Bought some DK wool today to make ds3 a jumper, thinking I would have a DK pattern at home. I do not, or at least, not in his size.

I have spent last hour googling, trying to find an online pattern, but all I can find are patterns for adults, fancy patterns for children or links to ebay to buy patterns.

Trying to rope dh into helping me search but thought it would be easier to ask here.

These are the requirements:

Pattern must be for DK wool.

Ds3 is 5 years old so looking for something that covers his age, preferably 5-6, I think 24" chest.

A plain design or a cable design, but nothing too fancy as the wool is multicoloured.

Pattern must be downloadable and free.

Thanks is you can help. My memberhsip of Ravelry can't come soon enough!

Gosh MatNanPlus, for a non-knitter, that is amazing research! I liked the anchors aweigh pattern but I think that is definitely not DK having checked your link.

twoluvlykids, that link just took me to Ravelry - no pattern I could see.

Marina, you will have to forgive the ignorance of someone from the sticks.

I am going to do a trial of oogsfrog's second pattern to see what it looks like.

what about this one?

miamla · 27/10/2008 21:35

i've found another one www.bluegarter.org/category/patterns/

miamla · 27/10/2008 21:37

Dk and aran are not the same weight at all. If you used DK with an aran pattern it would be very loose and likely knit up a different size.
24" chest size would be too small for a 5-6yo. Probably 26-28" more suitable, unless he is very small for his age(knit for a 26" which probably has a finished size of 28"). My Dd is 22months and I'm knitting her stuff in a 24" chest and she's petite and wont be in that size long(she measures up at 20" which is small for her age-would expect her to be 21-22").

DumbledoresGirl · 27/10/2008 21:44

Thanks Solos, I knew that but was in denial about it! Thanks also re sizes. I discovered I needed a 26" chest just after writing my post.

Miamla, at the risk of offending, I don't like the first two patterns but am intrigued by the third one. But again, it is Ravelry, and they do not allow non-members to see their patterns. Any way you could copy it and email me it?

How about a drops design pattern www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/kategori_oversikt.php they have loads of free patterns for adults and children.

Just select the childrens category and enter anything between 20 to 22 in the gauge box. Most DK yarns are in this range of stitches per 4inches/10cms. There were a lot of different patterns some with cables, stripes (you can always ignore the colour changes), fairisle etc.

If you see one you like just click on the flag that's highlighted and it takes you to the pattern. Most terms are the same knitting wise between uk/usa patterns but here is a site with a few conversion charts www.wendyswoolies.com/ukus-knitting-translator/

Your ball band may already give you a rough guide to sts per 10cms or could always knit up a small swatch of your yarn... cast on 20/22 stitches knit 10 or so rows and measure it to see how many fit in 10cms?

Hope you find something here

miamla · 27/10/2008 21:54

dumble, you've got mail!

solo · 27/10/2008 22:30

I've put a pic of a pattern I have here on my profile. It's a girls pattern, but knitted plain, would suit a boy. Any good?

DumbledoresGirl · 27/10/2008 22:31

Thanks Miamla

Fikelly, my ball band says 22 stitches and 30 rows knitted on 4 mm needles should give a square 10cm by 10cm. So does that mean I click on patterns that say 22?

It has a drop shoulder and is from 22-30" chest.

MatNanPlus · 27/10/2008 22:36

I was intrigued DG

florenceuk · 27/10/2008 22:38

or if you look under the yarn Karisma, this is pretty close to a DK weight.

solo · 27/10/2008 22:38

I can email you pics of the pattern if you want and you can enlarge and print them out...Any good DG?

DumbledoresGirl · 27/10/2008 22:38

Solo, I am not sure now. That would just be a stocking stitch plain jumper wouldn't it? OTOH, I have knitted up oggsfrog's second pattern which is a cable pattern and the tension is just right but the cable does not look right with the multi-coloured wool. I think I am going to have to think about this in the morning.

Thanks all.

OP posts:
FiKelly · 27/10/2008 22:38

dumble yes go for it with 22 If you knit to tension it'll be spot on. If you are a tight knitter you may be able to use the 21/20's.

DumbledoresGirl · 27/10/2008 22:39

Wish I could show you the wool and ask your advice on what pattern would be best. You all seem so learned, even MatNanPlus who knows nothing about knitting!

OP posts:
solo · 27/10/2008 22:41

Could you not put a photo of the yarn on your profile pics and let us see it?

DumbledoresGirl · 27/10/2008 22:49

OK doing that, wait 2 minutes.

DumbledoresGirl · 27/10/2008 22:58

Alas no, computer won't resize photo so it can be uploaded. I am off to bed, and will ponder this problem tomorrow, but thanks for all the help offered here.

FiKelly · 27/10/2008 23:01

off to bed also... will keep watching and if I find anything else i'll let you know

oggsfrog · 28/10/2008 07:31

What brand is the yarn you're using Dumble?

DutchOma · 28/10/2008 09:02

If you have a patern in multisizes i.e 18-2--22, but not 24, you can enlarge the pattern yourself. So if it says cast on 58-62-66 sts, then for the larger size you cast on 70 and so on. If you start on this and get stuck we will talk you through it, it's not that difficult. I think I have stuff in the loft I could send you if you like?

DumbledoresGirl · 28/10/2008 09:03

Patons "Fairytale Colour 4 Me DK" is what is written on the label. But when I went to the Patons website and searched for this wool, it did not know it!

My Ravelry invitation arrived today and I have had a look round on that site. I think I might be out of my depth there!
