For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

That sounds pretty much like how I do it, only I start from the edge and sew towards the zip. I’ll have to make another and video it while I’m doing it so you can see what I mean 😂 I’m also going to try it your way round.

blimey, i am such an eejit, i literally sew: 1st part from edge to zip, 2nd part from zip to edge
Edge to zip every time would be so much easier

@PickAChew its the 105 Classica. I’ve found a manual online but it’s not much help

Do you have the service manual? That should help you get into it and shows yoh what to check for.

I still can’t get the front off as a lever that should be there isn’t. So I’ve used an age old bodging technique. It really needs to come apart as the switch selector doesn’t work either. Suspect it’s filthy.

I really need to get this working. It has just sewn through 10 layers of medium weight denim as if they were cotton lawn. That’s nearly a cm of fabric. This is a beast!

😮 10 layers! I need one for making jeans! My current machine is pretty good but it really struggles with doing bar tacks on jeans belt loops.

Jins · 14/12/2025 09:09

I couldn’t believe my eyes @twobluechickens. I just kept adding more folded denim until I couldn’t squeeze any more under the presser foot. I’m putting it away until after Xmas now as I haven’t got time to faff around with it but it’s a new year project. It’s inspired me to try to finally fix my 60s singer as I bought the bits years ago. Might dig that out today as it should be a quick fix.

Jins · 14/12/2025 14:11

I’ve fixed the singer!!!! Took ages to get the foot pedal apart and the rubber feet are now in the bin but when I got into it it was easy. Didn’t even need the capacitor I’d bought in readiness. I found a YouTube video which said they weren’t needed so I tried without and it worked perfectly. I’ve filled it with oil and did the denim test. Also 10 layers but not as well as the husqvana did. So if anyone is after a beast of a machine the Singer 99k is worth a punt if one turns up.

Was going to start on something festive for me but cba so I’ve put that off until tomorrow and now I’m knitting

twobluechickens · 14/12/2025 17:02

Nice one, well done!

Isabelle70 · 14/12/2025 20:54

The crackers have been completed and I am really pleased with how they turned out. I only need 4 but will make an extra 2 as having a set of 6 will be more useful in the future.

they're stunning. Fabulous fabrics

PickAChew · 14/12/2025 21:13

They are beautiful!

OnlyTheBravest · 14/12/2025 21:37

@Isabelle70 Those are stunning. Definitely worth the effort.

twobluechickens · 15/12/2025 07:48

They look great! I haven’t thought about crackers this year. Too late to make any now but perhaps for next year.

Jins · 15/12/2025 08:34

Oh wow! Those crackers are beautiful 😍

Has anyone got any tips for making huge bows out of fabric? Someone left a roll of sparkly red voile (I think) on my step last night. It sounds weird but it happens quite often. Everyone knows I sew and if they come across fabric they think is too good to throw away they abandon it on my step for me to take it in. Like a Victorian orphan outside a workhouse only with craft stuff. Usually I send it for ragging as my quilting friend has a contact but I quite fancy a big sparkly bow or four on the garlands this year.

Jins · 15/12/2025 16:20

Someone was after a pattern for a bow top. Simply sewing has one this month if it’s any good.

There’s also a dress pattern that’s right up my street and a crescent bag a la Uniqlo so it’s quite a good month. Haven’t checked the downloadable ones yet

Isabelle70 · 15/12/2025 18:01

@jinsthank you 🤩
I have made a big bow for a wreath, an oblong that I filled with bubble wrap and the tails about double the length of the bow width. All joined together with cable ties. The tails should have been wider, as they are too skinny.
I also have some more red fabric left over so going to make a couple of big tree bows and thinking of using some boning to keep the outer bow shape and not be floppy.

Thank you. I’ll try to grab a copy as the bag sounds good too.

Jins · 16/12/2025 08:28

Thanks @Isabelle70 I’ve had a go with my glittery red stuff before I saw your post and it’s very gauzy and light so stuffing wouldn’t work. It did make a fabulously scruffy bow which then flopped badly when I held it up so I sprayed it liberally with spray starch last night and will see what it looks like today.

I’ve washed a piece of mystery viscose in suitably festive shades ready for some Xmas inspiration to strike. There’s 2.5m but it’s a narrow width which is a difficult amount. More than enough for a top, probably enough for a dress but there’s a very obvious pattern which is a bit limiting. May go down the shift dress route or see if I can squeeze a shorter version of W&W kinjarling out of it. It’s actually crying out to be a pair of palazzo pants but I’m determined to make something that I’ll actually wear

Jins · 16/12/2025 09:47

Spray starch worked! I’ve got a nice rigid messy bow.

Any suggestions for the fabric in the other picture gratefully received

Phew , I’ve just about finished the Claudia cubic bag- just a little hand stitching to do tomorrow in good light .
I am quite chuffed with it , and will certainly make more - but I will use a better quality zip , and maybe a stiffer fusible/ interfacing ( or more stiff outer material )
Now the machine gets a little rest over Christmas

How about heat proof coasters , or table mats ? Maybe a table runner if its long enough

Jins · 20/12/2025 07:20

@bookbook that cubic bag is so much better than mine! Looks great. I should have said that the fabric in the photo was viscose but your suggestions have been useful as they’ve confirmed my thinking that I may end up looking like I’m wearing curtains. Back in the stash till summer for that one.

I’m out of time for sewing. I had a couple of things I wanted to make but putting my house back together after disruptive DIY will take too long to allow sewing time.

When I’m back to my machine the first priority will be some pull on trousers in some scuba I bought years ago and haven’t touched. I’m not the biggest fan of scuba but it is warm! I’ll be using the 5oo4 candy yoga pants as a base but will try to draft a wrap waistband and make them slightly more fitted in the thigh. I’ve just cleared my wardrobe of most of my old work jackets but need something smarter than a cardigan so I’ll be tackling a jacket in the new year.

EricTheHalfASleeve · 21/12/2025 08:04

As my user name implies, I have a sleeve problem. Kid's waterproof coat failed spectacularly and has a massive horizontal rip through waterproof top layer - in a circle around 2/3 of the arm. Not a fabric I could sew and I suspect it would melt if I tried to put an iron on patch over it.

Is there any way of salvaging it or is it for the bin?

Seems a waste to bin it (kid has another jacket so not going cold, I just don't like throwing clothes out). No point in trying to salvage fabric from it, small child's size and all plasticy waterproof stuff I wouldn't use.
