Thank you for people with more concise english stepping in! I think I hold the thread sort of back left...then the other hand is on the fabric front right, and together they guide the fabric through. Never really thought about it before

carrieon · 11/06/2008 22:35

How are you getting on whoops - have you got rid of that loop yet?
Just gonna get ready for bed and brush my teeth, but I'll be back. I think you're in safe hands with this lot though!

whoopsididitagain · 11/06/2008 22:36

i did all that i have adjusted the tension screws have set the foot and its still not working i will cry in a min

What's not working - have you got to the sewing stage but it won't sew? Oh I wish I was there to help you!!

carrieon · 11/06/2008 22:52

I'm really sorry whoops but its past my bed time...I'll check back tomorrow lunch when dd is having her nap and see how you're getting on.
Maybe you should unthread it all, take a big deep breath, go to bed and try again in the morning. Please don't cry!

whoopsididitagain · 11/06/2008 22:58

OP posts:
carrieon · 12/06/2008 13:02

How's it going??

whoopsididitagain · 12/06/2008 13:07

its not it wont bloody work and i cant work out why think im goona rewind the bobbin see it that helps ????

but from what i can tell i have the right needle the right tension everything in place it just wont stitch

OP posts:
carrieon · 12/06/2008 13:26

That's really odd. Will the needle go up and down, and does the fabric move through under the foot, but there's just no stitches there? Just wondering if the textured plate that moves the fabric through is actually working?

whoopsididitagain · 12/06/2008 13:44

the needle goes up and down the fabric moves thru the machine it just dont bloody sew

I only have one thought left on this. It may not be relevant on an old machine though. In order to thread the bobbin on my machine you have to push a lever to the left. Once you're all threaded and ready to sew you have to push it back to the right in order for it to stitch. Is there anything like that on your machine?

whoopsididitagain · 12/06/2008 17:31

i will have a look and let you know gonna completely start again aftr giving her a good clean and see if that helps ????

Misty your post reminded me that on my mum's machine (which is the same era as whoops's), the spindle on top that you put the bobbin on to wind has to be slid to one side for bobbin winding, and the other side for sewing. I think you might have hit upon it...let us know what happens whoops!

fizzbuzz · 12/06/2008 19:54

If it's not sewing, the thread isn't feeding through.

Is the bobbin falling out if you try and sew?
Are the teeth under the needle plate up or down?
Is the top thread done properly?
Are the tension discs/dial set up properly?
IME it is usually the lower thread which causes problems. You say you have adjusted the screws in the bobbin. I think this could be your problem. They should really only be done by someone who knows a lot about machines. I am loathe to touch them, and have been using machines nearly every day for 12 years

I teach textiles day in/day out. Kids always jamming machines, and it is usually (but not always)lower thread. What type of machine is it?

Do you have same weight of thread on top and bottom?

fizzbuzz · 12/06/2008 19:59

Go back to the bobbin. Does it have a little door on the front, like a lever that you pull out?

If it does, then you need to do this:
Raise needle to highest position.
Open door on bobbin case, and drape thread to left
Insert bobbin case in, making sure you hold the door open all the time.
When it is in properly, yu will hear a click.
Release little lever.
Turn hand wheel down, and slowly pick up thread.

whoopsididitagain · 12/06/2008 21:44

no i havent adjusted the bobbin at all fizz didnt dare

its a jones there is a pic on my profile both are identical brand new thread and bobbin is correctly wound too the teeth face up and move freely

have checked all knobs and levers ec and is wear it should it be

Eeerm.... I give up then. I notice it's got one of those big rubber band things to drive it.
Is that tight enough?

Apart from that don't know, sometimes they just don't want to play and need help from someone who mends them. This may be what it needs...

Did it work when you bought it, or have you bought a pig in a poke?

whoopsididitagain · 13/06/2008 10:43

no it definatley works i'll get the old owner to show e shes at download festival til monday so 'ill grab some point in the week

DutchOma · 13/06/2008 11:26

You need to make sure that the thread from the bobbin is on the top of the housing. So take housing and spool out take the thread from the spool and bring it through the slit so that it sits on top. The close the drawer, lower the needle and pick up the bobbin thread. Bring both threads to the back, put your fabric under, lower the foot and it should work. No point trying until you have twwo threads out on top. There should be a picture in your book to show you how to get the thread from the spool onto the housing

whoopsididitagain · 13/06/2008 16:59

i have done that dutch and its still not sewing im completely befuzzled lol
