Welcome sewists new and old.
Before the break we were losing all self control. Fabric buying is a separate hobby. No judgement here. Pop in and share your wins and woes but most of all, please tell me what the heck to do with any current sewing project because I have no idea what i'm doing. Thankyouplease. Smile

StoryNanny1 - the best bet is to put your overlocker model number into youtube and you'll usually find some videos. For example this video on Singer's youtube channel seems ok showing the steps for the one my mam has

Singer Overlock S14-78 Threading Guide: 4 Thread Overlock

Good plan, I’ll have a go

Wildernesstips · 15/08/2023 06:30

I am in an absolute temper with button holes. Not only did it take me 20 minutes to realise that the button lever was the black one not the grey one, but my machine has decided to get stuck doing the top bartack. So I have half button holes. The trouble is, they are almost too tiny to unpick.

NutellaEllaElla · 15/08/2023 06:51

God what a nightmare, how many are half done? I've unpicked one button hole before and think that might just be my max...

Three, because in my wisdom, I felt sure that the second and third ones would work - I mean, what was I even thinking!!!

NutellaEllaElla · 15/08/2023 10:14

See this is my fear when the button holes are almost the last thing to do, you've got such a high risk with a near complete garment

This has happened a few times with my one step buttonholer. I’ve gone back to my old machine and it’s 4 step one.

Brefugee · 15/08/2023 10:38

Growing up my mum never had a buttonhole function, so she only made clothes that she could adapt, or used the hammer-in press studs. I still do that because i loathe button holes (even though my Innovis A150 does nice ones)

For coats I'd probably try to do the ones that are like welt pocket openings and not make an actual button hole. (or hand sew them with proper button hole twist, i learnt the stitch at school, like a more complicated fancy blanket stitch)

I've found getting a razor and 'shaving' the stitches of the button hole are usually the easiest way to unpick them - do it from the back.

CrimsonAlligator · 15/08/2023 10:51

I’m still traumatised by the button holes my previous machine made, so conceal my buttonholes wherever I can. Not a fan of sewing on buttons either 😬

123ZYX · 15/08/2023 11:47

I've only just started risking button holes on my machine - they're still no where near perfect. I feel much more in control sewing them by hand

Wildernesstips · 15/08/2023 17:16

Thanks for making me feel better about my buttonholes. I am going for another attempt tonight.

On this garment, it is only the bodice of the dress (Deer & Doe Myosotis) that is complete so far. I might change the buttonhole type to a standard rectangle - maybe it was the D shape that it didn't like.

GnomeDePlume · 15/08/2023 18:22

It was the buttonholes which finally made me ditch my Singer.

It would either start the buttonhole 0.5cm beyond where it was told to start (and do a snail trail of stitches up to the position) or head back down 0.5cm from where it had been told to start. You didn't know which it would do.

My pfaff does okay buttonholes where they are wanted. For my next make I am going to use gimp threads to make the buttonholes look more robust.

How on earth did they get called gimp threads? The mind boggles.

Wildernesstips · 15/08/2023 19:03

Success with a regular rectangular buttonhole - hurrah. I'm hoping the unpicked bits won't show once its been washed.

123ZYX · 15/08/2023 19:08

It's all hidden behind the button when it's done up anyway (or at least that's what I tell myself)

Sewingdufus · 15/08/2023 21:02

Buttonholes frighten more - one of the reasons I tend to stick to stretch fabrics!

PickAChew · 15/08/2023 22:18

My janome makes quite nice buttonholes but I've yet to go there with my pfaff.

NutellaEllaElla · 16/08/2023 10:04

I've been looking for an inperson fashion draping course for ages and i've found one, for beginners, when I happen to already have time booked off work.

It is expensive and i'd need a hotel. Should I do it?? It's soon. I was planning on making more stuff during this time off anyway.

OP posts:
Brefugee · 16/08/2023 10:27

if you can afford it, do it. It's something I've always wanted to try but i can't justify the expense because i really don't sew enough for myself these days

InMySpareTime · 16/08/2023 10:39

Do it

Do it

Do it

(I'm an enabler!)

NutellaEllaElla · 16/08/2023 10:40

Grin i'll make an enquiry

OP posts:
SleepingisanArt · 16/08/2023 13:06

Oh yes - do it! If you are already on annual leave it would be rude not to 🤣🤣

I'm not sewing. I'm in a grump as my 20 year old washing machine decided to stop working 10 days ago and the engineer will be here this afternoon. Minimal washing has been done (essentials). It's like living in the 'olden days' - why is it so difficult to wring out the water by hand?! To ensure it is fixed I have chosen its replacement.... And after he's fixed it I'm going to drink a glass of posh prosecco and make an elephant.....

Storynanny1 · 16/08/2023 20:28

Where is the course? Sounds good

Wildernesstips · 16/08/2023 21:38

@NutellaEllaElla go for it!
