For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

Just checked out the Mitchell trousers as I could do with a new pattern and OMG they’d do nothing for me 🤣 I’m so envious.

I got some gorgeous non stretch denim in my PAM denim bundle and all my jeans patterns are for stretch denim. I don’t really want to go through the faff of fitting for something like the Megan Neilsson ones so I’m pondering adapting the LN allegros into a looser fit jeans style trousers. Anything seems to go nowadays in jeans fit and I think I could get close to boyfriend fit. It’s fired my imagination as a project anyway.

kittykarate · 08/01/2026 10:24

I made Made by Rae Rose up in denim chambray and they looked really good. But I think they wouldn't work for anything heavyweight. The last time I had some non-stretch denim from PAM I made a jacket, so I could truly go denim tuxedo.

Jins · 08/01/2026 10:31

I’ve got my allegros on inside out right now and I think there’s capacity to make them much closer fitting through the legs and hips. I’m lucky with my waist as it’s the same as my hip measurement so there shouldn’t be too much bunching up at the waist. I’d probably do a yoga waistband anyway which would help. I’m definitely going to give it a go with some old curtains first though.

twobluechickens · 08/01/2026 16:25

The Mitchells work for me whereas other front-pleated trousers would emphasise my pear shape. I’m making the wide leg version but am also lucky to have long legs so am balanced out. I normally wear a straight or slim leg in jeans though.

OMG. My Knighton fabrics mystery box just arrived. £14!!!!

Most pieces are 2m, a couple are 4 and only 2 are around 1m. Only 3 that look a bit challenging and the rest are straight into stash and I’m good for fabric this year 😀

I've just googled 'Knighton fabrics mystery box' and I can hardly believe that it's all stretch fabrics😲
I HAVE to get one😍
Thank you for alerting me to this wondrous thing 😁

Jins · 13/01/2026 12:33

There’s a fair bit of Lycra included @MO0N but it’s the soft drapey type. I’m especially excited by the black leather look on the top of the pile. Less excited by the neon green tiger stripe stretch velvet but you never know

MO0N · 13/01/2026 12:52

Thanks for the info @Jins even if some of the fabric ends up being used for prototypes/toiles etc it's one hell of a bargain!
And surely having a big selection for to choose from will be inspirational.
Or maybe I'll be paralyzed by indecision? Time will tell, I've just ordered my mystery box 🤩

OnlyTheBravest · 13/01/2026 12:54

That mystery box is such a steal @Jins

Not sure of your style or if you have any young adults but that the tiger stripe material would make fab beachwear. I am thinking something like a boob tube top with a matching scarf/bag/scrunchie.

OnlyTheBravest · 13/01/2026 12:56

I would buy a box but I have put myself on a fabric ban until I have used up some of my stash. LMAO

That hasn't stopped me just ordering a ton of patterns. I really fancy working on statement sleeves this year.

Jins · 13/01/2026 13:09

Years ago I’d have been all over that neon green stretch velvet @OnlyTheBravest but sadly I’m older and saggier now and less inclined to draw attention to myself. I do have young adults but both DSs and they wouldn’t thank me.

I need to measure it properly as I definitely know someone who could use it

Looks brilliant! I’m just waiting for mine, should be here very soon and the other end of year bargains I ordered. A whole year of lovely stash admiring 😊

Castlerigg · 13/01/2026 17:04

Hi all, I’ve been lurking but I haven’t sewn anything in ages. Since I made those summer trousers that were so unflattering, I couldn’t bring myself to attempt anything else for a while. I’ve also been reluctant because I’ve gained weight with peri and I’m trying to lose it. I don’t want to make bigger sizes and then have unwearable clothes that I’ve worked hard on, and used up expensive fabric that I really like. The result is that I just haven’t been sewing. I’ve joined the low carb bootcamp thread, and hopefully as we start to get towards spring I might feel renewed enthusiasm.

Brefugee · 13/01/2026 18:15

ohhh @Castlerigg i feel you. I really don't have the urge to sew anything in my new shape either.
It is what it is, i suppose

Castlerigg · 13/01/2026 20:18

@Brefugee I’d like to make some loose-ish stretchy tops, the type of thing that might span a couple of clothes sizes. I think if I got a couple of successful tops done, it would help me get some confidence back.

That would work wouldn't it, and a top that fits closely now could also work as an outer layer later on when you go down a size or two.
I've made a few tunic style tops recently, I like them loose and flared and can never find the style that I like in shops

Jins · 14/01/2026 06:28

I feel the pain @Castlerigg and @Brefugee. I’ve lost a few inches now but my main problem when I was making clothes for the bigger me was all the looking in the mirror stuff that’s involved with dressmaking.

I’m still on a learning curve with stretch fabrics it appears as I’ve just made two LN classic tees back to back in the same size but with different necklines. One fits really well and the other has those pull lines that say I should have done an FBA. i measured the stretch percentages and they were virtually the same. It was only a toile to get a v neckband ticked off (nailed it) and will end up as pjs as the fabric is baby pink and a bit too see through.

No news from the sewing machine spa but he’s been away and was expecting to have another look at it on Monday or Tuesday so I’m hoping for an update today.

Castlerigg · 14/01/2026 06:47

Well done on your neckband and your inches lost @Jins.

I may have ordered that mystery box of fabric mentioned upthread… If nothing else, I need to sew again to get this stash down a bit!

Jins · 14/01/2026 07:28

I’m more pleased about the v neck! It’s taken years and this is the first one I’ve ever done that hasn’t had a pleat at the v.

Excuse the topstitching, when I realised that it was destined to be pjs I took far less care

that is it @Jins i just can't stand the constant constant reminders that i have put on a lot of inches.

Basically i need to get over myself.

So back to patchwork cushion covers and other things like that for me!!

Edited to take out all the winging self pity. Excellent V-neck, @Jins

Castlerigg · 14/01/2026 10:42

@BrefugeeYou don’t sound vain at all, it’s ok not to like the bodily changes that we’re subject to.

I know I’ve been very fortunate in the past to not have to worry about my weight / size etc, but now peri is here, and I seem to be clinging onto every pound. My belly is so round, it’s awful, and the current wider-leg trouser styles make me look squat and dumpy.

I’ve been browsing my “planned projects” list, and have everything put aside for a baker boy hat, so I’m going to make that next. Hopefully I haven’t put on weight on my head!

Brefugee · 14/01/2026 13:14

thanks @Castlerigg - going through a few other things right now that are bringing me down. But should't use this lovely group as a dumping ground!

ohhh am intersted in the Baker boy hat, i remember they did one on Sewing Bee a few years ago but i didn't look at how they made the peak.

Assuming it is lined, also?

Castlerigg · 14/01/2026 13:22

It is indeed lined. I’m taking it to my sewing group on Sunday. I might cut it out beforehand though, if I get chance. I’ve got some extra-stiff interfacing for the peak, as I would like it to retain a bit of flexibility. If it goes well I’ll show pics - if it doesn’t I’ll deny all knowledge. (What hat? You’re crazy.)

Jins · 14/01/2026 15:14

A clever man has fixed my husqvarna. I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to getting it back

twobluechickens · 14/01/2026 20:56

Ooh great news. How exciting!
