Sling workshop

Hello,

I am not sure where to put this message so if I am in the wrong place I apologise and hope someone will point me in the right direction.

Months and months ago, I read about someone who had attended a sling workshop, where they make slings out of just simple pieces of cloth.
Can anyone tell me where I can find more information on these workshops, if they exist, or can someone give me more information on making wrap/slings/etc out of lengths of fabric (dd 8 months weight) which requires no sewing (can't sew).

Many thanks
Shell

I made one up out of a length of folded double ikea muslin type fabric, then typed in a search for instructions for back slings(or front)or something like that and watched loads before getting the idea...et voila! it worked fine, though I think Id probably go for a slightly narrower fabric if I did it again. Was very straight forward.

TisTheSeasonToBeSolo · 20/12/2008 22:37

that should have said searched You Tube for instructions btw.

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 20/12/2008 22:43

I make my own wraps. 5 meters of jersey, cut into three down the length (3 x 5m) and you don't have to do anything with them. If you look around you can get jersey for £3 so it's £15 for three and you can sell the other two or go in with friends. I was using my slings until she was two and started climbing out!

Try Mamatoto for good DIY instructions (choose make a carrier, top left).
Also The Babywearer has good forums and advice if you want more info.
I think the site you were thinking of though is Slingmeet

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 20/12/2008 22:58

I used Mamatoto the first time I made my wraps, I can never remember the name of the site or I would have said before. They're very good.

ChirpyGrinch · 20/12/2008 23:10

I love mamtoto, have it bookmarked or I would lose it, can never rememebr name either!

ShellySara · 21/12/2008 11:22

Thanks all, I have those sites marked too, but struggled with the dimensions of the fabrics. They are fantastic with loads to look at.

Thanks ChirpyGrinchfor the slingmeet link - I think that was the site I was looking for. I just cant seem to get the wraps right!

Take care

Shelly, I've made loads of slings over the last two or so years as friends ask me to make theirs now too, so if there's anything I can do to help or anything you need to know, feel free to ask. I've always made slings for pretty much cost price (I charge a little extra because I'm left with two slings I need to get rid of and it stops me being too much out of pocket) and said I'm more interested in helping people babywear than in selling slings, I'm not a business and couldn't afford to be, so I'm happy to teach people about positioning and wrapping or making their own wraps.

ShellySara · 22/12/2008 20:38

Thanks Tinsel! Whereabouts are you? I have seem all kinds of positions, but am mainly interested in hip and back carries (hip cause thats where I normally carry her, and back cause it could be interesting!) I have some beautiful pieces of fabric but dont want to cut unless I am absolutely certain (dont want to ruin or waste). Any advice would by gratefully received.

Thanks
Shelly

Just seen you're in the Midlands! I'm in Birmingham so I'm more than happy to meet up with you, I have the perfect demonstration aid (Tink) but I'm not capable anymore!

I have loads of spare ones I can show you and help you with before you decide what to do about your own. Just to let you into a secret, it's the no-sew fabrics that work the best anyway

ShellySara · 23/12/2008 21:57

Fantastic, maybe we could meet up in the New Year. I've been meaning to come across to Birmingham for ages.

I think I can cat you, so will try and send a private message to arrange more.

Merry Christmas and take care

Sure, obviously it will be around the baby (she's been trying to come for the last 9 weeks and is due 1/2) but it would be good. I can receive CAT but can't send it.

Due doesn't mean much with me lol, both my previous babies have been early (20 and 31 weeks). I'm 35 weeks tomorrow and been holding on for the last ten weeks. I don't think even the hospital thought I'd go this far, especially as it's longer than I've done before.

ChirpyGrinch · 27/12/2008 15:23

Hi Shelley, I am from Waricks and will be there over new year if that is near you? Not sure which side of midlands you are though!
(Keep your legs crossed TInsel!)

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 28/12/2008 01:38

Maybe we should arrange our own sling meet in the New Year?

I'm happy for her to come now, I'd gladly go into labour now and not worry about it stopping! It's draining living like this, I'd rather she was out now.

ShellySara · 28/12/2008 14:26

Hello, I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas.

Chirpy, I am north of Birmingham in Burton.

Wow Tinsel, baby will be here soon then. Ooooh, am all excited for you.

I think that would be a meet would be a good idea, we will need to take a lead from Tinsel though on timings.

Hey, any ideas on how to keep a newlyu climbing baby from facebutting the floor after climbing over your legs?? Apart from velcroing hands and feet to one spot!!!

Take care
xx

ChirpyGrinch · 28/12/2008 20:01

Oh, am not goint ot be abel to get that far as am south of brimingham and would only have a few hours to spare

Oh, and re: the headbutting baby, no idea, DD2 still goes headfirst off everything at 14 months. we were hoping she'd learn that it doesn't work as well, but nothing yet.....

ChrismumMiaow · 28/12/2008 20:06

We need to arrange a birmingham sling meet (I couldn't make the last slingmeet one and it seemed hardly anyone turned up).

I sell slings and can demo wraps and mei-tais (and do hire too). I love talking about them and have a 11mo DS to do demos with

Tink - seems everything's going really well with this one - she's staying in!

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 29/12/2008 22:04

Three weeks today at the most! I think the only thing keeping her in now is that she has IUGR and my body doesn't realise I've gone so long.

I went to a sling meet in Birmingham last year and it didn't really go that well I think. I think our own one could work out better though.

Chairmum, I can't believe that he's 11 months old, it doesn't seem that long ago since the picnic.

ShellySara · 30/12/2008 11:06

Now do we wait til after Tinsel has popped so we can all see the new addition???

OP posts:
TinselBaublesMistletoe · 30/12/2008 11:20

I think waiting a bit more than three weeks would be good anyway to give us time to plan it!

mummypig · 31/12/2008 11:45

Hi can I revive this thread and ask if you make slings out of jersey, do you follow mamatoto's no sew instuctions or do you hem/overlock the edges?

I hope everything is going well for Tinsel

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 31/12/2008 17:54

I make mine no sew - apart from a button at the front for a marker. I think the fabrics that don't need sewing are the ones that work best anway.

mummypig · 31/12/2008 23:01

Thanks. No sew sounds good to me.
