'pattern' surely?

stitch · 23/10/2008 21:13

you do whatever the pattern is , keepin git correct, till the last four.
you then cast off two, and do whatever the pattern is for the next two.
the next rwo is keeping the pattern correct, do first two stitches, then cast on two stitches, then continue in pattern.

babyjjbaby · 23/10/2008 21:14

sorry don't know why the n didn't work i can't figure out how to cast on and off half way through a row i have only casted on and off at the ends b4

if the "pattern" along the button band is say knit one, purl one, then you do this - if it's all knit then you just knit. it doesn't really matter - as long as it's the same along teh buttonband

stitch · 23/10/2008 21:17

cast off in the normal way
cast on in the normal single thread way.
ravelry may have somevideos. or google it? youtube may also have somve videos showing how to cast on in the normal, single thread way.

babyjjbaby · 23/10/2008 21:17

yes it is half fisher mans rib got the bit fine but just can't figure out how to cast on and off withotu it being at the ned or beginning of row i feel really stupid aswell cos have been knitting for years

OP posts:
tissy · 23/10/2008 21:20

to cast one off, just miss a stitch put needle into next stitch, and with other needle pass the missed stitch over its neighbour

EffiePerine · 23/10/2008 21:20

to cast off

knit two stitched, pass second over the first. Easy to do in the middle of a row

casting on: I hate this as I always use the thumb method which you can't do in the middle of a row! Don;t you knit and then pass the loop on to the needle or summat?

EffiePerine · 23/10/2008 21:22

do you slip stitches when casting off? I always knit 'em. Is this another hting I've been doing wrong for 20-odd years (must ring mother to rant at her for not teaching me properly)

bundle · 23/10/2008 21:22

If you're stuck, take it on to your local wool shop (if you have one) or failing that to a local granny who can show you! It's hard to explain over the net, but if someone shows you it will seem very obvious.

Right, the casting off is easier than the casting on, but not that difficult. For the casting off at the end of a row, work to the last FOUR stitches knit two and haul the first of those two over the next. Then knit another stitch and haul the first one over the second and knit the last stitch.
You then turn your work ready for the next row.
Knit two stitches or maybe you are working in rib, in that case keep the pattern correct.
When you have done those two stitches you turn your work round, then knit between the two stitches and make another stitch. Then do it again. Then turn your work round again and carry on.
Hth

babyjjbaby · 24/10/2008 12:56

That's fine for a small to medium button, but a bigger button won't go through it.
