Is it normal to feel like you need a stiff drink after an afternoon's crafting with your children?

Cos making some xmas decorations with my 4 yo DD has brought me to the verge of a nervous breakdown

I mean in theory it's a lovely, enjoyable, seasonal activity together, why do I now feel like throttling someone!

I absolutely hate kids crafts. I'd need a stiff drink to get me to start.

SleighGirl · 12/12/2008 17:53

Did you not realise you're supposed to have mulled wine whilst you enjoy festive crafts it is essential for child's survival.

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 12/12/2008 17:53

are they nice though? and did DD have a nice time?

WhereTheWiseMenWent · 12/12/2008 17:54

Great in theory living hell in practice.

I have also been making decorations with 4 yo ds this afternoon.

Such a lovely image in my head, sooooo not like that in reality.

pagwatch · 12/12/2008 17:55

it isn't normal at all.
the urge for alcohol usually happens during and not after.

lljkk · 12/12/2008 17:56

Another brandy-swigger before we even start. (Ok, not really, but I really must get into the habit).

Actually the urge to make the decorations with a 4 year old is not normal.

The drink is perfectly normal.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 12/12/2008 17:58

have you seen this?

Sputnik · 12/12/2008 17:59

I clearly have a lot to learn still about parenting!

noonki · 12/12/2008 17:59

Oh thank god I am normal.

I almost left the house when we trying to make playdough decorations and some crayon butterflies (I put the crayons in a container with a hole in it ) so spent twenty minutes scraping the bottom of the oven.

Oh and 18 month olds and glitter is a bad mix.

Sputnik · 12/12/2008 18:02

They're not up yet, we're waiting for the glitter glue to dry.

Thanks for that link LedodgyChristmasjumper, I am crying now (with laughter, in a therapeutic way)

Poor you sputnik, have an enormous glass of wine. We tried to make Christmas cards with DD yesterday, was suprised that she didn't enjoy it considering I was holding her hand in a death grip to stop her printing paint everywhere!

TheTwelveDAISYOfChristmas · 12/12/2008 18:34

Oh, don't talk to me about glitter glue; we made cards on Sunday and DD ate so much of the stuff that she had a sparkly nappy on Monday and Tuesday

She had a massive tantrum when it was taken away from her and after she had calmed down started licking the patterns off DS's carefully crafted cards.....cue tantrums from him over that and my nervous breakdown.

....and it was only 10.30 so I couldn't even have a drink!!

nkf · 12/12/2008 18:34

Hell, yes. Gin and tonic time.

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 12/12/2008 18:37

I have just opened a bottle of wine after enduring taking her to Cubs in rush hour - 30 minutes of singing Rudolf the cocking reindeer is enough to drive anyone to the sauce, never mind crafts

pointydog · 12/12/2008 18:44

Perfectly normal. Same as baking with the under 6s. It is a lovely rosy idea but a pain in teh arse in practice.

starbear · 12/12/2008 19:35

LedodgyChristmasjumper, sides hurt and tears down my face laughing. I'm not very I.T type person you must post this on other threads especially the one with Social engineering in the title. Baking emmm! I don't think my mate will let me bake with her son again? She blind and I'm sure all she could hear was me telling off her son.

ImDreamingOfANortyXmas · 12/12/2008 19:37

Ooohhh I must be a bad mummy......I leave nursery to do all the messy things with DD

starbear · 12/12/2008 19:46

yes, if I could only afford to send him there more often!! Have any of you let them decorate a room yet? Should I or shouldn't I??? We had tears on Saturday when he picked the WRONG present for granny! To my shame I changed it and bribed him with chocolate before the tears would stop. I'm an evil Mummy!

noonki · 12/12/2008 19:57

ledogdy that was hilarious - love the 'hide the cocopops'

Luckily I didn't attempt to involve 18 month old DS in the crafting, I'm not totally insane.

Anyway, things looking better now after a glass of wine
