Pet portraits - brutally honest opinions needed

I have little confidence and have been selling pet portraits for £35 each. Buyers always say they’re happy with them but my lack of confidence tells me they’re just being nice

Would love to do it as more of a business rather than a hobby.

im thick skinned, please be honest

So beautiful! Charge more for sure!

Unicorntastic · 03/01/2023 18:41

They are really very good, if you don’t already sell them framed and mounted as well to help push the price up.

StrawberryFizz27 · 03/01/2023 18:41

They are amazing. Do you have an Etsy shop?

SchoolNightWine · 03/01/2023 18:41

You're very talented, and way underpriced!
I paid about £150 for a pet portrait on a canvas block last year.

Thisislifefornow · 03/01/2023 18:42

Fantastic, don't give up.

Emdubz · 03/01/2023 18:42

Amazing artwork!

mrsdolittle · 03/01/2023 18:44

Utterly gorgeous OP. You have serious talent and you need to charge A LOT more

Folkishgal · 03/01/2023 18:44

I'm a professional illustrator (books, branding etc.. ) and I'm floored by your talent! They're absolutely gorgeous, deffs keep it up (and stop undercharging!)

SlipperSchlepper · 03/01/2023 18:45

They're amazing! 👏🏻

caramac04 · 03/01/2023 18:46

You are really talented OP. I was expecting some not very good pics tbh but I’m blown away by how good you are.
You’re undercharging considering the materials and your skilled time unless you’re knocking them out in ten minutes which I can’t believe is possible.

VioletLemon · 03/01/2023 18:46

These are skilled,I really like your drawing style. If anything I'd choose a slightly lighter colour of paper as it will show your fine shading and the delicacy of your highlighting. You're undercharging massively. I'd expect to pay at least £100 for that quality of work on an A3 paper, A4 probably £65.

Suzi888 · 03/01/2023 18:46

Lovely work, very impressive OP.

TiredButAlive · 03/01/2023 18:46

They are brilliant! I've seen artwork in our local gallery that is nowhere near as good as yours and people expect £200+ . I suspect you could charge more.

Iamclearlyamug · 03/01/2023 18:48

Very good indeed. I have a friend who is a pet portrait artist and her smallest portraits (about 10x8) are about £240, up to about £650 for her really big ones.

She's fully booked until the summer and still doesn't make much money. You're very talented but don't underestimate how little profit you make once you've bought really good quality materials and paid yourself for your time (even the small portraits take 10-12 hours)

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/01/2023 18:50

Crikey OP they're amazing! Well done you x

krustykittens · 03/01/2023 18:50

They are very good and you are undercharging! A friend of mine did a small water colour and ink sketch of my DH's bulldog and charged £90. It is wonderful and really catches her personality so worth every penny as far as we are concerned. He loves it and it has pride of place in his office (he clearly loves the dog the most).

Fladdermus · 03/01/2023 18:51

If they are original, hand drawn drawings then you are seriously undercharging. No wonder people paying £35 are happy. I've bought quite a few original pictures from hobbyists and normally pay around £200 - £300. I have one done by a retired professional and paid £600 for that, 10 years ago.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 03/01/2023 18:32

Unless there's something you're not telling us, like the first one is actually supposed to be a Border Terrier, then you are seriously talented and very much underselling yourself.

clairelip · 03/01/2023 18:51

Stunning pictures, I'm sure if you looked on Etsy/eBay for similar you will find you could charge a lot more

bloodywhitecat · 03/01/2023 18:56

You are seriously undercharging. I paid £180 for this one of my lad, yours are just as good

The portraits are great, but if you want to make a business out of it, you really need to look at your costs

  • how long to do a portrait?
  • cost of materials
  • don't forget admin costs, like time to source or collect materials, time to email or meet customers, advertising (even if you use free advertising somewhere, there could be a time cost)
Viviennemary · 03/01/2023 18:58

These are very good indeed. I agree you are undercharging.

Wishimaywishimight · 03/01/2023 19:01

Wow! They are amazing, you are really talented!

I would love to have a talent like that.

Was126orbustandmaybebust · 03/01/2023 19:01

They are great. Do you do cats?😁

artyarty · 03/01/2023 19:01

I'm a pet portrait artist. These are amazing and you should fdefinitely charge more! Have a look on YouTube for Bonny Snowdon, I think she has a video on there about pricing and increasing prices but still getting clients. You're too good not to pursue this 😊
