £80-£100 unframed depending on size would still be a good price.
Be very proud of your talent 🙂

NancyPickford · 03/01/2023 19:19

You are SERIOUSLY under-charging!

Would love to see it - our 'little' boy is divine and DD2 got an amusing 'painting' of him produced for Christmas this year. It was not cheap she said...

Rachaelrachael · 03/01/2023 19:20

These are stunning! You're very talented

thats interesting as the one with the collar is on A3 paper, the larger size allowed me to get a lot more detail in - it also took a lot longer 😂

Having seen the photos, the two smaller ones also had a lot less detail on the photographic images so you have done a good job of capturing the detail present. I'd say the A3 picture could easily go for £500.

ditherydotty · 03/01/2023 19:22

Beautiful and very talented

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 03/01/2023 19:23

First one is outstanding. The other two are good but not in the same league -- but I suspected and your later post confirmed that that's because you were working from worse photos. You are definitely undercharging.

NCTDN · 03/01/2023 19:23

Wow! Just wow!
